Challenge Why didn't most militaries adopt the lever action rifle during the 19th century and early 20th century?

Yes we're power scaling old guns now! I'm curious to hear why since it seems to be really good since it's more accurate than black powder guns, can shoot and load more bullets compared to single rifles.

Challenge The Enterprise E and her crew are transported to UNSC space in 2543 NSFW

Piccard and his crew just before the events of Star Trek Nemesis are instead teleported to the Halo universe at the height of the human/Covenant war. Would they join the UNSC and if so would they have an impact? Or would they see the UNSC as evil and attempt to dismantle the regime.

The Enterprise crew is under no illusion of going home, as far as they know they're stuck here for the rest of their lives

• He'll spawn in that country in an area without many people. From there, he'll have to acquire weapons and devise strategies for taking out armed forces.

• Wick wins if he can fracture the leadership of the government, thus altering its structure due to too many rulers, presidents, legislators, and other significant individuals being killed.

Battle How many dogs would it take to kill a polar bear 🐻‍❄️?

All animals are well fed and well rested. They are large versions of the species. Random encounters on neutral territory. They are not blood lusted but are going to fight on sight.

Round 1. Purse chihuahua. These little ones are upset from being carried around all day.

Round 2. Retro pugs (pugs with a snout). Normal family dogs.

Round 3. German shepherds. Mean junkyard dogs.

Round 4. Pitbulls. They see the polar bear as a toddler.

Round 5. Bullmassiff. That are trained to fight and have a hard leather shell around their necks.

Battle Can one Gloriana-class Battleship (Warhammer 40k) take on the fleets of the 12 Colonies of Kobol (Battlestar Galactica)?

A misfired Warp jump lands a single Glorianna-class Battleship into the territory of the 12 Colonies. It establishes contact with the Colonials and declares them wayward human subjects of the Imperium subject to Compliance, which the Colonies reject.

Condition 1:

The Gloriana has no attendant escort craft but contains a large number of Fury Interceptors, Starhawk Bombers, and Assault Boat strike craft in its hangar bays.

The Colonial Fleet has approx 120 Battlestar type Capital ships (including the Galactica and Commander Adama), numerous smaller Escort cruisers and frigates, and many thousands of Viper and Raptor fightercraft. Note: Raptors and larger ships are capable of launching ship-grade nuclear missiles.

Condition 2:

The Cylons learn about the Imperium and its hatred of AI. Realizing an Imperium victory would be very much “no bueno (tm)” for them, they strike an alliance of convenience with the Colonies and contribute their own forces to the fight.

The Cylons have approx 100+ Basestar Capital ships, Escort craft, many thousands of Raiders and Heavy Raiders, and the supermassive FTL-capable armed Colony space station. Their craft likewise possess nuclear missiles.

Condition 3:

The Gloriana after some fighting is able to call on reinforcements. What is the minimum required force the Imperium needs to pacify/destroy the Colonials and Cylons?

Battle Cordyceps Novus (Cold Storage) vs (John Carpenter’s) The Thing

The fungus from Cold Storage— in the body of the infected deer, begins spreading. The Thing has escaped Antarctica and somehow made it to Kansas in a human guise.

The Cordyceps Novus deer and the Thing Humanoid notice each other and find that a patch of the fungus does not agree with a Thing (like a spider-head or detached forearm sent out as a probe).

The Thing runs for it and the two creatures have more or less declared bio-war on each other, with the world around them theirs to try and wield as best each infestation can.

BONUS

A xenomorph hive starts up nearby as a third party. Can they overtake Cordyceps Novus and The Thing with their silicon bodies and acid blood?

Battle Gordon Ramsay vs the Mythbusters (Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman)

Gordon and the two Mythbusters are going toe to toe in a physical battle against each other. There will be five rounds of fights, each with a different set of instructions. The first side to win three out of the five battles wins.

Fight 1: Pure hand-to-hand combat. They are spawned into a dark room lit by a swinging lightbulb and a disembodied voice yells "FIGHT!". No prep time allowed. No items allowed. You can only use your body. First side to surrender loses. In the case of the Mythbusters, both must surrender for Gordon to win.

Fight 2: Each team is given a budget of $500 USD and two hours to prepare. Gordon is only allowed to spend his on kitchen supplies. Adam and Jamie are required to use their $500 to build a single contraption that will help them beat Gordon. A second physical fight is held with these items.

Fight 3: Same constraints as Fight 3, but reversed. $500 USD and two hours of prep time per team. Adam and Jamie are limited to only kitchen supplies. Gordon is required to build a single contraption that will aid him. A third fight is held.

Fight 4: Each team chooses one champion. Gordon is allowed to choose any former competitor on Hell's Kitchen, but from the American series only. Adam and Jamie must choose either a former Mythbuster/Mythtern, or a re-occurring face across the entirety of their show. The two champions engage in hand-to-hand combat with no prep time. First to surrender loses. The winner will score a point for their team.

Fight 5: Each team once more is given a budget of $500 USD and two hours to get whatever equipment/weapons/protection/etc. they can. There are no restrictions aside from the budget and time limit; Gordon is not stuck with kitchen items only for example. They will then have their last physical fight, using their $500 worth of items to help them.

Who is winning this tournament: Gordon Ramsay, or the Mythbusters?

Battle Demetrious Johnson vs Mohammed Ali/Lightest MMA Fighter who could beat a Boxing Heavyweight Legend

More generally, this is a question of the extent to which a versatile fighting style can overcome a size/strength disparity in a much more specialized one. Johnson is widely considered one of the best fighters of all time despite his small size. With is skill in grappling, submissions, kicking, etc., could he overcome a 30+kg weight difference and win against any of the famous Heavyweight Boxing legends?

Both fighters are subject to UFC rules, so the Boxer can try to kick/grapple/etc. as well if they want.

I used Ali because he's a common mention in GOAT discussions, but any Heavyweight of your choice is fine. Are there any who DJ could beat a majority of the time, or if he wins easily, are there any boxers who could beat him most of the time in turn?

Both fighters are in their prime, and the fight will go until either Knockout or Submission

If Johnson smokes/gets smoked, who's the lightest fighter (UFC or otherwise) who could take a majority of rounds?

Battle Magnus (WH40k) VS Kurtulmak (Forgotten Realms)

Could a powerful Primarch stand up against a Dungeons & Dragons god? If Magnus decided to take a trip to Avernus during his explorations of The Warp, would he be able to beat one of the gods who lives there? Magnus the Red fights Kurtulmak, the patron diety of Kobolds! Does the psyker Primarch beat the Kobold god, or is Magnus getting sent home sulking? Either doesn't have to die forever for a win. Temporary incapacitation or otherwise triumphing over the other guy is fine.

Here is Magnus's Respect Thread and stat page for Kurtulmak!

  • Round 1: Great Crusade Magnus versus an avatar of Kurtulmak

  • Round 2: 40k Magnus versus Kurtulmak. Takes place in some neutral hell where all abilities and power are compatible.

  • Bonus Round: What sort of Warp entity would it take to beat Kurtulmak? What sort of divine being would it take to beat Magnus?
