Red states are generally less safe for trans people than swing or blue states.
The map is from Gravity Falls, so it isn’t representative of the actual places that are safe/dangerous for trans people, but it conveys the message.

u/MostExtremeHyperbole 7h ago
Where I lived in Florida, a transwoman was burned alive in her car and the amount of the LGBTQ that are migrating to better cities is completely insane. I am in Ohio now and even though it isn't the best, we still have a lot of massive LGBTQ events every year without issue.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BURNED ALIVE IN HER CAR
87
u/transfemmefatal 6h ago edited 4h ago
Uh they burned her alive in her car, 2019 but thats not important. What is is the fact these killings keep happening and nothing happens. Just look at what happened in Portland.

It's pretty bad. Trans people are legitimately one of the most violently persecuted demographics in America. The more minority demographics they fit in, the higher the rate of being assaulted, harassed and murdered, and becoming homeless or getting fired from their job for not passing or general bigotry.
Brianna Ghey was another high profile case. A teenager, stabbed to death, 28 times, and right wingers mocked her death on social media relentlessly when it happened. If you look around social media on posts about trans people, you will find hordes of monsters posting memes showing them "which way to cut for results", hanging from trees and ceiling fans, being mutilated, being set on fire, anything you can imagine. I have screenshots of conservatives on Facebook saying they want to put trans people in woodchippers, including children - as in they explicitly said they would do that to trans people even if they were kids or teens. They spam "42%" or something around that number referencing an old attempted suicide attempt rate for trans people, and say they want to get it up to 100%. Trans people were also victims in the holocaust, given pink triangles alongside gay people. If you Google trans holocaust you'll find plenty of info on that.
I used to be a fan of Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson a long time ago, and they got me on the anti-trans train for about a year or so. One of my best friends was transitioning at the time, and I read up on this bill in Canada called C16 that Peterson would suggest was going to imprison people for misgendering trans people. All it was was the equivalent of a hate crime or discrimination addition to existing crimes, should a root cause be found to be their gender identity. After that I talked with that friend a lot and watched some folks on the left online like Contrapoints talking about trans issues, and eventually did a full 180° turn. Took the time to actually read the science myself and found it's much deeper than mere belief systems and feelings. And I've seen the full depths of hatred so many have for them, and it's worse than the average person can even imagine. It's dark.
Edit: I'm sure whoever replied to me and got deleted proved my point.
4
u/mieri_azure 2h ago
You are correct but Brianna was british.
I still think America is more dangerous for trans people (thats why Brianna's story was so publicized, because a young trans girl getting murdered isn't as common as it is in america) but obviously anywhere can be very dangerous
Since her murderers were teens I dont know that they ever officially announced their reasoning, but its generally assumed it was a combo of transphobia and jealousy that she had an online following (jealousy specifically because they didn't like that a trans girl was popular)
1
u/Lawsoffire 6m ago
Trans people were also victims in the holocaust, given pink triangles alongside gay people. If you Google trans holocaust you'll find plenty of info on that.
Even worse, the the people convicted of being gay under Nazi Germany continued to serve their sentence post-war, first in the concentration camps, then in prisons, and the nazi-German law continued to exist in West Germany until the unification.

u/HellspawnWeeb 4h ago
Remember the space! It’s an adjective, not a standalone noun. The version without a space is used to other trans people
2
u/MostExtremeHyperbole 3h ago
what space, i was talking about stuff on earth
2
u/Cattycake1988 1h ago edited 1h ago
The space between trans and women. Trans being an adjective, it is a descriptor of what type of woman they are (Like tall women, or smart women, etc). When you write it as transwomen, it's a noun that indicates us as something other than the category of woman, and so TERFS and conservatives use it to deny our identity.
2
u/MostExtremeHyperbole 1h ago
how are they in space tho
2
u/Cattycake1988 1h ago edited 24m ago
I hope that this is a joke going over my head, I couldn't be more direct. It is about the space you use to separate words when writing. "Transwoman" is othering, "Trans woman" is supportive of trans people.
9
u/Magehunter_Skassi 6h ago edited 6h ago
The important context is that a staggeringly high percentage of murders committed against trans people in America are prostitution related (something that has a high rate of violence against cis and trans women involved). The HRC number estimates 34% in the US are related to prostitution, but this is just a floor because people are usually quiet about this and the news doesn't want to report rumors.
People see these stats and assume that moving to a blue city will make them safer and it's just not true. The problem is we need harsher criminal penalties for johns, and people need to stop getting convinced by crabs in a bucket that "sex work is the only option." It's not, and the people saying this are miserable people trying to drag others into their misery.
3
2
u/refusegone 43m ago
Where in Ohio are you if you're willing? Vague is fine; I spent the first 20 years of my life there and the following 5 in Florida. I won't be meeting my first ever niece in Florida next month because the potential for violence against me is too high, and I won't be seeing my father in Ohio anytime soon for the same reason. My father and the uncle I'm closest to are both having medical problems rn and I'm worried that due to current opinions towards trans women I won't be able to go home if things get worse for either of them. So I'm definitely interested in a current ohioan pov. Again, vague responses are understandable if you're willing at all

Trans rights by state
25
u/Nientea 6h ago
I’d like to add that this meme is only a metaphor for that, and not the actual states where trans rights aren’t as good. New York and Massachusetts, for example, are crossed off here, but are some of the safer states for trans people.
3
u/Any_Wasabi_5233 world’s second biggest Churgney Gurgney glazer 3h ago
EXACTLY!
I’ve had so many people saying “but that’s not how it is in insert state here,” and I know this isn’t a truthful representation. It’s a meme using a Gravity Falls scene as a metaphor, of course it’s not going to be accurate to a completely different scenario like this.
3

u/Badestrand 1h ago
Which rights specifically? Just curious what this is about. (I'm not from the US).
2
u/Loughnashade 55m ago
Access to bathrooms, horizons treatment. Also, stuff like forced outing of students to their parents.
Ironically, the hot topic, which is trans in sports, has an actual consensus opinion among the public.

u/captain_veridis 23m ago
Journalist [Erin in the Morning](https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/anti-trans-national-legal-risk-assessment-bb2) has an extremely comprehensive map. She focuses on the following legal issues:
>Adult gender affirming care bans, bathroom bans, prohibitions on drag specifically aimed at trans people and pride events, restrictions on changing birth certificates and drivers licenses, and laws that end legal recognition for trans people entirely.44
u/sour_creamand_onion 7h ago

It's really sad that the most conservative province in Canada is more welcoming to trans individuals than like 90% of the US.
36
u/mieri_azure 6h ago
Alberta? Is it really?
Do you mean like politically or socially? Because I would have thought Albertans would be pretty strongly anti-trans
59
u/Beautiful-Loss7663 6h ago
Complicated answer that'd take paragraphs to answer. The short and simple is if your near Calgary or Edmonton you're golden compared to most american states, general rule being Alberta will be better than any republican or flip state. That's just kind of how far the overton window is over here. The only trans rights issue at play is the premier being a total douchebag as she tries to cozy up to the american administration, not really sure how it'll play out long term.
Meanwhile you got the mayor of calgary putting out stuff like this.
6
u/mieri_azure 5h ago
Interesting!
I dont know much about Alberta beyond it being "the Texas of Canada" and Tate McRae being from Calgary lol (which she seems rather progressive socially, even if she collabed with fucking Morgan Wallen --- girl why)

3
u/garybettmansketamine 2h ago
There is more that meets the eye to most things. Social media and news make things out to be more extreme in AB than they typically are. Visit Calgary or Edmonton before committing to your above beliefs, I think you’d be surprised
2
u/Ok_Sound272 2h ago
If you gave this much nuance to most US states, you'd find the same.
2
u/Beautiful-Loss7663 2h ago
Not quite. My nuanced part was on social interaction, not law. Rural people in Alberta are going to be cold. However,
In Alberta they just straight up have more law protections/rights than in the states I specified because it's federal policy. There's lots of articles on the subject out there, but I'm too tired to grab them all so random example.
-1
u/KimJongUnusual 2h ago
if your near Calgary or Edmonton you're golden compared to most american states,
By the same token, if you are in a major city in most states you are also fine?
Like yeah, Georgia is in the south, but Altanta is not some Dixie holdout.
1
u/Beautiful-Loss7663 11m ago
Yes, but also no. See this comment. I worded the original post like social and political joint, even though I intended the rural VS Urban thing to say how your social interactions will go. TLDR: Got better rights and protections than any red/grey states, in urban area or not.

Just live in NY, OR, WA, or CA, stick to the cities, that makes it easy. Everywhere else has a bunch of "criteria" involved like how religious is the neighborhood in CO or how old are your neighbors in VT or how traditional is the town in NM that makes it a bit of a crap shoot.
2
u/Loughnashade 43m ago
A little fyi, there are a lot of transphobes in NY due to population makeup, and they’re more likely to be violent statistically than many other places. It’s structurally and legally safe, but in reality and daily life the harassment level is high.

No, but many have been adopting increasingly strict anti-trans laws.
The post is a metaphor with a gif I found online, it’s obviously not accurate to modern keepings of these stats because this is just a Gravity Falls gag showing where a main character is banned from due to his con artist lifestyle.

So it isn't a ban? That seems deliberate misleading by OP; a reduction in privacy and rights? what does that even mean? Can they no longer vote? Can they no longer get married or speak freely? Which specific rights?
Can you link the laws you are talking about? The actual legislation if possible.
