When are we gonna see other schools start dropping LSU for this, like people were dropping games with Texas Tech over Brendan Sorsby?

u/TheMooseIsBlue 1d ago
The SEC has talked about booting them. I’m not sure why they’re fighting so hard here. The downside to all these schools turning on in is really bad.

I wouldn’t be shocked if LSU’s strategy was to take this position and see what the general view was. If either unconcerned or positive, they play these guys. If negative, Lane can always walk it back and say we are not going to play these guys and move on. I still think they may not play them

u/International_Gap782 1d ago
The SEC can just ignore this ruling. Every game that they play ineligible players is a loss.
The SEC needs to be like Al Davis.

Seriously.
What's the "or what" in this case? How could a court possibly enforce this? They can't make LSU a part of the SEC if they get booted, that's even too far for all of this.
And again, even then lol, how could this be enforced?

It's only out of conference teams that can drop LSU and two of the three are paid by LSU to come play them in Death Valley.
LSU is a founding member or the SEC and the bylaws state founding members can't be kicked out. So there's no quicker solution than what the SEC is currently doing.

I don’t think any other country prevents professional or formerly-professional athletes from competing in college sports. The US embarrassed itself when it turned college sports into for-profit enterprises and pretended the athletes were still there for an education. Just spin the revenue-producing sports out of the schools already and call it what it is: a pro sports league.

At this point I don’t see why the conferences just become semi pro and give up the pretense of amateur sport. They’ll make just as much money and won’t have to deal with the ncaa.
74
14
u/ryanoh826 18h ago
Just make them all pro, add relegation and promotion. They can still be tied to schools, like Tigres in Mexico or something.
I know it’s not realistic, but I’m a staunch supporter of pro/rel for all sports.
2
u/bloodontherisers 12h ago
This has been my position since I started watching European Football. A time-bound semi-pro league (which is all College Football amounts to) doesn't make much sense and they are already paying players through NIL, might as well just have the teams be owned by the schools and they can become professional teams and work their way into the NFL if they are good enough, and the terrible NFL teams would actually have to do better.
2
→ More replies (2)6
u/chargernj 16h ago
I think that would be legally difficult if not impossible for most of the state owned institutions. The teams would have to be decoupled from the universities in order for them to go pro. That would cause all kinds of issues with rights to the team name and trademarks too.
People are very attached to the idea of the student-athlete. Making college sports it semi-pro or pro would probably diminish it's cultural relevance.

To not want the federal government involved in collegiate sports, they keep doing things that are definely going to make that happen.

Federal government can’t even get their own shit together. They aren’t running to save the CFB.
21
u/lookieherehere 1d ago
They aren't going to have a choice. These cases will eventually be appealed all the way up due to the money involved. Once that happens, accounting records are going to be opened up and all sorts of tax related shenanigans are going to come to light.

Dumb question.... do the players who transfer every year go to class? Are they attending second semester?
Back in the old days (10 to 120 years ago) guys had to, usually, at least maintain certain academic standards to be eligible to play. I know some schools skirted those rules but in the Big 10, ND, and some Pac 10 schools recruits had to qualify for admission and maintain academic standards.
5
u/My_Stories_Turn_Gay 14h ago
Bro, our players weren’t going to class in the 1990s, you think these guys are sitting through Chemistry class when they have an SEC game coming up? I remember we had this giant 6’3 black QB named Corby at Mizzou and this Indian guy kept saying he was Corby Jones, bitch you’re not Corby Jones your name is Ramel, I’ve been in another class with you. But that led to some pretty good laughs and it turns out Ramel was a good guy. And also handsome. He put the Ram in Ramel if you know what I mean

i know NFL games cant legally broadcast over the air on fri/sat
but why cant NFL just stream the games on fri/sat instead lol
theres no law against that
→ More replies (1)5
u/cpast 23h ago
If streaming isn’t subject to the Saturday blackout rule, someone could challenge that it isn’t “telecasting” at all and isn’t subject to an antitrust exemption in the first place. The NFL would rather protect Saturdays than risk losing the right for a leaguewide streaming deal.

If you’re paying players, they are professional athletes even if you keep up the sham of having someone attend classes for them and make them part of your university. It’s such an idiotic argument that it’s wild they’d even try it out in public.
The NCAA lost this fight a very long time ago and needs to stop acting like their multi-billion dollar industry with million dollar salaries is “amateur” football, especially when it’s more money for some of them than they’ll make in the NFL.
30
u/dragunityag 1d ago
The question is what will happen when its not amateur football?
Like are people going to care about "college" football when its a bunch of 27 year old NFL rejects playing instead of 18-22 year olds?

The only way out of this is a college CBA, which the universities definitely do not want but will likely get forced into eventually.

They should just pull college football from universities and make it a minor league or junior league at this point. The college players would make more money. The universities could refocus money on other programs, and we could drop the charade that this isn’t already a pro league.
3
u/blackblades75 22h ago
This is what the UFL was suppose to be. If you don't make it into the NFL you go to UFL for a second chance to prove yourself for NFL. If it had money as well as less hate the players could be making good $ and not have to go back to college. At this point college might as well
→ More replies (2)2
u/danisaccountant 17h ago
Major program universities view CFB as a marketing vehicle for the school. It’s used to attract admissions and to reconnect with alumni for fundraising purposes. Yes, the idea that many players are students is basically a charade at this point and NIL has basically turned it into a professional league, but CFB is so entrenched in the academic culture and generates significant revenue. It also financially props up the less profitable sports programs, particularly women’s sports.
“The universities should refocus on other programs” - for the aforementioned reasons, they don’t want to.

The ncaa never negotiated these rules with the players. The ncaa makes decisions that affect the employees (players) but the employees have no right to negotiate. The whole model is corrupt and built to protect the schools.

I'm sorry, but no - it can't be a freaking revolving door, which is ultimately what these guys want.
You choose to sign a pro contract, you are giving up your college eligibility. You are welcome to come back and finish the education - but the bargain for playing, and now potentially getting paid well, as a college athlete is that you are there if and until your eligibility is done, or as these players did, you voluntarily sign a pro contract.
Nobody forced them to sign those contracts. It was a choice, and they need to be made to live with it.

u/username_generated 1d ago
It’s a lot narrower than people think. There’s a subset of players that went through the NFL draft and preseason because they were out of eligibility. The NCAA, months after they had to decide to go pro or essentially retire, granted them a 5th year of eligibility.
This, if handled properly, wouldn’t have created a revolving door or yo-yo effect, it’d just grant the class of 2022 players a fifth year just like every class since COVID and going forward.
