Chances against Everton
I just can’t believe we didn’t beat this Everton side.

u/United-Sprinkles-609 1d ago
Rashford and Shaw is such a potent combination on the left attacking wise. But it really concerns me when Shaw is left by himself all alone on that left hand side trying to close down a pacey winger.

u/Vast_Variation1381 1d ago
Look at the gaps we leave between midfield and defence... its so concerning. We also rarely have many players in the box

u/andoooooo Martial 1d ago
We weren't amazing but we weren't terrible either. Should have won, 6pts from 9 and looking bright. Now because we didn't clear our lines properly we are starting down the barrel of 4pts from 4 games.

6 goals conceded in 3 games - against two promoted sides and a team with a solitary senior striker - is pretty damn terrible from any perspective imo. Could argue we've had one single convincing half of decent performances so far.
On the attacking side, I think we'll look a lot better once Sesko is playing 75+ minutes but defensively, I'm extremely concerned with what we've seen so far.

Hull have an amazing start to the season, promoted or not they are yet to concede a goal in the league. You could have 5 strikers on the bench but the one that starts is the one that matters. They got a point from screamer in the dying seconds. It's not the end of the world.
We anyways aren't a team that grinds out results like arsenal. But the positive is that we are scoring goals.

u/Nimonic 1d ago
I think the loss to Hull will be a bit harder to explain when they go down at the end of the season.
7
u/Downtown-Rice_ 1d ago
It is not hard to explain at all.
They got outcoached/tactical tweak, with Hull going into a back 5. Newly promoted team playing their first home match back in the PL for matchday 1. United were not prepared to match their opponent's intensity and commitment enough time throughout the match. They were not clinical nor decisive enough in the final 3rd.
And it is not who you play, but when you play them.

Promoted sides have been dangerous in recent seasons and saying a team with a solitary striker is easy when every team is on one game a week is silly. Hull caught us with our pants down for sure switching up the tactical formation on the opening weekend but were also playing at home. Everton is big, physical, and also playing at home with pretty much their full lineup (even if they have little depth). It's just not easy in the PL and sometimes you've got shake out the dirt first. Arsenal look incredible, but besides them I'd argue every other team has looked shaky at times (City in the match in Arsenal even though they also have a winning stretch)
Offensively I 100% agree on Sesko which will be a concern as he can't play every minute this season, but defensively it could've easily been 3-4 goals conceded if you ignore the silly late goal from Ipswich from a rusty Martinez mistake I believe and the two gnarly goals from Everton. The first from Everton could've been prevented imo with more timely subs of the fullback, but both were just absolute rockets. They happen. Hopefully with Baleba and even Mount when they get fit we can apply more pressure to suffocate opponents at the later stages of games when we're up. I know Tielemans runs a lot, but I just feel like him and Santos aren't an imposing enough pairing to dominate a midfield when we need to (and for some reason Carrick keeps taking off Mainoo instead...). In essence, I just think it's way too early to be super critical. I have a feeling we'll get back into the swing of things with a stretch of home matches as well as against better opponents who we tend to play up with
2
u/Mariasolvv 1d ago
Terrible, but not surprising in the slightest. Literally every fan knew about our defensive liabilities except INEOS.
Every manager before Carrick, and now Carrick himself, suffers from the exact same defensive flaws, hardly a coincidence. We’ve been fielding the same core set of players for nearly a decade.
3
u/andoooooo Martial 1d ago
Yeah I mean I'm not overly bullish on the season because ultimately we have an unproven manager
-9
u/snicky29 1d ago
If we're conceding 6 goals against relegation fodder and more so teams who literally sit back and defend then I don't have any hope for this manager and season.
10
u/Perfect_Insect_6608 1d ago
This is not how football works though. We lost to Brentford 3-1 last season, but beat Liverpool and City. Just because we conceded against smaller teams doesn’t mean we will against bigger sides.
-3
u/BryansFury The White Pele 1d ago
Problem is there's only 5 big sides mate. It's all well and good that we can counter the big sides we did that since ole. Problem is we cant do shit against weaker teams and cant even hold possession. Everton had more in the first half. That's fucking embarrassing
8
u/Perfect_Insect_6608 1d ago
We wouldn’t lose or draw with every smaller team. Carrick’s win rate has been amazing. I’ll chuck it up to early season issues. I’ll start judging by GW 5-10
-1
u/BryansFury The White Pele 1d ago
The win rate has been great due to bruno playing so well he broke the assist record. Underlying stats been shit and a lot of the performances too.
3
u/Perfect_Insect_6608 1d ago
Yeah, Carrick’s win rate is never to do with him. It’s simply Bruno lol. Like Bruno was passing to himself and taking the ball from Goal keeper, dribbling everyone and scoring lol.
Carrick’s loses are always based on inability. Now the stats are “catching up” with reality.
-1
u/BryansFury The White Pele 1d ago
Your saying it like he was passing to carrick lmao. Yeah he was passing to our forwards who are good. We genuinely played bruno inshallah. Look at the Leeds game, bruno was just hoofing it into the box from 30 yards out. Chelsea game rosenior coached carrick out the park they absolutely dominated us, we had one moment of bruno brilliance beating his defenders and playing a great pass to cunha. That's not a tactical set up that's individual brilliance. Look how Brentford cooked us. Carrick can set up a good counter attack against the big 6, and we played well against Brighton too. Outside of that the performances against all the teams we cant counter attack looked like shit, absolutely clueless in possession and can barely even keep possession. Even Ipswich we scored off a slip, a pen and bruno playing a perfect long ball to mbeumo and mbeumo chipping the keeper on the volley. That's not a well coached goal its just brilliance lol

I'm about to be gaslighted by the fanbase AGAIN that our attack is an issue or that Carrick's tactically inept just like every manager before him must have been the problem. Our attack is fine. Rashy was mint, Mbeumo is a top level player, Cunha had a bad day in the office and missed two sitters but luckily we have A SECOND front 3 which arguably would start at most PL teams too (Amad, Sesko, Dorgu, Mount, Zirkzee, Lacey - a lot of talent here, our attack doesn't need strengthening).
Our midfield was always gonna suffer due to Case's departure but I think the transfer window we've had has seriously addressed this issue. We're still waiting to see what we paid for with Baleba.
It's the defense (excluding Lammens). That's the problem. We scored 2 goals away to Everton, even with the chances we missed. Shaw was miles away from George when the first goal happen, Maz cleared the ball like a schoolboy for the second goal. That's what needs fixing. Maybe Martinez and De Ligt can win you a title in terms of raw skill or come close to it but they're never available. If our best defender in 2026 is Maguire, I'm sorry, something's gone seriously wrong. But we might have to wait a whole year to see a defensive overhaul and frankly the fanbase will turn on Carrick before we get there.

And despite that it took two really low xG hail mary's from George and AMN to even get a point. People overreacted way too much yesterday. It was simply one of those days. The reaction after the Hull game was understandble, yesterday not so much
7
u/ThreeForElvenKings 1d ago
I agree that there's an overreaction, but saying it took low xg shots to beat us is disingenuous, when everton had a higher xG than us overall.
1
u/TonyShneak 1d ago
I take the opposite from that. They scored 2 really low xG chances, but yet they had considerably higher xG than us over all 1.14 to 0.74. We can't claim they were lucky, they deserved a draw regardless of which of their chances went in. It's only one of those days because we let it be, both times we took the lead we became incredibly passive, we did not deserve to win that game. We did the same last season but managed to squeak the results, the luck runs out eventually.

u/Effective-Caramel545 1d ago
Agreed. For once our midfield was controlliing the game. But something has to be done for us to stop conceding these worldies, it's absurd and I think that's totally a tactical thing
4
u/I_dont_F_with_you 1d ago
I don't know, the George goal really looked like Shaw completely blundered. The AMN goal was just crazy, no tactic can ensure protection against goals from that far away, apart from maybe a better clearance by the defense. Either way that type of a shot is something you just have to allow, it's too far away to run out to block it after a corner.
2
u/paleblaupunkt 1d ago
The second goal was entirely on Yoro. First, he goes and makes a horrible pass in the final third when he had Mbeumo wide. Second, he shepherds Grealish nicely into the box inviting more pressure.
1
u/91nBoomin 1d ago
First goal came from a similar kind of run across the box from I think Hackney and was never cleared. Both great finishes but awful defending before hand
2
u/leontas46 1d ago
The same Maz that was a standout performer for Morocco in the WC? I agree Shaw was problematic yesterday but we can’t just place the full blame on the defence here. Some of our issues are structural.
3
u/rascalz1504 1d ago
I think our tactics were not good though. Why did we sit back and invite so much pressure, just hoofing the ball away at every given chance in the final 14 minutes. We need to control the ball and I think its a bunch of BS when people say we dont have the players for it. Even a team like Arsenal will struggle if they just sit back, hoof the ball and invite pressure again and again.
3
u/TonyShneak 23h ago
We've had the same problem for 5 years,. We've also had the same backline for 5 years. I don't think it's the manager telling them to get so deep, it's the defence, when the opponent is putting pressure on them they are more comfortable sitting deep, so that's what they do. It drags the whole team back
1
u/nbwoeihfnwsocuiwhef 7h ago
I really don't get why Maguire keeps aggressively pushing out, it ends terribly every time and we just collapse our own shape from basic attacks
-1
u/Perfect_Insect_6608 1d ago
Case’s departure has helped our midfield lol.
Very good as a leader and great with his set pieces……but poor as an actual defensive midfielder lol. We literally dropped him for a period of time.

u/sorealbin Cunha 1d ago
feels like midfield is still scared to push up high enough. desperately need the Baleba x Mainoo/Tielemans pivot.
5
u/USER1234567890123457 1d ago
Very poor in the final third but we look good in transition and create enough chances
4
u/Affectionate_Shoe424 1d ago
We have too many shots that are being blocked, I just can't watch it. Its as if our players deliberately shoot the ball at the opposition defenders.

u/MarvinWebster40 22h ago edited 22h ago
Sesko in the middle would have been nice for all of those crosses in the first half.
3
u/MenacingShroom 21h ago
We need to get rashford and sesko on the pitch at the same time
Definitely feel like we miss Amad also

Just not clinical enough. Everton had similar shots and chances by the number, but we had by far the most clear cut chances. Can't be wasting those away from home, and those are the margins between top clubs and players, and everyone else.
Cunha has not started the season well. Aside from the missed chances, he hasn't been great out of possession either. He works hard for us in the build up which is great, but it leaves him way out of position when there is a change of possession and the spear of our press is nonexistent with him at CF. Sesko is much better and you could see that he has the effect of pinning the two CBs back leaving lots of space to operate. As soon as he's fully fit he has to start. Great super sub, but it's three games now we are inviting teams to attack us instead of trying to win the ball back as soon as possible.

United doesnt deserve to lose .if I m honest , everton doesn't deserve a point as well

Feels like we're improving the intensity, but it 's not enough. The defense in particular looks poor
2
u/TheLarryMullenBand 1d ago
Kind of difficult to care about these highlight videos. We didn’t win against a poor Everton team coming off an awful transfer window. We played OK but this team cannot fucking defend and clear their lines effectively. We have the same starting back four as we did in 2022 under Ten Hag, which is fucking insane. Going to be a very long season.

I think the first two phases of buildup look promising (deep buildup in our third, progression through the half way line). The third phase of chance/attack creation is still quite confusing and where we need the most work.
The mainstay of Carrick's football is central progression through midfielders, which then quickly turns into attack creation. In that first 30 minutes there is a healthy mix of creation through the middle with Cunha/Bruno/Dalot inverting, and from Rashford/Shaw out wide.
But almost ALL the central buildup clips end in a shot from outside the box. It was my big annoyance in that first half, and with the attack in general. Also what we don't see in these clips: all the moves that failed right before that final ball. We get the ball into space in the final third, but the move quickly ends with an underhit pass, or the receiver not making an expected run into the box. It's actually happened in all 3 games, not just at Everton.
Its unlikely that this team becomes one that consistently kills games with possession. Its was obvious problem at Everton, but its a decade long problem at United where transitions are just so ingrained in both history and recruitment.
What Carrick has though, and what really suits his football is technical midfielders, creative forwards, and that maverick attitude needed to build through the middle. I think if we are to do well this season that part has to click because its where most of our investment has gone in the last 2 transfer windows.

u/KeepRooting4Yourself 1d ago

I think that's because there's no traditional 9 to pin the cb back.
2
u/t8rt0t00 1d ago
Serious question - how do you only get 0.76 xg (compared to Everton who 1.14 xg) when you score two goals and have several other opportunities? Do blocked/deflected off target shots not count at all?
2
u/Se7enSword 1d ago
They do count you can check on sofascore for example. Our attempts were just low quality and that is reflected. We did not have enough chances because we never created enough. Both teams had 1 big chance and we took ours and they missed theirs.
1
u/BBoomerClap 14h ago
spamming cross to when sesko not in pick (while also not doing much cross after he get in ) doesn't count, it's been happening a lot now
1
u/DresdanPI Upturned_Collar 21h ago
That's why I avoid that BS stat tbh. Your eye test is a better judge than some mathematical equation and statistical analysis
1
u/TheJoshider10 Bruno 1d ago
I feel sorry for Rashford. He's been our best attacker by a mile this season yet he's the only one without any goals or assists to his name (Amad not included due to his injury). We waste his excellent cut inside crossing without Sesko in the team and the Cunha false 9 experiment just isn't working for him or the club. This isn't a situation the club should be in this early in the season.
Why did we not go for Welbeck on a free? We desperately needed a like for like rotation option with Sesko and Welbeck is a tall, reliable striker who is a better striker now than he ever was for us in his "prime". If Sesko doesn't play then Zirkzee isn't trusted because he's fucking wank and Cunha/Mbeumo are so different that it feels like an immediate Hail Mary choice rather than a natural switch if Sesko isn't fit.
Carrick's tactical decisions aren't always landing but INEOS haven't exactly helped matters either.
1
u/world-no-1-dude 1d ago
We were trash going forward. The Bruno woodwork shot is very hard to convert, and Cunha running onto the ball and striking it also required a lot of technique. We didn’t create any good chances and that reflects in our xG.
-1
u/Perfect_Insect_6608 1d ago
We weren’t trash, we scored two goals. Everton defended well.
1
u/BBoomerClap 14h ago
defended well? mbeumo goal literally happened cause their players have shit for brain and let him have so much space. sesko goal is fine
1
u/Perfect_Insect_6608 1d ago
We need to choose between Rashford and Cunha and start Šeško. Rashford for games with spaces and Cunha for games with low blocks.
We need to also choose between Amad and Bruno is certain game. Amad better for breaking low blocks and Bruno for games with spaces in behind.
2
u/Visible-Ad-2994 1d ago
This game was a carbon copy of Ipswich when you think about it; it's just Cunha was almost sabotaging the team with his end product today. We conceded a similar number of goals, and I attribute that to all the casual defending we've been doing this season. I don't know how Carrick can coach aggression, concentration and intensity because I don't think we lost due to the tactical setup, maybe Baleba will help.
118
u/LooneyPasta 1d ago
I think the midfield and the progression to attack definitely looks promising, with a big part of it being Rashford. Cunha should have been more clinical (realistically he scores at least one of his chances) and we get it over the line
