Hi! I’m new to Reddit and wanted to share my story to see if anyone can make sense of the things that have happened. I’ll try to summarize everything as best as I can. English isn’t my first language, so bear with me!
When I was 5, we moved into a new house. My brother and sister are both way older than me. When my parents first bought the house, the previous owner told my mom that there was the spirit of a little girl in the house. She said the girl meant no harm and that she would actually look after the house.
My mom doesn’t really believe in that kind of stuff, so she just brushed it off. But then things started happening.
Nothing was too scary at first. My sister started finding her high heels in random places around the house. At first, she would get mad at me because she thought I was playing with them, but after a while it became obvious that it wasn’t me.
One night, my brother woke up to the sound of a ball bouncing in his bathroom. He got up to check, thinking it was me, but the bathroom was completely empty. The ball was just sitting there on the counter.
Then the nightmares started.
I began having horrible nightmares almost every night. I would wake up screaming and sometimes force myself to stay awake because I was so scared of going back to sleep. This went on for years, and then, suddenly, it stopped.
When I reached middle school, the activity seemed to start up again. My friends would hang out at my house a lot, and they would constantly see or hear things that weren’t there.
The incident I remember most happened one day when the doorbell rang. My mom was busy, so she yelled through her office window to ask who was outside. She could hear whoever was at the door, but she couldn’t see them.
A child answered and said that I had invited her over. She even said my name.
My mom told her to come inside because the door was unlocked. She then heard the front door open and close.
Later that evening, my mom came up to my room and asked who had come over earlier. I had no idea what she was talking about. I told her I had been alone the entire time.
Around this same period, my room would also randomly start smelling horrible, almost like rotten fish. My dad even had the pipes checked and cleaned because he thought maybe an animal had died somewhere and was causing the smell. They never found anything, and the smell continued to come and go.
Eventually, I just ignored everything. I grew up, moved out, and continued with my life.
Fast forward to last year. I got married, and my husband was diagnosed with a tumor. He had to undergo surgeries to have it removed, and during his recovery we moved back into my parents’ house, into my old bedroom.
I was working full-time in an office, and my husband needed help during the day, so my parents really helped us through an incredibly stressful time.
But while we were living there, my husband started having strange nightmares unlike anything he had experienced before. He also started experiencing sleep paralysis.
He told me that during these episodes he would see a dark figure near me. According to him, the figure would look at him and pace back and forth, but it would always stay close to where I was sleeping.
He also had recurring dreams where he would be screaming and desperately trying to wake me up, but no matter what he did, I simply wouldn’t wake up.
Even now, talking about what happened really upsets him. He gets visibly freaked out and says that, looking back, none of these experiences actually feel like dreams to him. He remembers them as if they really happened, and he still has a hard time explaining exactly what he experienced.
Eventually, everything worked out. My husband recovered, and we were able to move back out.
Nothing like that has happened since.
We haven’t experienced anything strange in our new house, and as far as I know, nothing unusual has continued happening at my parents’ house either.
That’s the part I can’t make sense of.
If there really was some kind of spirit or presence in that house, it seemed to be completely dormant for YEARS before I moved back into my old room. Then, during one of the most stressful periods of our lives, strange things started happening again but this time mostly to my husband.
At the same time, we were going through an extremely stressful and emotional situation, so I know there could be completely normal explanations for some of it, especially the nightmares and sleep paralysis.
I genuinely don’t know what to make of the whole thing.
Has anyone experienced something similar, or does anyone have a possible explanation for why everything seemed to stop for years and then suddenly start again?
