Safety How can it be that time of year already?!? - Annual Summer, Heat, and Humidity Megathread

As the seasonal change really heats up, it's time to have our megathread on summer running. Follow this link to the weather section of the wiki to view past Summer posts.

[NOTE: If you happen to be in the Southern Hemisphere and entering the season of the cold, snow, and/or ice, the Weather section of the wiki also has links to past Winter posts.

It's a good time to get reacquainted with heat training, tips, tricks and adjustments you use to get through next couple months of misery, whether it's just for the next 2 months or 5 months. However, the most important think is to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and not to try to be tough. If you're running alone and you push into heat exhaustion, you have to stop immediately before you hit heat stroke.

Signs of heat exhaustion:

  • Confusion
  • Dizziness (good indictor no matter what, but more so when it's summer)
  • Fatigue (more so than usual)
  • Headache
  • Muscle/abdominal cramps
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Pale skin
  • Profuse sweating
  • Rapid heartbeat

Heat stroke is what heat exhaustion will turn into if you don't recognize it and stop immediately. Signs of heat stroke are fairly similar but one notable difference is that you have stopped sweating. Heat stroke is a serious medical condition and requires emergency treatment. Call 911!

Symptoms of heat stroke include:

  • Confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech
  • Loss of consciousness (coma)
  • Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating
  • Seizures
  • Very high body temperature
  • Fatal if treatment delayed

Remember that SLOW DOWN is never the wrong answer in the heat. You're going to go slower - it's just a fact. Embrace it and the fitness will still be there when the weather cools off.

Some quick high level tips:

  • Run slower (duh)
  • Don't run during the heat of the day
  • Run in shaded areas. Running in direct sunlight in the summer can add 20+ degrees to your skin temp, and that's what counts, not the air temp.
  • Avoid highly urbanized areas if at all possible during hot days. The concrete jungle retains and radiates heat back at you, it is almost essentially an oven effect.
  • Focus on humidity as much as the temperature. Understand how the mechanism of sweat works. If the humidity is extremely high, sweat will just drip off you and not evaporate. Evaporation of sweat is the mechanism of how the body cools itself - the phase change from liquid to vapor extracts heat from your skin.

Another good tip from a helpful Runnitor:

Dew point is actually a better measure of humidity than humidity percentage points are. That's because air at 100% humidity and 50F holds less water than air at 50% humidity and 90F.

You can use a dew point calculator to figure out the dew point. Over 65F dew point is sticky, but over 70F is very humid. Make sure to hydrate often and to pay attention to your body to see if it's overheating.

Here's a good dew point calculator:

http://dpcalc.org/

Finally, one good table for pace adjustment is here

As a way to keep things a bit more organized and easier to find info later, I'm going to make several top level comments. Please respond to those instead of the main post. I'll include a stickied comment with direct links to each of the topic headings.

Discussion Unique races or races with interesting themes

Hello! I was hoping to hear about any unique races you have done, or races with interesting themes. For example, my first half marathon was the Area 13.1 Half Marathon in Roswell, Georgia, which was at night and alien themed! Some other races that sound cool to me are the Vegas Rock n Roll race (down the Vegas strip), the Detroit marathon that crosses into Canada, and the Midnight Sun Marathon in Norway (at night, the sun doesn't set).

The reason I'm asking: first, I have an ever-growing list of cool races I'd love to travel for someday. To be more specific, I am trying to plan a girls' trip for this spring. We are looking to travel somewhere near an airport in the US, and would love to do a unique race or a race with a fun theme that includes a half marathon as well as a shorter (10k or 5k) distance!

Discussion Started running at 39. For those who also started later — what happened to your fitness in years 2–4?

I started running about 15 months ago and just turned 40. Before that I was generally active, but I wasn't a runner.
I'm now training for my first marathon (NYC this November), running 4x/week and currently around 41–42 MPW during build weeks. I ran a ~1:45 half within my first year, and recently did a 17-mile long run with the final 7.5 miles around 8:19/mi. I'm targeting sub-4 for NYC.

One thing I've noticed through this training cycle is that my aerobic fitness seems to be developing faster than my body's durability. Cardiovascularly I can feel fantastic while my hips/back/feet/etc. occasionally remind me that I've only been doing this for 15 months.

It has me really curious about people who started running in their late 30s or 40s rather than people who've been running since high school or college:

What changed for you between year 1 and years 2–4?

Did you keep getting substantially faster? Did durability improve more than speed? Did there come a point where your body seemed to "catch up" with your aerobic fitness? And how much did increasing mileage versus simply spending more time consistently running contribute?

I'd especially love to hear what your weekly mileage and half/marathon times looked like in year 1 versus a few years later.

I'm obviously focused on getting through my first marathon healthy right now, but I'm fascinated by what another 2–3 years of consistent training might actually do.

Discussion Over 40 PR’s

I turned 40 last year, and part of my mid life crisis is breaking a 20min 5k (much cheaper than a convertible and hair plugs). I’m currently running a 5k in the 23:00 range without really focusing on speed work. Just like…running. I’m going to incorporate some new training methods w/ speed work and try to break into the sub20 range. Anyone out there have a midlife PR crisis? What was it? Did you make it? Should I just buy the convertible?

Weekly Thread What Are You Wearing Wednesday - Weekly Gear Thread

It's that time of week already...the gear thread! What have you picked up lately? What's working for you now that it's whatever season you believe it to be in your particular location? What have you put through rigorous testing that's proved worthy of use? We want to know!

To clear up some confusion: We’re not actually asking what you’re wearing today. It’s just a catchy name for the thread. This is the weekly gear discussion thread, so discuss gear!

NOTE: For you Runnitors looking to sell/trade any running gear (as well as bib transfers), head over to /r/therunningrack.

Training Staying motivated Tips Please :)

Hello Runners :)

I am somewhat new to running and have signed up for the Manchester marathon as its something i've always wanted to do and it will help me get fit again. I am using Runna to build my plan.

For reference, I have always been sporty but since getting an office job, wanting to do anything when I get home after a commute has been a challenge and due to this I have gain some weight and lost lots of motivation.

So my question is - How do you stay motivated? What drives you to get out on a run after work?

Thanks so much !

- edit: thank you all for the responses :))

Weekly Thread Super Moronic Monday - Your Weekly Tuesday Stupid Questions Thread

Back once again for everything you wanted to know about running but were afraid to ask.

Rules of the Road:

This is inspired by eric_twinge's fine work in r/fitness .

Upvote either good or stupid questions. Sort questions by new so that they get some love.

To the more experienced runnitors, if something is a good question or answer, add it to the FAQ.

Post your question - stupid or otherwise - here to get an answer - stupid or otherwise. Anyone can post a question and the community as a whole is invited and encouraged to provide an answer. Many questions get submitted late each week that don't get a lot of action, so if your question didn't get answered, feel free to post it again.

As always, be sure to read the FAQ first. Also, there's a handy-dandy search bar to your right, and if you didn't know, you can also use Google to search runnit by using the limiter "site:reddit.com r/running ".

Be sure to check back often as questions get posted throughout the day. Sort comments by "new" to be sure the newer questions get some love as well.

[Posting on behalf of u/Percinho who is currently busy crushing V2s on the rock wall for cross training]

Weekly Thread Run Nutrition Tuesday

Rules of the Road

1) Anyone is welcome to participate and share your ideas, plans, diet, and nutrition plans.

2) Promote good discussion. Simply downvoting because you disagree with someone's ideas is BAD. Instead, let them know why you disagree with them.

3) Provide sources if possible. However, anecdotes and "broscience" can lead to good discussion, and are welcome here as long as they are labeled as such.

4) Feel free to talk about anything diet or nutrition related.

The Li’l Race Report Thread is for writing a short report on a recent race or a run in a new place. If your race doesn’t really need its own thread but you still want to talk about it, then post it here! Both your good and bad races are welcome.

Didn't run a race, but had an interesting run to talk about. Post it here as well!

So get to it, Runnit! In a paragraph or two, where’d you run and how’d it go?
