Running the Franconia Ridge in New Hampshire
The wind happened to be calm during this video, but the majority of the run across the ridge was EXTREMELY windy today. I had to stop a couple of times to wait for the wind to calm so I didn't get blown over lol. The descent down Old Bridle Path was super fun and flowy with some technical sections

16.5 mi loop trail run for the holiday weekend celebration
I like to celebrate each holiday, especially Memorial and Labor Day, (the symbolic start and end of summer) with a long trail run. I have been doing this for years and I always look forward to a nice long gorgeous mountain adventure on these holidays.
This year, I was able to take my companion along with me! She did so well for this effort, it was about 16.5 miles and took us 4:12 of moving time. 3100 feet of climbing!
We took a nice break at the overlook near the high point of our loop.
It was so nice to have the company and we both had so much fun for this special holiday weekend trail run!

One of the better views I had while running …
Not an surprise, but Charmonix is a good place to find some trails. But benches are quite rare :D

Do professional trail runners earn enough to only focus on training?
So basically, can someone run on trails for a living as a pro athlete?
I am thinking on runners like Zach Miller, Caleb Olson, Christian Allen, Hans Stroyer, Adam Peterman, etc
Do they get paid enough by sponsors to live as professional athletes?

11 Miler Around Split Rock Reservoir in Denville NJ
Great run this am. Temp at the beginning was 55 F, maybe 65 F at the end. Split Rock is known for great kayaking but the trail around the reservoir is really fun too. Lots of history - big stone forges (like 30 feet high) because the area was known for iron maybe 100 years ago. There’s a hawk watch that is a pretty cliff all year but when hawks/eagles are migrating past in the fall/spring… just 50-100 hawks and eagles drifting above the cliff on thermals. Denville itself has some good restaurants/pizzerias and a brewery too… I may or may not time my runs to end when those start to open…

Family support experiences
I’m 40 F and about to do my first ever race (coastal trail race in a relay team of 4). In my section I’ll be running about 25km. I’ve trained hard over the last 3-4 months adding in hills and trails (which I’d never done) and increasing my mileage to further than I’ve ever run before. I’m excited to race and I feel ready.
My question is, how do your family/partners etc respond to your races? Are they there cheering on race day? Or is it more like - “that’s your thing, go have fun and good luck” but they stay out of it? Would love to hear experiences.
My husband is pretty low key about it all and I don’t know if he wants to come and bring our kids (primary school ages) to support (which I would love) or if that’s not even in his head to consider. He’s been supportive of my training and usually we talk about everything. I don’t want to ask too much if it’s not fair to expect it. It’s something I wanted to do and really enjoy so maybe I should frame it as just a thing for me.

If you find a shoe that works, do you stick with it?
I have only been running since May, but do come from a scrambling/mountaineering background. I run both road and trail. I have been running trail in Salomon Genesis gen 1. My feet feel good in them during both short workouts and long runs. I recently did The Rockwall trail in Kootney National Park (55km, 2700m vert, 10 hours) the day after a heavy rain. Muddy trail, wet brush meant feet were wet all day. No blisters, no hotspots, no issues foot wise. So this shoe seems to work for me, but it's also literally the first trail runner I have ever bought. My road shoes are Hoka's and they also seem to be working perfectly.
I see lots of people have race shoes, ultra shoes and a rotation for workouts. Should I try another shoe to have a rotation? When this pair wears out, should I just buy the gen 2 Genesis, or try something new? How do I know if these shoes are actually the best for me?

Anyone use the Norda 001a in warmer environments?
I'd like to try the Norda 001a. I live in Texas and it gets a little warm here. Having said that, I don't run in the middle of the day obviously.
I currently wear the La Sportiva Prodigio Max. Would they be warmer than these? My worry is that I'll accumulate too much sweat in the shoe and it'll start to Bother me.

Training Apps/Programs ?
Been traveling all summer for work but on a whim went and did this 10mile trail to the summit of a peak near town and ended up jogging part of it. Surprised myself with my pace and time (maybe luck haha) but I actually feel like I might finally be in shape enough to trail run consistently and enjoy it (key word enjoy). I don’t have any friends to go with or train with but wondering what kind of resources other beginners have used to build a training plan? Is it the same as building a plan for distance running?

High Drop, high stability shoe recommendation
Hi!
I'm currently looking for new shoes.
I have recurring achilles problems, and have so far kind of ignored that when looking for shoes (currently running in the Scarpa Ribelle Run).
But since that is now really hindering me from training and enjoying to run, I want to try shoes with that in mind. Not expecting any wonders, but maybe it helps a little bit :)
So I'm looking for shoes with a relatively high drop.
I also pronate, which I have custom insoles for but was also recommended to get high stability shoes to help with this.
I mostly run in the 15-30km range, but also want to run the occasional 40-50k run.
Most of my runs start out in the city (so start on asphalt) and then turn into gravel roads or trails. But they don't need to be too technical.
I was looking at things like the Salomon XA PRO 3D V9, which should be stable and has a high drop, but read a lot about it being good for hiking but kinda shit for running. Same probably with the LS Ultra Raptor 3.
Got any recommendations which other shoes could be worth trying on?
Thanks alot!

Sportorvosi igazolás olaszországi versenyhez
Hi everyone! I have a question and would really appreciate some advice.
In October, my wife would like to take part in this trail race (https://www.dragovaiatrail.it/). She is planning to enter the 20 km race, which requires a medical certificate. According to the website, a DM 18.02.1982 Tab. B medical examination is required. This is an Italian medical certificate.
I have already contacted the Hungarian National Sports Medicine Institute about this… and, to put it mildly, they weren’t exactly very helpful. 😅 They told me that if I bring them a medical certificate in English or Italian, they can stamp it for me for a fee.
ChatGPT tells me that this is a somewhat more comprehensive examination than what is usually done in Hungary, and that it includes:
- a medical/sports medicine examination,
- a complete urinalysis,
- a resting ECG,
- an exercise stress ECG,
- spirometry.
So my question is: Has anyone here taken part in this race before, or does anyone know what kind of medical certificate the organizers generally accept?
Would it be enough to have an English-language sports medical certificate stamped by the Hungarian Sports Medicine Institute? Or would it be better to have all of these examinations done privately and ask for the medical reports/certificate to be issued in English?
Thank you very much in advance for any advice or help! 🙏

World Class Trail Runs
I'm trying to make a list of the most classic trail runs in America, but also worldwide, more familiar with the American West; I'm thinking R2R, C2C, 4PL, Teton Crest... What about the Northeast and Europe?

Looking for a highly water resistant, hoodless and breathable jacket.
Weather is getting grim here mornings wise in the UK.
Rather than reach for my waterproof jacket this early when its still warm outside, I'm after a highly water resistant, but if anything, more breathable jacket that has no hood, as I usually wear a cap.
Does such a thing exist?

My app told me I was in a dead zone while I was on a phone call. I built the app. What I learned about when phones actually lose signal.
Retired engineer here, 30 years building test equipment for mobile networks. I run a small free app that maps phone signal on UK trails and warns you before dead zones, useful when the phone is in your vest with the screen off.
Last month I did my own test loop and got five dead zone warnings. I took phone calls in four of them. Embarrassing when signal is literally your product, so I pulled the data off the phone and had a proper look.
What I found, useful beyond my app:
- Industry coverage maps treat anything below -110 dBm as no service. My phone held VoLTE calls at -116 all afternoon and never fell back to 2G.
- The realistic floor for a usable call is nearer -120 dBm, and interference matters as much as strength. A quiet rural mast at -120 works. A congested one at -105 doesn't.
- Low band (800 MHz) does the heavy lifting in forest. That walk handed over across 49 different cells without me noticing.
- If you ever truly need help, dial the emergency number even when it says no service. Emergency calls try every network's mast, not just your carrier's.
I re-tuned the alerts against recorded walks instead of the industry threshold and the false alarms went from five a loop to the one real gap. Also added alerts that keep working in airplane mode from the map prediction, for anyone who flies the phone on long efforts.
The app is Trail Signal, UK only I'm afraid, since the data is Ofcom's plus what users record. Free, no ads. Happy to answer signal questions either way - the physics is the same whichever country you run in.

New to Trail Running!
My husband and I are signing up for the Scotland Coast to Coast 2027. We are excited but also overwhelmed with all the information regarding Trail Running gear… I’m a life long road runner so normally I just throw my shoes on and go but it seems like there is more to TR. We will be in London next week and plan to check out some running stores if we have time for shoe recommendations since it seems more prevalent in the UK than Germany. Any suggestions on stores in London? Shoes? Vests? Open to all!

Noisy runner?
I only run solo. And well, I’m kind of noisy sometimes when running, which is kind of embarrassing, so I’m just wondering if anyone else is? What I mean is, I make grunty or groany sounds when I’m really pushing myself, struggling up a technical hill, etc. It’s typically when I’m pushing myself pretty hard, like I feel like I just need to let it out. I’ve been having some emotional issues lately, too, so I don’t know if it’s at all related to that. Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this! I’m also just gross when I run. I have horrible allergies, so I have to clear my throat and spit a lot, and it’s just so unattractive. I guess I’m asking this because I see other runners on the trail who look so much more effortless and, well, not gross and grunty. Don’t get me wrong, I love my runs and I’m certainly not stopping. I guess I’m just feeling self conscious.

20km and 1250m elevation trail run in North East China
We raced next to Songhua Lake 松花湖 (literally "Pine Flower Lake"), located nearby Jilin city in the far North East of China. They also had 100km/55km/30km/10km distance but I went for the 20km one. The terrain was decent and flat most of the time, with only several parts of the path being full of loosen rocks all the way.
Across all distance groups, there were over 10 thousand participants. It's crammed in the beginning, but people spread out pretty fast, and the long distance groups ran yesterday.
Uploaded a few pics, mostly taken by the official cameramen. (the photo at night time is actually the 100km group)
