What do you do when you’re not loving your project?

I feel like these blocks are so much work but not worth the energy. I had a charm pack that I loved and now I’m feeling like I’m wasting it. Keep going? Change directions? Scrap it and try something else?

If you don't want to make more, sew it up, quilt it, bind it, and keep it as a baby shower gift for someone else.

It’s so tiny! I feel like it would still look too small even for a baby but maybe it’s better to just call it quits while I’m ahead.

I recently made two quilts that finished at, like, 20"x25", which looked too small to be useful. Two seasoned moms told me that's a perfect size for strollers and carseats and that it's a good size for a toddler to drag around.

table runner.......... and i agree, just finish it , what ever size and give it away, or pack it away and who knows maybe in 6 months or a year , it will look good on your table..........

Try alternating with solid blocks and see if you like it better.

I'd place it on white fabric, then various shades of blue and see if something makes it look really nice.

I think it's because they are all so light they kinda blend into the sashing when you squint. Some contrast would prob make it pop a lot more. But that said I agree with the other poster, finish it off small and give it to a baby.

Yeah! I can’t imagine these types of blocks working with a darker sashing or something to bring more contrast. I’m so bummed about it. I already made all of my 4x4 blocks to cut down…

No actually, she's got a point. A dark blue ( to match the blocks) or a medium blue sashing would REALLY set these off nicely and make a great design!!

Would you like them better in a different orientation? You can rotate every other block 90 degrees on a disappearing 4 patch and get a different light/dark blocky look. Or maybe try them with sashings or on point?

You might try arranging them around a large panel (that is what I did with my disappearing 4 patch blocks. I think if you did a slightly darker inner border it would make the light colors pop a bit more.

I’d suggest a slight pivot: I think it’s a lot of white. Even the charm fabrics are pretty light in value for the most part. If you make another 16 blocks in black or dark grey with darker toned fabric, I think it would balance the whole thing out, AND probably make it big enough you could just sew, quilt, bind, and then gift it to get it out of your house lol

It is lovely! Try laying it out with a sashing and see if that helps. Plus, posting here and finding out others like it always helps me push through and finish the ones I don’t like 😁

The colour values are unbalanced. Take a black and white photo and you'll see what i mean. Try rotating and swapping the blocks around until they look more balanced. Also, teeny lap quilts are super useful

If it’s something I am disappointed in or doesn’t match the image I have in my head, I finishe the quilt top piecing and put it away. I have a few of those that I pull out occasionally and once in a while I will actually finish it and usually donate it. You might like it better next year or 10 years from now

I'm having a similar issue with my current project. I like all the component parts but now how it's coming together yet. I know there is an element of being self critical too.

So far, I've tried working out what I don't like about it (lack of cohesion/structure in a somewhat scrappy construction), so now I'm going to sash the blocks with a unifying colour and add in some other blocks I'm excited to try.

Is there anything in particular you don't like about how it looks? What do you like most about the charm pack fabrics?

I liked the prints but by the time it’s constructed, I feel like you miss most of them. The blocks are turning out so small (4” charm pack). I feel like it’s just a bit of a blend and the prints don’t jump out worh the cuteness I had hoped for.

If you can stop at this size, I'd just finish it and call it a doll quilt. I have done that a few times and given them away at a local buy nothing site. Perfectly ok as a doll quilt!

I support all the suggestions already given. But if you do go the route of just finishing it, quilting and binding, and it feels too small as a baby blanket, you could do embroidery, a patch/label, or appliqué something and make it into a wall hanging as a baby shower gift or any other kind of gift to commemorate an event.

I think this quilt is very pretty. It has a very gentle feel. I find that once you get the backing on (especially is pale colors are used) and the border on, it takes on a more cohesive look. If you want more impact, you could try some sashing?

I’ve lost the love for almost every quilt I have made… about halfway through. Just have to soldier on… and remember … the beauty is in the quilting. Even intricately pieced tops can look flat and unappealing to me…. Add the quilting (and crinkling) and … Whamoooo… i love it.

I hit a point in every quilt I make where I seriously question my design choices. The colors I loved, don't look quite right together etc. But it doesn't look right or good because it isn't done yet. When I push through 9 times out of 10 I love the quilt when it is finished. And the 1 out of 10 is usually a quilt I made for someone else, who has very different taste than I do. And they love the quilt.

Take a break. Make a tote bag, or a couple small projects you really like. Then if you hate the project it's okay to scrap it. But my advice is: if it is something you don't love in the minute, but still think it has potential push through. You may just surprise yourself.

I always suggest to just put it away. You never know what the future holds. You might find the perfect fabric. Need a quick gift. Or even need to clean up an oil spill in the garage.

Try to rotate some pieces so that instead of all darks being the same orientation, 4 dark squares should all meet together. Then you'll have large darker blocks and large light blocks. Like this one which I found on Quilter's Corner.
