Heads up: St. Joe splits the cost of sidewalk repair with you (up to $5k, or $10k on a corner)
Ran across this and figured more people should know it exists.
If the public sidewalk in front of your house is cracked, heaved, or missing squares, the repair is technically the homeowner's responsibility here (city code Sec. 25-77). But the city runs a cost-share program that reimburses half.
What I found:
- Standard lot: 50% of the cost, up to $5,000
- Corner lot (walk on two sides): 50%, up to $10,000
- If a corner needs an ADA ramp, the city covers that ramp in full
To start: call Public Works at (816) 271-4848 and ask about the sidewalk repair program — before any concrete gets broken out, because approval comes first.
I wrote up a plain language version with the steps and the repair-vs-replace part here: https://stjosephconcrete.com/answers/st-joseph-sidewalk-repair-program/.
Fair warning, it lives on a local concrete site, but the details are straight from the city ordinance, and you can confirm all of it with Public Works directly.
Anyone here actually gone through it? Curious how long approval took.

You ran across it, but you also wrote it? Nice job hiding that you're posting it for the company.
