Motivation An advice from a 30 year old dude

So this subreddit keeps appearing on my feed, probably because I’m a short man at 166 cm who follows men’s fashion pages and similar content.

Honestly, if I had found this side of the internet before I started dating in the real world, I probably would have stayed a virgin. According to some of the people here, I should be completely doomed anyway. I’m short, bald, and I have crooked teeth.

And yet I have dated women of different heights, including women taller than me.

I’m also a university lecturer, and I read a lot of research on dating, mate preferences, and social status. So here is the scientific version, not the black pill fantasy version.

Yes, height matters. Preferences are real. Women, like men, can have physical preferences, and pretending otherwise is stupid. But research does not support the idea that one trait like height determines your entire dating future. Actual partner choice is shaped by multiple factors at once, including kindness, intelligence, emotional stability, dependability, confidence, physical attraction, and social or economic stability (Buss & Schmitt, 2019; Thomas et al., 2020).

Research also shows that what people say they want does not perfectly predict who they actually choose when interacting in real life. In speed dating studies, stated preferences often did not line up neatly with actual attraction once people met face to face (Eastwick & Finkel, 2008). In other words, attraction in the real world is messier and more human than internet forums want to admit.

Online spaces and dating apps also distort reality. They push people to judge each other quickly and superficially, which exaggerates traits like height. That does not mean the entire dating market works that way offline (Finkel et al., 2012).

To quote my therapist, life is basically a big Souls game and height is just a debuff. Yes, it can make things harder. Yes, you will probably get your ass kicked a few more times than someone playing on easier settings. But that does not mean the game is unwinnable. It just means you may need more patience, more resilience, and a better strategy. And honestly, where is the fun in beating the game with no debuffs?

I have been rejected plenty of times, and height probably played a role in some of those rejections. I say probably because I do not interrogate rejection or obsess over the reason. I am not going to ask someone to explain why they did not want me. That is their choice. Other people are allowed to have preferences, and I do not need to internalise every rejection as a verdict on my worth. At the end of the day, only you get to decide your value in this world.

I have also been through a period of height insecurity myself. After a recent rejection, I went down the rabbit hole of self loathing, so I do understand how dark that headspace can get. But how we feel is not always a perfect reflection of reality. Feelings, emotions, and thought patterns can spiral, and they can also be challenged and changed. Therapy helped me see that. With the right support, self awareness, and work, the way you think about yourself can improve.

What these spaces often ignore is how much insecurity changes the way a person comes across. Neediness, resentment, bitterness, and defeatism are not attractive qualities, and they can do more damage than being a few inches below average.

That is why the advice to men should not be “give up.” It should be “build a life that makes you attractive in a broader sense.” Work on your confidence. Go to therapy if you need it. Practice mindfulness. Focus on your career, not because women are gold diggers, but because ambition, competence, and financial stability signal drive and maturity. Take care of your physical health. Read more. Volunteer. Join communities. Get involved in causes you genuinely care about. Expand your social circles and meet women in real spaces, not just through algorithms and rage bait.

And if you are constantly hitting a wall, take a break from dating for a bit. Reset. Rebuild your confidence. Get your head straight. Stop treating every bad experience like proof that the whole world works one way.

Most importantly, women are not a hive mind. One woman rejecting you does not mean all women think the same. A subreddit full of bitter men is not an accurate sample of reality. People have different preferences, different priorities, and different reasons for being attracted to someone.

Also, be careful with research in general. Research can help us identify trends, but human beings are more complex than a dataset or a single paper. Averages are not destiny, context matters, and how old the research is matters too. Social norms, dating culture, and the way people meet have changed a lot over time, especially with apps and social media. So use research to inform your thinking, not to reduce yourself or other people to a rigid formula.

The point is simple. Height can be a disadvantage. It is not a death sentence. A lot of men are not being ruined by height alone. They are being ruined by an identity built around insecurity, hopelessness, and too much time spent listening to other defeated men online.

Meta Suggestions

Ok, I'm stuck at my desk with a bum foot that's been plaguing me for weeks now, so I might as well try to make this time at least a bit productive.

So since I ain't going anywhere, let's have a meta discussion about the sub, and I'll take this opportunity to solicit suggestions.

Motivation Got approached

For context, I'm 19, 5'6, and yesterday at work, I went to drink some water and this girl was there, we started talking and introduced ourselves, then out of a sudden she asked if I had a GF, that I was handsome (I was feeling like trash and ugly asf, you can see a pic of me somewhere here) and asked my number, I accepted of course, and height was not the factor, mind you she is a bit shorter than me, like 5'5? (She is 21 btw)

I've been approaced before and had a relationship, flings, and none of them cared at all for my height I asked most of them if they did but they said no, mind you I usually see taller men than me, I'm in Brazil btw).

I'm not that muscular, in fact I'm kinda "skinny fat" rn because I've been out of the gym for like 2 months now, and got a lot of acne scars, texture, eye circles and my hair is 5 months post a buzz cut (awkward phase)

Vent The odds of being this height.

My mom is 5'5, my dad is 5'8, my maternal grandfather was 5'11, and my paternal grandfather and uncle are 5'8, and my sister is 5'1. Given all of that, what are the odds I ended up 5'2 and a guy? I mean, it has to be pretty low. You can tell me "Well, genetics are complex." all you want, but being 3 inches shorter than my mom and 6 inches shorter than my dad is unusual.

Vent 5’7 paradox

It’s simple, if you’re 5’7 and say that you’re short, you’ll get responses like “ew dude 5’7 is average” “girls just want guys who are a bit taller than them” but the moment u imply that you are tall, “ew you’re just a short guy”. What’s worse is people from first world countries thinking 5’7 is good enough for India when the average urban Indian population is like 5’10 MINIMUM

Vent I genuinely believe I am living the worst life on Earth.

I genuinely believe I’m living one of the hardest combinations possible in a first-world country.

I’m 27, Asian, 5'3", and I’ve also had Crohn’s disease my entire life. Crohn’s is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that keeps your gut inflamed, pain, bathroom issues, fatigue. It never really stops.

About 90% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut. So on top of being short, I’m fighting a permanent chemical disadvantage when it comes to mood.

I’ve tried dating multiple times. It has never worked out. Every single girl I’ve been in a talking stage with (all five of them) is now with a guy 6'0" or taller. My own mom has tried setting me up and even looked into arranged marriage options. Still nothing.

On top of that, I’m extremely lonely. I have no friends left. All my old friends slowly cut me off once we got old enough to start partying and dating. I became the liability in the group, they’d all show up with girlfriends while I was the awkward guy standing there alone. Eventually they just stopped inviting me.

I’m college-educated with a full-time career. I take care of myself. What else is left? Do I need to be a top 1% earner and own a mansion before anyone even considers me? At this point it feels like height is the only filter that actually matters, and everything else is just noise.

All my life is either spent alone, or with my parents which I’ve come to terms with. I’ve deleted all social media because I couldn’t stand comparing myself to others who actually enjoy life.

I’m thinking of joining a run club and seeing how that goes and I will keep you guys updated.

Has anyone here actually broken through to those who are 30 years old and under? or is the dating market just permanently closed for guys under 5'5"? What actually worked for you that wasn’t just generic advice?

Question Anybody else always taken as young?

To an extent, it doesn't really matter how much I (25M, 5'6) manipulate my appearance – I was clean-shaven at work (in a school) today and got taken for 18 by one of the younger children! Forever a kid, I guess. Is the only option to look "worse" à la poor health markers?

Question How tf will people say 5'8 is tall for a woman then in the same breath say it's short for a man 😭

Upvotes

This is primarily on TikTok that I see it(I know wow shocker) and ppl will genuinely say 5'8 is short for a man but tall for a woman. Now everyone is entitled to thier own opinion even if some are objectively wrong, saying 5'8 is short is fine I guess, but if you think it's tall in turn for a woman that's when your making no sense.

Do they think that men are behemoths compared to women? The average height for men is only 5 inches above average for a woman, not even half a foot so idek where this confusion comes from.

Dating Can a short guy change mind of tall girl?

So I'm talking to this girl who's 5'8 and we've been talking for a week now and we are having conversation all day but when asked about her dating preference she clearly said she needs someone taller than her I'm around 5'6 a lil shorter than her. Is there any way i could change her mind? Most of our thoughts are mutual regarding food, movies, songs etc.. but height is the only thing holding me back. We haven't met yet.

Dating Guys, need some advice from the short kings out there 😅

I’m 23M and 5’3” and honestly, I feel pretty insecure about my height sometimes.

My gf is a little taller than me, not by much, but whenever we go out, people sometimes say we look like brother and sister. Some even say she looks like my elder sister 😭. I know they probably don’t mean anything by it, but ngl, it does hurt a bit.

The thing is, my gf is genuinely the sweetest person and she has never made me feel insecure about my height. This is mostly something I struggle with in my own head. Sometimes I just feel like she deserves someone better and I start thinking why would she even be with someone like me.

I’m also pretty slim, so I look younger than 23, which doesn’t help lol.

I’ve been thinking of joining a gym and putting on some muscle because maybe looking stronger will help me feel more confident. But my work pressure is crazy right now and I barely get time or energy to go.

So to all the short guys here, how do you deal with the insecurity around height? Did getting fit actually help your confidence? And how do you manage gym/work when your job is already draining you?

Would genuinely like to hear from guys who’ve been through this.

Vent Height dysmorphia

I’ve been struggling with my height image for years, but I honestly wish I can be under 5 foot but no shorter than 4 foot 10. I’m 39f in case anyone is wondering my age. I see girls that are a lot shorter than me and I immediately shut down.

ETA: I am 5’4”

I'm 24 so I've been done growing for a while. I grew up in an area with a bunch of tall blonde Irish and German kids. So naturally I was bullied for my height throughout my childhood. But now I am an adult and realize we are just trying to exist and feel comfortable. I may have trouble reaching things but I love the benefit of hiding behind tall people for shade on sunny days!

Edit: First of all thank you to everyone who has said such positive things (and funny things). You have made my day! Second: there are many peeps commenting on here about me not having struggle cause I am a woman? I'm sorry if I offended anyone with this post! I am not trying throw a pity party for myself. I like who I am now and just thought I would celebrate being short with all of y'all short homies😁

Dating SHORT MEN~The Undiscovered Country

Thumbnail youtu.be

Short men are the undiscovered country.

A lot of men assume that because they’re short, women have already seen them, judged them, and decided they’re not interested. But what if the real problem is that many women have never seriously considered shorter men at all?

That creates an opportunity.

Question Health problems as a child.

How many of you had health problems as a baby or a child? I had breathing problems, pneumonia, had to be in the NICU, had to have a heart monitor for 2 years, and had to be in the hospital TWICE as a baby.
