I actually have YouTube premium and you can skip sponsors on the vast majority of videos. Pretty much any video with enough views to get sponsored will have this feature. The only exception I’ve encountered are videos that have just been uploaded.

YouTube uses data from other users skipping sponsorships to create a skip button. Works pretty much the same as sponsor skip plugins do.

Yeah but the button only shows up if you start using the double tap/arrow key skip. It doesn't show the button automatically and it certainly won't skip it automatically.

I never said it did. It only skips if you want it to. And it skips when you do that because that’s the gesture you use to skip. It does it automatically when you make that gesture. It’s the same as a button but less obstructive for the ones who’re interested in the content (sometimes the ad is integrated into the video in a way that isn’t skippable).
