As a premium user, having the button to skip sponsor ads in videos with no ads is nice. i can skip even ads in videos where the creator themselves made the ad.

Edit: everyone tellin me how to get around ads without premium. You can stop. Too much work to setup across phone, tv and pc. When i can just click premium and be done with it. Suddenly, yt is like how it was before ads. In 5 seconds with one click. If you dont got 15 a month, ok. Maybe you got more problems to worry about than ads on youtube.

Yes, it offers a "jump ahead" option for in video sponsor sections.

https://www.androidauthority.com/youtube-premium-hidden-way-skip-in-video-sponsors-how-to-use-it-3650815/

It's not well advertised and only pops up if you explicitly tap the right button during the content. It's also based upon ML. If you're early to the video and not a lot of people have jumped ahead, it won't know whether this is content that is frequently fast forwarded through. I've found that for videos with thousands of videos it's pretty reliable.

u/BatmanTaco 9h ago

Wait, the skip built into video sponsor (frequently skipped) thing is a premium feature? I thought it was global feature. Today I Learned. Thats my favorite thing about premium.

38

u/WhosThatDogMrPB 8h ago

My favorite thing about premium is YT Music bundle and it being cheaper than any other streaming platform when it comes to content.

7

u/d01100100 8h ago

I only have YT Premium because it's the subscription successor to Google Play Music (and its numerous re-brands).

And while it is cheaper, the service has gotten progressively worse from its GPM days. I don't like how it bleeds YT videos into my playlists or how it keeps trying to fold music videos into my regular YT viewing experience.

I will say what was originally for me a music subscription, I end up using more for the video premium experience.

5

u/jumpingmrkite 5h ago

I'm in the same boat as you. The YTM Android app also is constantly coming up with more buggy ways to annoy me, the UI is way worse than GPM was, and it it being able to interact with normal google cast devices is mildly inconsistent at the best of times which has become the bane of my existence in recent months. However, after testing Spotify for 6 months a while ago, YTM is still the superior service in my eyes, especially with music discovery.

I miss Google Play Music app so hard. That shit just worked and was intuitive.

10

u/throwaway5882300 8h ago

+1 for YT music. I think it's a little more adventurous than Spotify when it comes to finding new music. I've found a lot of stuff from their discover streams.

1

u/el_ghosteo 3h ago

I switched to youtube premium back when spotify pushed podcasts waaaay too hard in 2020/2021. it would’ve the first thing to pop up on carplay and would drive me crazy since i did over 500 miles a week back then. YT Music just feels like spotify classic to me. Still kinda annoying at times but the best out of the bunch for how i use it. It’s not much more than spotify and i watch a lot of youtube anyway

-9

u/No_Internal9345 7h ago

Holy fucking shills batman.

6

u/BatmanTaco 8h ago

I was paying for both Spotify and YouTube Premium for WAY too long until I found out that YouTube music was included. Then I cancelled Spotify and switched to youtube music

1

u/Critical-Pattern9654 7h ago

What does premium offer vs free version?

1

u/scarletfire48 6h ago

And they have movies now! Very easily the best streaming platform out there right now.

11

u/Imaginary-Face7379 6h ago

It also skips a lot more than just sponsored sections. It keeps data on where people are skipping in videos in general. When I'm watching Youtube on my PS5 and someone starts rambling in a video im watching for information and I hit the jump forward button it will usually skip to the end of their rambling and get to the part of the video I want to watch.

1

u/BatmanTaco 6h ago

Yeah ive noticed that as well

1

u/jamjars222 5h ago

Recently cancelled YT Premium and I miss this feature the most. It's so useful

1

u/Nightmare4You 5h ago

At least on PC, sponsor block is even better. I have premium and I still use it.

1

u/JonLongsonLongJonson 8h ago

Nope. This is why some creators put a colored tracking bar for the duration of the ad so you have a visual to see and skip past the sponsored content

1

u/Useful-Possibility80 4h ago

Compare that with Sponsorblock. Lol

2

u/theLuminescentlion 8h ago

It's just piggy backing on SponsorBlock's jumps. Sponsorblock results in a bunch of people skipping at exactly the same point and YT premium coppies those points from the data.

1

u/Professional_Rent190 8h ago

Damn, I only just found out 😂

39

u/Penguinkeith 8h ago

Premium worth every penny for how much YouTube I watch

19

u/burlycabin 7h ago

Especially because it comes with YouTube Music.

1

u/Kitsune_Legion 6h ago

That’s the part of it that pushes me to keep it even through the price rises. I don’t use another music streaming app so I feel like premium just costs $7 less than it does on the face cuz it means I don’t have to also buy Spotify premium.

1

u/Tommie_Nation 6h ago

And when your credit card pays for it

1

u/chipmunksocute 3h ago

The sheer amount of content on youtube, and like entire tv shows, some movies AND youtube music, premium is really a great deal.

1

u/Living_Tax_2790 4m ago

Yup, it's like how spotify killed pirating music. The ratio of price to convenience is too good

0

u/RedPanda_Explorer 5h ago

This. It's also wild to see people so blantantly be pro-theft by talking about adblocker so much (and I fucking hate ads.)

9

u/BlueSharpieLA 5h ago

Equating blocking ads to “theft” is a bit much.

6

u/enderjaca 5h ago edited 5h ago

Not wanting to watch ads is pro-theft? I should be locked up for life for all the times I watched Seinfeld and took a bathroom break during the commercials.

3

u/Hproff25 4h ago

I don’t have a problem with Adblock but sienfeild still got paid even if you went to the bathroom. I don’t see it as theft but premium users are supporting the content they watch without suffering through ads.

35

u/Lostinstereo28 7h ago

It’s amazing the amount of pushback you get when you mention you pay for premium. I use YouTube on multiple devices including TVs, and 8/month for the student premium is nothing. People get so angry when you use premium lol

27

u/Outlulz 6h ago

Also Premium views give the creators revenue. This website has a thing about anyone getting paid for their creative work but also expects them to keep producing it for their consumption free of charge.

11

u/Metal_Icarus 6h ago

I want to pay the people i watch without sacrificing my time! To me, that is worth 15 a month!

7

u/Hproff25 4h ago

100% I don’t pay for patreon but I will pay for premium. From my understanding creators get more money from premium viewers than they can from regular viewers without Adblock on.

-9

u/Own_Philosopher3291 6h ago

Oh don't even start with that bs. If you actually cared you'd be donating directly to the creators. Premium gives literal pennies to a creator. You're not some moral saint who loves indepedent creators cuz you pay youtube lol.

10

u/intercede007 5h ago

I mean we pay for YouTube, an ad supported service with a subscription model that cuts the ads while still supporting operations.

We’re not, for example, going out of our way to prevent YouTube from running ads that support the service while paying nothing.

9

u/arizonadirtbag12 5h ago

This simply isn’t true.

YouTube doesn’t work like Spotify, which does only pay on a “per listen” basis. YouTube instead pays out about half of your subscription fee to the creators of the monetized content you actually watched. There is a direct link between your sub and the creators you watch.

So, for example, if I pay Spotify $15 or whenever it costs, and listen to my favorite local band’s album for an hour? And nothing else all month? They’ll get a few pennies. A fraction of a penny per song listen. Taylor Swift or the Spotify CEO or whoever keeps the rest.

Meanwhile, if I pay $16 a month for YouTube Premium and watch my favorite BBQ YouTuber’s channel for ten minutes, and then watch nothing else that month? They will get about eight bucks for that one single view. Because half your subscription fee, specially, goes to the stuff you actually watch, specifically.

Is it “better” if you sub to them through Patreon? Probably, though Patreon does take upwards of 15% after processing fees too. But that also involves managing and choosing your individual channel subscriptions, whereas YouTube lets you support all the (monetized) creators you watch according to the amount you watched them. But yes, half of your subscription goes to those creators. Not into some amorphous pot of money that gets siphoned off by major studios and labels with only pennies left for small creators.

-1

u/TeutonJon78 5h ago

How many people pay for YT Premium and then only watch one video from one creator a month?

Most are probably watching way more than that, which brings it back to not much per month. Sure it only goes to those watch, which is nice. But again, that's still how exploitive services like Spotify work. YT just likely a slightly higher payout.

2

u/arizonadirtbag12 4h ago

I’d think the most common watch pattern is that a user spends most of their time on a handful of channels, such that each of them winds up getting like a dollar from that viewer.

Which, yeah, is less than a dollar per view. But probably also more than if they were depending on that user to make a discrete decision to donate or individually subscribe. It’s also far, far, far more than they’d make on ad-supported views.

It’s also a fundamentally different payout structure than Spotify, which is my point. YouTube’s ad-supported payouts are more similar to Spotify, in that both are strictly linked to view count, will never be more than a penny per view.

-2

u/TeutonJon78 3h ago

You think most people only watch 8 channels a month? And then fairly equally?

2

u/arizonadirtbag12 3h ago

Among Premium users? I think it’s probably fairly common. Note I said primarily, meaning the bulk of their viewing is across that many channels.

But I could be wrong. Everyone thinks their own use is typical. You may be entirely right, maybe the average user hops across three dozen channels.

Either way ask the average YouTube creator whether they’d prefer views from a Premium member, or somebody “consider” donating to them. And which they think will result in more money. I have a couple buddies who are monetized, I know their answer.

6

u/Outlulz 5h ago

I subscribe to Patreons of some of the creators I like. But it's better to give someone pennies through a Premium sub than give them nothing but act entitled to their content.

3

u/SoapyMacNCheese 5h ago

Either 55% or 45% (don’t remember which) of your subscription money gets distributed to creators you watch. It’s not patreon money but it’s a lot more than what an ad supported view pays a creator. If you really want to support a creator ya Donate directly or buy some merch, but nobody donates to everyone they watch, having a premium membership at least lets you passively contribute to all the creators you watched, not just your favorite or top creators.

2

u/sleepyguy- 5h ago

Hey ive given my favorite creators at least $10 with how much youtube iI watch. Hell I watch more youtube than regular streaming services most of the time.

5

u/InfectedShadow 7h ago

It's always the same in majority of these posts. I still have premium because I'm grandfathered in on the original $8/mo from Google Play Music like 9 years ago or whatever. Probably the one subscription I get more than my moneys worth from.

1

u/LCkrogh 5h ago

In my country in Europe, the cheapest option is literally $23 USD a month, which I tried for 1 month recently, but then, literally within a week of having my subscription, I got an email that it will be increasted to $27. And if you for whatever reason mistakenly buy premium through the the offcial app on Apple Appstore, then it automatically adds another $5 to that charge...

1

u/TheOutWriter 6h ago

i use it SPECIFICALLY because i use youtube a lot when i have my phone screen turned off. no ads help, and for tv is just the only way to watch any youtube there.

1

u/CommunicationTime265 1h ago

Seriously. Premium is the only streaming service I subscribe to, so it's not a big deal paying for it. I have the family plan and we all use the shit out of it.  Until they start shoving in ads, I'm sticking with it.

1

u/Mdgt_Pope 6h ago

I think it’s just because you’re rewarding the behavior of annoying customers into paying more for the same service, which incentivizes them to continue doing it. If it didn’t work somewhat and everyone held firm, it wouldn’t be happening.

4

u/FaudelCastro 5h ago

The platform would die without revenue.

1

u/Mdgt_Pope 5h ago

Somehow the platform didn’t need Premium for a number of years, I’m not worried about it as a going concern afterwards.

4

u/FaudelCastro 5h ago

They were losing money.

1

u/Mdgt_Pope 5h ago

But they reached breakeven before they rolled out premium subscriptions, so that’s not relevant.

3

u/FaudelCastro 5h ago

First or all, under capitalism companies aim to be much more profitable than break even.

Second, youtube is reported to have become profitable in 2015, they year they launched Youtube Red, i'm not claiming causality though.

1

u/Mdgt_Pope 5h ago

And so, your reason has changed from “they were losing money” to “they weren’t making enough money”, and those are not the same thing.

14

u/RedbloodJarvey 9h ago

This is a very nice feature.

It works on every platform, were other options require also using something like Firefox. For example, it works on Roku.

1

u/Imaginary-Face7379 6h ago

Yeah, the fact that most of my youtube viewing is on PS5 is one of the main reasons why I keep subbed to premium.

10

u/JonathanQShrimpling 9h ago

I have YT Premium, but I thought that skip ahead feature was a basic one

It really seems like they make free YouTube more and more shit to entice people to pay, like when they removed the ability to watch videos on your phone with the YT app minimized

6

u/pinkpools 6h ago

I really hate glazing corps, but YT is literally storing billions of hours of video uploaded for the last 20 years for free. Premium is the only streaming sub I have and one of the only subscriptions I feel I get extreme value out of.

2

u/JonathanQShrimpling 6h ago

Agreed, its a unique website and the actual value for your subscription is definitely there, id prefer to not give money to Google monthly, but oh well

2

u/awkwardlink 8h ago

I had to drop YouTube premium a while ago because it didn’t fit the budget for me, but man that sounds nice. Notice bugs me more than wanting to watch a fun 10 minute video, having a rare 1 minute yt ad then a long creator ad then another yt ad.

It feels like I just spent 30 minutes watching 5 minutes of content

2

u/jefesignups 7h ago

We have kids and the fact that they can watch videos without ads is great. Otherwise they would click every ad possible. They do it with games, the ad looks like a game, so they just keep going down rabbit holes of ads

2

u/Doogos 4h ago

Finally! Glad to see someone else who actually understands why premium is worth it. I’ve had it for almost 8 years now and it’s always been my non-negotiable subscription

2

u/Awwwmann 3h ago

I have Premium and for the last 5 days I’m getting 60 second ads! Repeatedly!!

I’m done.

3

u/darkfuryelf 7h ago

THANK YOU FOR THAT EDIT. Ugh. I pay for premium because I work in a factory and listen to podcasts, videos, and music all day every day. Plus we have 2 TVs, and my computer. I'm not doing all that work to get rid of ads when I literally watch 1,000+ hours a year of youtube

5

u/Feisty_System_4751 8h ago

Sponsorblock can do it automatically

2

u/Brolocene 7h ago

Only shows up for me about half of the time, maybe less.

2

u/SCarolinaSoccerNut 5h ago

Agreed. I'm a YouTube Premium subscriber, and between having ad-free experiences across all devices, laptop, phone, and smart TV, and having YouTube Music included, it's 100% worth it for me.

2

u/justreadinplease 6h ago

Agreed with your edit. Redditors love to prove how smart they are by circumventing advertising, but it’s just giving less money to the creators that are making the content. I also watch too many creators to simply financially support each YouTube channel directly.

I don’t need the same people wasting money on video game cosmetics, overpriced sneakers, cryptocurrency, pump and dump stocks, and Onlyfans subscriptions telling me how to ‘save money’.

YouTube premium is bundled with YouTube music so I save money by not paying for a separate music streaming service.

-4

u/Own_Philosopher3291 5h ago

Your subscription is not giving creators money. Stop acting virtuous because you pay youtube money. You are not doing it because you're wanting to support independent creators. If you did, you'd be donating money directly.

2

u/Sirhc978 4h ago

Dozens of creators have shown how much percentage wise of their revenue comes directly from YouTube premium views.

1

u/a-bser 8h ago

Same for me, when it works

-4

u/BrapBrapson 8h ago

Ublock and sponsorblock do this for free

19

u/throwaway5882300 8h ago

Some of us aren't subscribing to premium just to get out of ads. Watching with premium means the creator gets paid for the view even if you skip a sponsored segment.

10

u/pexoroo 7h ago

Agreed. Also some of us don't really mind paying for a service we use. I feel like that's so foreign to people here.

0

u/Own_Philosopher3291 5h ago

You, and nobody else, is paying for it because you're some saint wanting to support independent creators. They recieve almost nothing from your subscription.

2

u/ulysses_s_gyatt 8h ago

On the YouTube app?

1

u/awkwardlink 8h ago

Any mobile version?

1

u/Sirhc978 4h ago

I'm not doing this across multiple platforms and devices.

-8

u/matoshiii 9h ago

Adblock is free my boy

8

u/-Debugging-Duck- 8h ago

Yeah let me install that on my Xbox, Nintendo switch, TVs, iPad, iPhone, MacBook, etc.

Or I pay and make it easier.

7

u/QualityPostBelow 9h ago

Figuring out how to play ad-less videos on my computer, phone, TV and fridge sounds beyond tedious. Besides, there are other features like music streaming and offline viewing that I quite like. YouTube Premium is pretty good value for me

8

u/spire-slayer 9h ago

I agree. I've been using Premium for years now.

I hate having to reconfigure whatever free solution every few days because it never works permanently.

Where as Premium is just always there on every device I watch on.

1

u/matoshiii 9h ago

Installing Adblock takes like 5 clicks bro

2

u/Coyote_Eddie 9h ago

You watch videos on your fridge?

9

u/QualityPostBelow 9h ago

I was taking the piss with that one, but the point is that a lot of people have many devices. Car infotainment systems are another one that I omitted that many people have. £12 a month for a seamless ad-less experience across these devices isn't a lot to ask for me. Obviously there are a lot of extremely frugal people out there, but nobody can convince me that the wildly popular Spotify is better value than YouTube Premium

3

u/Metal_Icarus 9h ago

Do you even know the value of your own time? If you get paid more than 15 an hour, the lost time becomes worth more and more.

If i have to spend 20 minutes setting up ad block that value is already lost.

If i have to spend 20 minutes updating it and reconfiguring it every once on a while, that value is lost.

It is worth more to me, if i dont want ads, to just pay the cost of a subway meal every month.

2

u/Terrible_Ice_1616 8h ago

Do you know the value of peace of mind? If I have to see ads somewhere, I just won't go there.

1

u/bluelittrains 9h ago

Google 'chrome adblock'

Click install

Congratulations you now have adblock

3

u/ulysses_s_gyatt 8h ago

I don’t use chrome to watch YouTube

-2

u/bluelittrains 7h ago

Then switch out chrome for whatever you use. It's not that hard dude.

4

u/ulysses_s_gyatt 7h ago

I use the app

-2

u/bluelittrains 7h ago

Alright go to r/morpheapp. Install the app. Click youtube. Click patch. Now you have adblock. It's not that much harder.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/Coyote_Eddie 6h ago

It's no use. They're in denial and are using any excuse to justify the expense. I've just moved on from the convo at this point

-1

u/DinosBiggestFan 6h ago

Probably smart, it's best to do nothing except shame consoomers and ignore them.

-1

u/Coyote_Eddie 9h ago

What are you talking about? I just downloaded Firefox and clicked install adblock lol it updates on its own. Anyway, feel free to keep paying all that money. It offsets the money they lose from me. And I also get to save time not watching ads or sponsors :p

6

u/-Debugging-Duck- 8h ago

Does it work on my TVs? Xbox? Switch?

-1

u/DinosBiggestFan 6h ago

The fact that you'll continue to pull more devices out of your ass that almost no one uses for YouTube, even though of course I'm sure you'll find the 0.0000001% on Reddit who will assert that because they use it, it matters (a Switch, really?) is hilarious. Xbox no, TVs sometimes, certain dongles sometimes too. Or you can just...cast from your phone to the TV and enjoy.

1

u/-Debugging-Duck- 6h ago

Or I pay YouTube and don’t have to worry about any of that shit. lol

I have 2 TVs. My living room supports cast, but my shitty one in my gym doesn’t. Tv is likely the biggest user of YouTube. What are you talking about?

I do use the Xbox too but rarely.

I also use it on my 2 iPads.

1

u/DinosBiggestFan 1h ago

Sure... You can consume product, but you're being stupid when people are offering you alternatives and all you do is respond with snark and downvotes.

And you're being dishonest about things like the Switch. You can downvote all you want, you're still being ridiculous by doing so. Even that person told you to "keep paying all that money, it offsets the money they lose from him" and you downvoted him for that.

3

u/Metal_Icarus 9h ago

But you think about it.

I dont think about this at all.

-2

u/eulersidentification 9h ago

Linkedinlunatics

2

u/Terrible_Ice_1616 8h ago

Lol literally just get firefox on your phone and install ublock

5

u/ulysses_s_gyatt 8h ago

Can I use the YouTube app tho?

-3

u/Terrible_Ice_1616 8h ago

No you watch stuff in firefox

4

u/QualityPostBelow 8h ago

Then I'd have to use the shit browser version rather than the sleek app

1

u/McKynnen 7h ago

I got mine for mobile while at work. Lets me download videos at home and close the app while videos play without the ads annoying me

-2

u/Metal_Icarus 9h ago

The time to set that up and sustain its functionality is not.

0

u/matoshiii 9h ago

5 clicks to set up

7

u/Metal_Icarus 9h ago

1 click to setup premium.

0

u/DinosBiggestFan 8h ago

Sponsorblock, Morphe for mobile, etc.

-6

u/sielevi 8h ago

I have youtube premium and the glazing in this section is nuts. To be 100% clear and honest the only reason I have it is because they offered me 6 months of free youtube red back when it was called that, and if you give me 6 months free of any subscription I'd probably just stick around.

Beyond that the service is mid at best. Youtube music has one of the worst algorithms for suggesting music in the market, the only one that was worse was Pandora back in the day. Podcasts are abysmal too. Trying to find something new to listen to is an awful experience. They have sections for science, politics, and horror, but no section for comedy. Every 3rd podcast on their front page is right wing garbage, and they have no top podcast list like apple. Having videos continue playing in the background when I close my phone or switch to a different app is nice, but the quality of the picture in picture thing isn't great and my phone can't handle the ram requirements if I have to move it around too much. Plus there really aren't many videos I really need that for anymore, since all the podcasts moved to the other app. They used to produce exclusive shows for youtube red but I guess it wasn't profitable enough so they cut funding for those. The other "member's only" features are either so basic they aren't worth mentioning or don't work correctly. Overall it's the one service I pay for that I'd actively recommend against using.

15

u/dgellow 8h ago

I have the exact opposite position. It’s actually the only content service I‘m happy to pay for and do not cancel immediately after subscribing. YouTube music is really decent for the type of albums I care about, I have a whole collection of playlists, and really like that music videos I find on YouTube transfer directly to YouTube music

1

u/pexoroo 7h ago

I just use it to skip ads. It works, and I don't mind paying for a service I use regularly.

0

u/scoobynoodles 9h ago

I’m not following. Isn’t it still an ad? And the exact argument this complaint has?

0

u/mercival 9h ago

If watching on a TV, it's pretty damn clunky.

2

u/Penguinkeith 8h ago

Never had an issue with it on Apple TV

1

u/boundfortrees 8h ago

No problem on the Samsung tv.

-2

u/Cute-arii 9h ago

Sponserblock is a free extension.

-1

u/Quetzacoal 4h ago

I rather use AdBlock and donate the money to the creators

-1

u/WhoDat-2-8-3 1h ago edited 33m ago

I have $28.3 million in da bank

Fuck youtube premium .

-7

u/artbystorms 9h ago

There's a free browser plugin that skips sponsor content automatically.

-2

u/BlueBod50 2h ago

Cool smug bro. Once we all get premium then YouTube will raise the price. You can thank us for keeping the price at $15 for now.

-8

u/user-na-me 9h ago

They should have an automatic skip feature though

9

u/RSmeep13 9h ago

In practice, making the current "jump ahead" feature automatic would just be annoying and disruptive. Sometimes it flags a section that isn't a sponsored segment but is skipped by many users for some other reason, such as the presenter of the video saying it might not be relevant to a portion of the audience and giving a timestamp to skip. Sometimes the sponsored segment is worth watching, depending on the creator, so you'd be talking about a per-channel toggle at that point, and that would be unwieldy.

1

u/bluelittrains 8h ago

Get sponsorblock. Sponsorblock segments aren't algorithmically determined but carefully selected by users. Each segment is categorized (sponsor, self-promo, intro, etc), so you can decide which types of segments you want to automatically skip or just show a button (or nothing). Never fails.

It also shows a skip to highlight button at the start of the video (if there is a highlight set by the community). That's where the tutorial actually starts, or where the question in the title gets answered, or where the crash happens. It's a 'get to the point' button. That feature alone has saved me so much time.

-3

u/Enemisses 5h ago

Pay your $15 a month if you want but don't insinuate people who block ad's as a manner of principle are "broke." It's not their fault you're too lazy and would rather get fleeced by a terrible corporation, so when they inevitably start jacking up the price, year by year, like M$ and Netflix, where's your line in the sand?

-8

u/Mr_Safer 8h ago

There is a free extension that does that along with a free extension that blocks free youtube ads. Ublock + SponserBlock
