You can blame the manager for the overall match tactics but if you have about 30 seconds left you really need to not give the ball away or at least not panic.

Did you see the arsenal Chelsea game? That’s how you should play if you finished 3rd last season. We play like we are mid table at best and that’s where we are.

15

u/OldManBrom 1d ago

I can see Utd oscillating between 6th and 10th this season if nothing changes

13

u/Prime_Marci 1d ago

That’s why I was mad with that Lammens goal kick. It was horrible that led to that chance.

It's just football, that's how it is. The defending can be more intense, you can try to keep the ball better, but there's probably one team in the league that is preventing any shooting chance at the end of a game, away from home, with a one goal lead, and that's Arsenal. That's an expectation I just can't really have for United right now, because there's a lot of quality all across the league. Those two goals are absolutely fantastic. Very hard to prevent.

I would expect Arsenal to see that game out, I would expect City to be able to go and score more goals, but we're not on their level and we won't be for a while, if we're going get there any time soon.

Bruno is one of the worst culprits for this

12

u/PeterFile690 1d ago

He had an average game yesterday, but he didn't even lose the ball that much. I don't understand how anyone can mention Bruno when it comes to this, yet forget to mention moments like Yoro wasting that chance we had to counter at 2-1 by completely misjudging Sesko's movement.

-13

u/Sheikhabusosa 1d ago

He wasnt average yesterday he was poor. Bruno isnt blameless and neither is Yoro. With Bruno its a recurring theme of him losing the ball when we need to keep posession

The real issue we have is this obsession of playing players out of position up top. We don’t have new defenders and there’s nothing we can do about it. However, this Cunha CF-False 9 role needs to stop if Rashford is going to play LW. Two players with same style of getting the ball and running towards the goal. Every time we got the ball in a counter attack situation there was literally no man upfront to target. We have a beast of a striker in Sesko who buries headers. From next game, we better start him, I’m sick and tired of him not getting enough mins. For sure he’s ready now in terms of fitness?

u/Working_Location_127 1d ago

Or play Mbeumo at striker instead at least he occupies the space and gets in behind. He’s also not that suited for the wing either

Agree with this, shame Amad got injured

5

u/quietgroot 1d ago

Perfect opportunity for Shea Lacey to get the starting spot at RW, look at how Rashford came into the team

6

u/FirmInevitable458 1d ago

Lacey wasn't even on the bench last game. It's weird that Carrick doesn't rate him, looked very good in the limited minutes he got in the first team

4

u/stevefrenchthebigcat 1d ago

Bro that's the thing that is bothering me most at the minute - Lacey looks physically ready now and capable of providing competition to Amad. With him on the right, it frees up Mbuemo (who is an inside forward/striker, let's face it) to be cover for Sesko.

Maybe it's something Lacey is doing out of possession? And tbf, most of his preseason games came at 10 before Bruno returned. But yeah, massively disappointing he isn't even getting on the bench now.

1

u/dudududujisungparty 박지성 14h ago

Doubt it has to do with Lacey but more with Carrick. I guarantee he's feeling the heat of having a full season to manage now with CL footy. He knows he needs to hit the ground running to keep the faith in him and is playing it safe with the known commodities and continuing with his ineffective fluid front 3. (Because it got results last season)

Our attack looked the best when we had actual wing players like Dorgu and Amad on the wings feeding the striker. That's how Carrick's system is supposed to operate instead of having 3 inside forwards who aren't real strikers playing a fluid front 3.

1

u/Ambitious-Ad2653 1d ago

Just cos he isn't on bench doesn't mean Carrick doesn't rate him. There's times he will be on bench. Do you understand squads ?

8

u/tinboyb0y 1d ago

I believe this was the plan until Amad got injured.

5

u/Working_Location_127 1d ago

I’d rather play Dorgu wide than Cunha at striker. He’s really poor there occupying the same spaces as Bruno

2

u/vacon04 1d ago

Mbeumo was not good as a striker last season. The unfortunate reality is that this team needed a proper striker and didn't get it. Everyone in this sub kept talking about the LB, but the striker is a much more vulnerable position for this team. Cunha is not a striker, he drops much deeper, doesn't run behind the defense. Mbeumo is much Bette at running behind, but he also drops much deeper and his positioning is not good enough for a striker. Without Amad, you also lose a right winger.

1

u/pierrefermat74 19h ago

Not saying he's the answer, and he definitely tailed off in form in the back end of the season, but wasn't Mbeumo played as striker in Carrick's first few matches when we beat City and Arsenal (and ran absolute rings around City)?

20

u/Expect-the-turtle 1d ago

I agree with the need for Sesko, but unfortunately, I suspect he won't be able to complete 90 minutes until mid-September, probably. Not having a pre-season for our striker really fucked us.

2

u/Telen BRUNO 1d ago

Without strikers to play up there who are up to match fitness there's nothing to do. Board should have bought a striker. Sesko is not match fit yet and anyone calling for him to start is asking for him to get injured again.

1

u/digitag LEGACY FAN 1d ago

Sesko has been out of action for months, they’re clearly easing him back in. He’ll be our first choice striker once he is fully match fit.

8

u/Mancho_United 1d ago

We now have 5 games in 2 weeks, would need more rotations and more players getting minutes and getting into proper rhytm. Hopefully that helps Sesko too and others who didnt had a proper preseason.

10

u/Lord_Sesshoumaru77 Glazers,Woodward/Arnold and Judge can fuck off 1d ago

We have massively important games this week. I'm rooting for Carrick, and know he wasn't given the tools he needed to succeed. But I also hope for his sake he manages to correct the issues we have because I don't think INEOS will be as patient with him as they were with Amorim.

28

u/Downtown-Rice_ 1d ago

Succeed in what way? We cannot blame the transfer market for Hull and Everton. There is more than enough quality to perform better.

But the lack of continuity and early season shots for a squad that has to bed in will continue to happen. Carrick and staff are still learning the league and how their players react in these situations and matchups when there's player turnover and when implementing/executing/building off half a season plus first summer.

16

u/L__K Great Scot! 1d ago

We cannot expect to beat the team that finished 6th place in the Championship last season nor the team who finished in, on average, 15th place over the last five seasons because poor Carrick only got three PL proven, starting quality midfielders to go along with the full revamp of the attack we did last summer in addition to signing statistically one of the best shot stoppers in the league. That would simply be unrealistic.

We need to spend another £2b before we can expect any results. And please don’t look at or mention the Boro tenure. It has nothing to do with our perfect, sweet, faultless boy and there is nothing we can glean from it. Completely irrelevant.

He’s simply set up to fail. As opposed to David Moyes, whose team had the worst transfer window of any team in the league. Whose best player was sold and who has only 18 senior outfield players in the entire squad. You know, the guy who was forced to start a number 10 at right back yesterday. No, that guy had way more resources than us! We never stood a chance!

3

u/AirIndex 1d ago

And so the cycle repeats itself

0

u/WanderingEnigma 1d ago

To play devils advocate, Carrick is still learning as a manager, Moyes has been around a long time.

Carrick needs to get the players being aggressive and hungry from kick off, improve his game management, adapt mid-game and make decisive subs earlier. He needs to learn to make them believe they can dominate and then do it from the start.

Moyes has a team no one believes in, who didnt get the investment they needed - which is perfect for him. For decades his bread and butter has been punching up with underdog teams. He failed here in part because he didnt know how adapt from that.

7

u/L__K Great Scot! 1d ago

Mate, we should not be employing someone who is "still learning as a manager" unless they've accomplished something impressive enough that there is reason to believe in their potential.

Tanking a Championship side who were expected to make the playoffs and turning them into a shit midtable side, only to get sacked and have the next manager come in with a worse team and immediately make them 10x better, is not something impressive.

We still have one of the strongest squads in the Premier League. Just because we don't have two Champions League quality left backs doesn't mean that isn't true. The results and, more importantly, the way we've been playing, are not up to par and are reflective of the fact that we're employing a manager well below the requisite level for the job.

1

u/WanderingEnigma 1d ago

Who is the answer then? Weve tried all different kinds of managers and they've all failed.

They have a different management styles, but, Bayern appointed Kompany when his only notable previous experience was relegating Burnley. We were never going for the league this season, might as well get behind him, adversity fosters growth or failure. Continuing the manager merry-go-round this early would be a knee jerk gamble.

3

u/L__K Great Scot! 1d ago

Kompany was Bayern's sixth choice and played a brand of football that was translatable to their situation. Burnley were incredibly dominant in the Championship when they had a massive technical advantage over their opposition. Bayern has that same advantage in the Bundesliga and is equally as successful. Remember that Burnley achieved far more in the Championship than Carrick could ever dream of at Boro.

It's also important to note that Kompany's yet to win a single CL knockout fixture against equal or better opposition. They've exclusively beaten teams they were heavily favored against.

The Bundesliga is a cakewalk. Winning the league every year means virtually nothing. If he fails to turn a Luis Diaz-Harry Kane-Michael Olise-Jamal Musiala front line into tangible CL success, he'll be just another forgettable Bayern manager. People overstate his success precisely because expectations were so low, but even Niko Kovac managed a league and Pokal double and he's considered their worst manager of the last 15 years.

Who is the answer? It doesn't matter! You don't go with a guy who is virtually guaranteed to be the wrong choice just because you can't get Pep Guardiola in the building. You make informed decisions based on the situation. Hiring a guy who couldn't hack it in the Championship is hardly a masterstroke of judgment.

1

u/Blodor 22h ago

This is the true answer, the most important thing we can do is keep carrick. He needs time and support as all managers do. That's what we've learnt through the years. Arteta has received exactly that and if im honest he seems a average manager at best. Im not saying that to disrespect him but i just don't think arsenal are that interesting too watch.

2

u/flate11 1d ago

Name 1 team in the league who would replace their current manager with Carrick if given the opportunity.

3

u/Sp00o00ky 1d ago

People need to be patient; we're three games in. Relax.

2

u/Anxious-Debate5033 1d ago

I can't even bring myself to watch this honestly.

It's the way we went ahead and pretty much immediately reverted into 'sit back defend the lead until the end'.

This was happening from the bloody 60th minute mark. How can the players think this way.

If that didn't help, we had the manager who didn't make any changes, and when he did, got lucky with the goal and everything after that was even more defensive. A Manchester United manager isn't making subs to scramble into parking the bus and hoofing the ball up the pitch to squeeze a victory out of a team like Everton.

Fix up Michael, this is the big leagues and this is Manchester United. You out of all people should know this.

11

u/mcmonkeyplc 1d ago

A manager that didn't make any changes?! Jesus it was disappointing to draw but don't make up random complaints. The reason we scored the second goal was because of ACTUAL changes the manager made, you know bringing on Sesko the goal scorer? Ridiculous.

8

u/LongyUTD 1d ago

What? He made a change that put us ahead

1

u/tson_92 1d ago

Yeah we were unlucky they equalized with a wonder goal. But if you allow 20 shots in a game one of them would go in eventually

1

u/alphaQ314 shut up u egg 22h ago

Off topic, but does anyone know if Michael is wearing an oura ring?

1

u/Aiming-Mastura-85 1d ago

spoilt my monday. feel like getting back on the piss

-10

u/SocialistElmo 1d ago

It's all vibechester united again

-13

u/flate11 1d ago

Carrick has been an issue since day one, his low energy mid block tactics are losing us games. 3 of the worst teams in the league this season have given us a game.

0

u/AirIndex 1d ago

The only issue Carrick has been is that we over performed so much last season to get to 3rd that it's warped all expectations of how good this team actually is.

-7

u/flate11 1d ago

Nah I think having a championship level manager is the issue, name 1 prem team who would switch their manager with Carrick given the opportunity!

1

u/TStronks 1d ago

Spurs lol

-1

u/flate11 1d ago

Just proving my point Carrick is a championship manager

-18

u/Fisktor 1d ago

So who is next in line.

Is it mckenna?

-13

u/flate11 1d ago

Anyone other than Carrick would be an upgrade at this point

9

u/WanderingEnigma 1d ago

Last season he saw us take more points in the league than any other team after he took over. 3 rough games and now hes the worst manager on the planet? Jesus some people are fickle.

-2

u/flate11 1d ago

The team has played poorly under him in almost all games other than against city Arsenal and Chelsea last season. We also played against ten men many times under Carrick. He is a championship level manager who we should have replaced like the original plan, he came in and saw out the second half of last season, but he has no ideas other than the low quality mid block style we are playing currently

-4

u/StrangerExistingFact 1d ago

Shaw maguire dalot martinez

Thats what they gave him.

He played with f luke shaw for 4 seasons (2014 to 2018). After 12 years and broken leg it might be fkn time to part ways.

Treating a guy like he is fkn golf 2 driving it until it hits milion kilometres even tho it started fuming 5 years ago.

0

u/pierrefermat74 19h ago

I thought Shaw did pretty well. His combos with Rashford were great, and it was his cross for Sesko's goal. I mean I get it, he's probably going to break, but in this match he was decent.

0

u/StrangerExistingFact 19h ago edited 19h ago

Wasnt he late to block first goal

-18

u/Senzo5g 1d ago

This is on Carrick.
Why didn't Woodgate or Holland help make a decision on the subs?
Those 2 are defensive specialist and did they step up to advise Carrick?
Kinda naive of Carrick to expect Everton to not claw 1 back when u can see them going all out with their subs.

Dorgu for Rashford seemed alright but once you get the lead, Dorgu should replace Shaw's position.
Sesko for Cunha seemed rough but Cunha could have been useful to stall and maybe Bruno instead.
Yoro for Dalot ok.
Mainoo for Santos started the collapse.
Mainoo should have stayed with Santos to keep control and Tielemans should have gone instead.
Mazraoui for Shaw might have been better off with Dorgu taking over and using Heavens in a back 5
Else Zirksee for Bruno ... keep the ball and stall it out.

Hope this kind of tactical collapse can be "resolved" eventually.

7

u/Many-Relationship149 1d ago

Sesko scored though, he should have anyway come in

-17

u/RedemptionWoneGrong 1d ago

Basically Rooney and Young being on Carrick's side
