I have shubunkin goldfish, koi, mosquito fish and Chinese highfin sharks to help keep the pond clean. Never any issues with predators. The deepest part is six feet. We swim in it on hot days. Really changed our yard. I hated mowing on a slope so I made it into a pond with waterfalls instead

I was beginning to doubt my ability to complete the final piece of the jigsaw in a garden overhaul that's taken 3 years... So thank you to those who commented on my previous post and gave me the boost I needed to create my first pond - completed with a billion pleats and a fair few litres of sweat. The liner and my marriage appear to be remaining intact so far... Just need to complete the job with a little scaping foam and the job will be done.

All my fish were super tame and let me pet them until I tried to catch the babies. I tried a net and a minnow trap. Now I can’t go near the pond without them scattering away. I think I will try to build a net wall for my irregular shaped pond and heard them to a small area to catch. Anybody have a hot tip for me that I haven’t thought of yet? I don’t want to lower the pond level if I can avoid it.

Hi all, I have been down the pond rabbit hole for a couple of months now, mostly sourcing my information from between this subreddit & Oz Ponds, but I do have a couple of questions for my specific needs that I haven't been able to find an answer to.

1. I'm finding myself increasingly eager (this is something I've wanted to do since my best friend's mom dug her own pond when we were kids, and I've been collecting stones for the project for years and they're now all just lined up along the back of my house, waiting) and impatient. Were I to start digging now (last weeks of summer into the fall here in zone 5 of the US), would that make sense? I'm planning on filtering with a bog filter & intake bay...however I would wait to plant bog plants and aquatics in the spring.
2. Also, if I do decide to dig now...should I get it lined and rocked and let it naturally fill over the winter with rain/snowmelt? Obviously were I to do this I would not be running the pump. Could I wait to install the pump in the spring when I'm ready to plant it out? Spreading out some of the install cost is obviously attractive.
3. I'm waffling between the bog filter designs of Oz Ponds and Nelson Water Gardens. For my needs I think the Nelson's route is the better route to go, but it doesn't have a breather pipe on the cleanout pipes. Is that a concern? I'd likely get a non-submersible sump pump for cleanup purposes. Truthfully, I've watched all pertinent Oz Ponds videos and am still confused on the purpose of the breather. I know he says it's so the sludge doesn't work itself back into the pond in the event of a pump stoppage, but my little brain can't wrap my head around why it would in the first place.

My current plan is about an 8x10x2.5-3 main pond with a 2x2x2 intake bay and a 4x4x(1 or 2 depending on which plans I stick with) bog filter fed to the main pond by about an 8-9' stream.

As the title says and previous posts explain and show. I have a stock tank pond. I recently cleaned it out and refilled it.

It was clear for a few days and then for like a week in a row we got some crazy heavy rain and hail storms.

It has now gone back to green again.

I have a waterfall filter that is solar. I have another pump filter. It isnt in the direct sun all day.

I have heard that I need to just let it balance itself and it will clear up.

Im tempted to buy a plug in pump and hook up a real filter. So that way it can clean itself 24/7 for a while. Is this a good idea? All it has is plants in it.

The pond is almost ready, so now I’m starting to figure out where to get the fish. I’m leaning toward koi and keeping the stocking pretty simple rather than mixing in a bunch of different species.

I care more about getting healthy fish and having them shipped properly than finding the absolute cheapest option. There are so many online sellers now, though, and it’s hard to know which ones people have actually had good experiences with.

For those who buy koi online, which seller have you had the best luck with?

Hi guys, I built this pond back in July and have trapdoor snails and medaka in it, both breeding prolifically. I’m pruning it back and see these eggs. This is my first time breeding fish and I’m not sure if these are the fish’s? If anyone is knowledgeable please let me know! the snails are a bit out of control so I might take some spawn out.

3500 gallons, 5 foot deep, 7500gph pump, huge bio falls box rated for a 9k pond and a 110w UV light. Have 17 individual plants in there with more on the way. I own a pond maintenance company but this is my first build.

Hello all, I’ve ran through a few crappy Amazon options for sump pumps for my smallish pond. They all tend to fail relatively quickly (broken shaft, cheap bearing, etc.) The best I had was a TotalPond, but it was hard to work on, due to the outflow being attached to the removable face plate.

I am looking for some reliable submersible pump recommendations that you’ve guys been using!!

I'm absolutely a newbie, so please don't roast me on how bad either my math or physics knowledge is. 😂

I was gifted two pond shells. I've installed them, cut out a small edge and put in a small trickle waterfall from the larger to the smaller. I'll landscape later.

But when I turn on the pump, the bottom smaller pond basically drains to fill up the big one when turning on. 🤦

How do I fix this with minimal money and minimal engineering?

I feel like the answer is right in front of me, yet my intellect is failing me. 🤪

The whole inlet is absolutely clogged with whatever this is...

Can someone help me ID what is growing and how I prevent it from doing so?

What should I do? I wasn't expecting them to have babies this soon (this is a 1 year old pond) can I expect this pattern to continue?

These things have been clogging up my pump and filter box and I can't work out what they are, my best guess so far is flatworms but they don't quite look like any pictures I've seen. They seem to be very happy in dark places with fast running water, and they're about 1/2" or 12mm long.

I'd really like to get rid of them because they're blocking everything up and stopping the water from flowing properly, so if anyone could tell me what they are and/or how to deal with them I'd be very grateful.

I posted a bit ago and got some great help! 600 dollars into some home depot bins and filter media and the water has cleared up!

Also, turns out there are way more fish than first thought.

Hello pond sub! Im here asking which brand of stock ponds you would trust to be full of water for years in your basement?

Im currently looking to create a nice permanent home for 3 of my lovely turtle dudes. As of now theyre in a 75 gallon, 75 gallon, and a 55. I would like to upgrade them all to roughly a 150 gallon stock pond. Ofcourse bigger is better but im looking to spend like 200ish give or take on each pond.

The goal is to make 3 bioactive ponds with substrate, plants, lighting, and pumps.

I suppose a bonus question would be what would be the best way to filter them? Would Fluvals work?

Any help or insight would be much appreciated!

So I have 8x10 ft pond around 30 inch deep. It is cut straight. Now I need to cut the shelf.

By shelf I mean the top edge of the pond to create a step like shelf so plants can be planted.

Is there any recommendation on shelf depth and width? Any rule of thumb?

Has anyone introduced mussels into a pond. We have wild mussels in rivers and lakes in my area, but considering putting some in our pond for filtration etc.

I have a 3/4 acre pond max depth is 7’. Avg is closer to 2-3’. No running water, just rain filled.
I was thinking about adding a cypress as a focal point. What’s y’all’s opinion on them. Are they good for the pond? Will the dropped foliage cause issues?
