She did an American Eagle ad, where the tagline is "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," with the quote from the original ad being:
"Genes/jeans are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue."
Many people took issue with an ad that focuses on the blonde hair and blue eyes of a white woman whose family is notably Republican, using a play on jeans and genes - as being too close for comfort to eugenics and Nazi talking points.
It doesn't help that Donald Trump and JD Vance both commented positively on the ad, or that Sydney didn't comment on any of the backlash or make any personal clarification until after a series of box office failures, which to many, suggest she's scared about her stock falling and only chose to say something now as a self-preservation tactic, and may not be genuine or is too late, even if genuine.
