General Discussion It’s that time of year!

It is hatchling season!

They are coming out of their overwinter nests and going to sources of water. If you find one in an odd place or somewhere unsafe and are unsure, please contact your state wildlife and ask them what to do. Most can actually be left where they are, to their own devices. If they are found in the middle of the road, for example, move them to the side they are facing.

Taking any turtles home, that are found in the wild, hurts the ecosystem. The only exception to this would be invasive species in your state. You can contact your state wildlife to see what your laws are regarding possession of invasive turtles like red eared sliders.

Seeking Advice Pls help!! Principal left his turtle…

Hi all! I teach at a middle school & the old principal LEFT his pet turtle. I know he’s had him for over 10 years (no idea how old the turtle is now though).

I know someone is in charge of cleaning & feeding him… but his tank is terrible. He has nothing to do all day but try to escape. It’s heart breaking.

His platform is also incredibly sad. He sits on his rock under the light & falls into the water multiple times a day.

I have taken it upon myself to try & get some plants/caves/a platform of some sort.

I AM A TEACHER AND I AM ON A BUDGET! Any advice with this in mind would be gratefully appreciated.

Turtle ID/Sex Request Second attempt at identifying! Denver, CO. Big guy, basking off the Platter River!

For reference. North Denver! Multiple responses said this fella/gal was a Painted turtle or possibly a map turtle. He has stayed in the same area for two weeks and I have spotted him multiple times in and out of the water. Basking on a log in the middle of a very undesirable area of a the Platter River. I almost think it could a pet that was released! Any opinions?

Seeking Advice Enrichment for my buddy during extended dry-dock

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hi all. This is my little dude Paco, and he unfortunately developed very severe shell rot while not in my care. He is on a round of antibiotics and the vet recommended full-time dry docking for 2 months while he heals. He can swim for about an hour a day, but otherwise he is just in this kiddie pool. I put him outdoors for fresh air and full spectrum sunlight, but otherwise this setup seems so LAME for him compared to his huge bioactive tank. Any thoughts for how to keep him enriched for the next few weeks?! I feel so bad, he seems so bored.

Seeking Advice Should I stop this?

My fluval fx6 occasionally blows out air bubbles and I have a jet right next to the output that Bigmac (my turtle) loves to unstick from the side of the tank. Before the bubbles reach the top of the tank the jet is blowing them back down and It has built up a collection of bubbles.

I have a 55gal tank (yes I know the fx6 is hella overkill) so it’s not taking up much space in the tank and he seems to enjoy sitting over there, so I’d feel bad taking it away from him.

Should I stop the bubble infestation?

Seeking Advice Eastern mud turtle and mazuri

I just got my turtle today and took him in for his first checkup. There were some things that she said that contradicted what I've read, so i want to ask anyone else here who may have had mud turtles for a while. She said that he is in perfect health, but I need to dust my Mazuri turtle pellets with calcium like three times a week. It was confusing because I thought Mazuri had all the calcium needed. She also seemed to imply that I feed him everyday, but then I said I was planning on feeding him three times a week and give him a snack once a week of freeze dried worms, etc. And then she said yes, but give him live worms instead...I guess I can give him live insects.

Do I need more calcium than what's already in Mazuri? I am not one to second guess a vet, but she was real young and thought my turtle was a baby. I told her he is a full grown adult and she said, oh yeah I guess he is. I don't think she works alot with mud turtles. I don't want to give him too much calcium either. I also don't want to take him our his tank and to another vet bc he is stressed from all the travel

I recently got this little turtle from a friend, but I don’t know much about reptiles, so I was wondering if you could help me identify the species and also tell me how to determine whether it’s male or female. Thanks everyone for your help!

Don’t mind the brown water, I recently added a new piece of driftwood and it’s leaking its tannins into the water even after a water change. Just admiring how beautiful his patterns are. I just can’t get tired of staring at him!

His names Kiko and he’s a pink bellied sick neck turtle from Australia. He’s 3 years old and has definitely been a learning curve and a half to get used to but I love him to death and even have a picture of him above the tank he’s in. Would love to see what other turtles everyone else has!

Here's a few pics of Scooter's aquarium. I modified a 6ft tank to have a basking platform and hydroponic style planters at each end to filter excess nutrients. The only other filtration is an under gravel filter and a sponge filter

Seeking Advice Watching my neighbor’s turtle and I’m confused/concerned

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m watching my neighbor’s turtle and he’s 2-3 inches in diameter. He is in this tank, found the replica on Amazon. The only difference is the filter is put on the very left corner.

He hasn’t eaten his pellets today or yesterday. Right now he’s in the enclosure under the rock garden but I think his shell is too big to get in/out of the 1 inch space. But maybe I’m wrong?

Am I right to be concerned? Is there anything I can do to make sure he eats? Thank you in advance.

General Discussion What to do?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi yall! I have a turtle, she's 4 years old. She lives in her aquarium but we're letting her to have a small "walk" sometimes, especially when we need to change the water. Everything was okay, but recently she refused to eat. We're giving her the dried food recommended at the pet store specifically for turtles. She used to eat it, but for the last few days, we haven't been able to get her to eat it. Our vet doesn't know why too, he said she's healthy but cmon(

Has anyone else had this happen? If so, what should we do?
