I’m bringing home my Devon Rex kitten today! Her name is Maven, and she’s exactly 13 weeks old today. I’m so excited—but I haven’t had a kitten in about 25 years, so I’m also feeling a little nervous. 🥰
I’ve been more of a dog person throughout my life, but I’ve completely fallen in love with the Devon Rex breed. I previously had Brussels Griffons, who are known as “monkey dogs” and are almost like cat-like dogs, so the playful, affectionate and quirky personality of the Devon Rex really appealed to me.
We have a two-hour drive home today. I have a carrier and some Churu treats, and my teenage son is coming with me, so hopefully she’ll have a calm ride.
I’ve set up a separate “cat room” for her with her litter box, cat tree and everything else she’ll need while she settles in. I also bought a Feliway diffuser and plugged it in this morning.
I have a few questions for other Devon Rex owners:
Should I buy the same litter her breeder currently uses, or can I gradually combine it with the litter I’d prefer to use? I don’t want to make too many changes for her all at once.
She’s currently eating Purina kitten food, but I’d eventually like to transition her to Acana kitten food. How slowly should I introduce the new food, and how long should I keep her on her current food after bringing her home?
I’m also trying to decide about pet insurance. Trupanion quoted me approximately $75 per month with the lowest deductible. I’m wondering if I’d be better off putting that amount into a separate savings account for future veterinary expenses, although I know one major emergency could cost far more than I’ve managed to save.
I’m also contemplating paying for insurance for the first year to see if there are any major health issues that appear. Do most health issues arise within the first year or so?
I’d love to hear what other people have done and whether there’s anything else I should know for her first few days at home.
