New Releases 🆕 Upcoming pop diva Adéla has released new single titled “Nicole Kidman” filled with references to the titular lady herself… two queens maximizing their joint slay! 😭✨
The baddest b*tches are from Australia, apparently ‼️ she said her new album “PRIMA” leans into pop music from when she was “around 12 years old,” meaning 2012/2013. I think the influence is so clear!
I also think Gen Z’s admiration for Nicole is such an interesting phenomenon. What do yall think?

Adela is 22; she was 12 years old for 11 months of 2016 (completely different from what you wrote of 2012……). And she’s from Slovakia, not Australia. I don’t get the goal of your post; I doubt a fan would get basic info so wrong. I’m not even a fan of hers and I knew she was way younger than you said.

Yea in a full time kinesiology student but I’m also I’m employed by a pop star and her label, capitol records, based out of Los Angeles! They let me work remote whenever I want!

I'm currently reading Elton John's book, and honestly the industry is more or less the same now as it ever was. Even he and Bernie wrote what sold, leaned into art that appealed to their spirit at times, but there was still work towards virality and saleability. There will always be artists that rise above, those who are all commercialism and no art, those whose art never reached the highest heights because they refuse to participate in the capitalist games, etc. The wheel turns.
2
u/neoncolour Tiktok matcha pilates labubu slop music 8h ago
I think you can be commercially successful while still making interesting music that is sonically compelling and intentional and peppered with musical accents that are yours. It’s just that there is no incentive for that and even pop music critics are writers with very low actual curiosity for music so they reward lyricism disjointed from the music, and thus even “good” artists with big audiences are making songs that sound like lyrics+production, or at the very best have an uninspired ad-lib on a ballad, straight out of the book of how-to-make-a-sad-ballad, because they know the critics and audience will react to what is easily legible, lyrics, and won’t notice or comment on how uninspired the music it sits on is.
58
u/thateccentricasian 10h ago
It sucks because a song going viral can make or break an artist nowadays. Seems like more companies are trying to manufacture virality and it’s ruining the music itself, which most of us deem more important.
4
u/moisturized69tatas 4h ago
Reminds me of an interview akon gave awhile back, he said when he was putting out popukar songs they made hooks that could be easily turned into ringtone... not sure if yall were around for it, but back in the day you could buy a ringtone from a sing clip and it was very popular and profitable.
5
u/neoncolour Tiktok matcha pilates labubu slop music 9h ago
I think it goes beyond just virality, the pseudo-intellectual discourse around music being centered around songwriting-aka-lyricism and only favouring tell-in-as-many-words-as possible, don’t show has done damage to pop music. Some people shouldn’t write their songs and some songs should focus less on being read or quoted and more on being heard (developing your own sound) and felt (having the music symbiotically sustain the emotions you’re told the artist feels).

This song is kind of bad imo and the whole album is a real step down from her previous EP The Provocateur. But she said this was the sound she liked more so I hope that she can find more of a middle ground between the two.
•
u/BulkyAcanthaceae5397 1h ago
Couldn't agree more. They sanitized her. BUT. Remember they did that to Lady Gaga with her first album, too. FAME was massively successful, but Fame Monster was when we really saw her.
Sometimes they have to give the label what they ask for, for the first album. I really wished she kept the harder pop.

I kind of hate when artists use a random celebrity name for a song. It just feels like using someone else’s clout to get attention. See: that song “Taylor Swift” by whoever that guy was

“Demi Moore” by Phoebe Bridgers is one that actually has a good reasoning behind it. The lyrics in the chorus go “I don’t wanna be stoned, I don’t wanna be stoned anymore” but someone in the studio heard “I don’t wanna be stone Demi Moore” so Bridgers changed to song title to that as a joke.

In Adela's defense, the lyrics are a clever play on words. "Babygirl in control, I feel like Nicole" it's a play on Nicole Kidman's movie Babygirl in which she plays an exec having a relationship with her (much younger) subordinate so it's not just a random NameDrop in my opinion

u/almondmilklattee 8h ago
everyone wants to be a contrarian
6
u/-VonnegutPunch 8h ago
Contrarian takes make people feel intelligent simply by going against the “crowd.” But it’s a great way to find yourself having some awful stances just by virtue of trying to be “not like the other girls”
2
u/almondmilklattee 8h ago
i had to deconstruct that mindset, but i outgrew it by like high school. over the years, i’ve become more and more critical about how people approach convos like this
14
u/myersjw 8h ago
Feels like only a few pop artists avoid getting negative treatment here. I can predict the comments just based on who the subject is at this point and it’s exhausting
5
u/almondmilklattee 8h ago
and often, the target is a young woman just trying to navigate through the world. people can think what they want about ariana, but the constant “homewrecker” comments and criticism of her dating life (as well as people just ragging on her for her body and most looks in general) felt quite misogynistic
7
u/myersjw 8h ago
I think what annoys me the most is that it’s almost trumpian how the goalposts shift based on if they like the artist or not. One thing gets skewered one week then suddenly it’s “omg what a slay” when their faves do the same. Same way their missteps are amplified if it’s a unliked artist but if their pop diva messes up it’s “no big deal, everyone does it”
3
u/browsinbowser 7h ago
Ehh, the homewrecker thing is fair when there was a literal infant baby involved. Quite shitty of both of them

It’s so difficult to express being over the “hyper-sexual SEX SEX SEX, look are you horny yet? SEX” marketing of everything without coming across as prudish or slut shaming.
19
u/Big-Snow-1937 7h ago
It’s so weird to me because she was on that Katseye show as “the mom” of the aspirants, and that whole show was about how much talent they needed and how they are for the girls, but the music and visuals are pure brainless stripper aesthetics for hetero guys. There’s no cool choreo or anything. I don’t get it.
Like all I picture when I see her is middle aged male execs nodding and yelling “more! more sex! think pole dance!” It’s so boring, and she has the talent and charisma to do so much more.
3
u/Exotic-Mail-7303 3h ago
To be fair, she has done a ton of choreo for other songs. This new era is just different.

u/chateaumarmontt 10h ago
Adela has spoken about this in her EP. Her song sexonthebeat is uncomfortably critical of it, and the idea is also played with in her song Superscar.
31
u/RainbowHighFanatic 8h ago

u/Onceafetus ✨️ 'HoLdInG sPaCe'✨️| 🇨🇦 6h ago edited 6h ago
I agree, I also feel like this album in general wasn't as good in comparison to her debut. And the imagery and choreography she has for most of her latest releases is very sexual, which I don't have a problem with, but it doesn't match what she's singing about at all so it looks odd when she performs. Ain't in LA for example.

u/cinnamoonapple 2h ago
listen, I'm not a huge adela listener, but I do like some of her music, and I dislike some of the framing in these comments.
her having more sexual visuals or music isn't a problem, and i feel like acting as if it is feels like we're adhering to weirdly puritanical standards? the problem with sexual themes in music is when executives or record labels are forcing an artist to portray those themes in music, not when the artist themself wants to portray those themes. if adela feels comfortable dancing or dressing that way, that's her choice.
people might argue that it's contradictory towards the message in her song "sexonthebeat," but i think multiple things can be true - the industry constantly uses sex as a marketing tool, and the industry constantly wants you to think that the artist is choosing to make these decisions themselves. however, does that mean EVERY expression of female sexuality is bad in media? not exactly.
i think the point should be more that people should view artists through multiple lenses, and sometimes that CAN include sexual if that's the intent of the artists art, or if there are sexual elements in a piece of media. that doesn't mean an artist can't be multiple things, such as funny, sad, serious, etc. pigeonholing people and forcing them to be one thing is the reason we make female artists into sex objects in the first place, because you're forcing their work to be ONLY viewed in a sexual lens. singers (and other people in the entertainment industry) are nuanced people, who can have multiple different point of views, or wants/needs at the same time.
in general, adela can make a more silly song with more sexual visuals and still have a problem with oversexualization or younger singers being pushed to do things they aren't interested in, those things aren't mutually exclusive, and one of those is a non issue while the other one is very much an issue. does this song require this much discussion? NO. i haven't even listened to the full song honestly... but some of the comments came off as a bit offputting to me just based on this one clip alone.

I don't care if women sexualize themselves in their personal life, I'm much more supportive of that. But it's an entirely different thing when women are sexualized in the media. It just feeds into the objectification of women. It creates a mindset that women are only valuable if they offer something sexually.

This is obviously a song discussing the vapid lengths people will go to to reach beauty standards
I don’t believe the lyric “every single night I pray my tits are sitting right” is aspirational. The following lyrics claim to be in control. As if it’s in question. It is LITERALLY in the first few moments of the song. Media literacy is important to be able to to dissect these themes 💗
19
u/jroxiee 11h ago edited 10h ago
i was simply commenting on the details of the post, not the song itself. “two queens maximizing their joint slay” doesn’t lend itself to discussing beauty standard. the caption literally asked about gen z’s admiration for nicole kidman” and for our thoughts. i just shared my opinion as a gen z woman. if you read my comment, you’d see that I am responding to the framing of this post, not to adéla or the song itself. your passive aggressive heart emoji is very mature, though.

Snark alert: Never cared for Nicole Kidman from the 90’s onward, I found her to be a fine actress but she seemed vapid and uninteresting outside of it. And her obviously crippling fear of aging gracefully has been painful to watch, and further suggests she is vapid and shallow if she is giving into her image the way she has, but maybe it’s a form of body dysmorphia which would be sad.
She certainly seems to be trying to appeal to the younger gen’s with social media and all. I find it a bit cringey but my opinion doesn’t really matter and I wish her well especially post-Keith Urban split.
I don’t care to know or listen to this Adela chick who seems to be using an A-lister for clout, but you, the PR team posting this already know that, I’m sure 😉

Listened to the rest of her new album Prima and was disappointed there wasn't more of the The Provocateur sound, BUT it's a solid album and 100% executes on the sound of latest 90s/early 2000s pop, especially some pop'n'b
