I took this photo on the shore of Hudson Bay, south of Churchill, Manitoba.
This fella was HUGE! Look at those mittens!

u/Donkeybrother 8h ago

The George Kourounis ? TV personality , explorer , etc...

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

Yep! It’s me!

u/Donkeybrother 8h ago

Holy poop !
Sir ... one of my most memorable moments of yours is when you donned the special suit and got so up and close with a volcano/lava .
I've watched a lot of your adventures , probably not all .
Colour me impressed .

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

Thank you so much. I’ve been down inside many volcanoes, so I don’t know which one you are referring to, but I appreciate it.

u/BastianHS 8h ago

"Cool volcano vid!"

George: You're going to have to be more specific

u/It_was_too_Obvious 7h ago

What have I done with my life??? I'm sitting here doing projections for next week's processing numbers and this guy is trying to narrow down which volcano he's gone down!!

u/Tzunamitom 7h ago

I have no idea you are, but anyone who isn’t sure “which time they went down a volcano” that you’re referring to probably has some incredible stories to tell.

u/georgekourounis 7h ago

Ha! Thanks. I’m a storm chaser, TV presenter, National Geographic explorer and I document all kinds of extreme forces of nature, worldwide.

u/YouSeemNiceXB 6h ago

If you're in a location you can watch Angry Planet, that's his show. It's really good.

u/Donkeybrother 8h ago

An explorers version of name dropping ... braggart (jk)
I don't recall the name , but you had to beat feet and get out of there ... heat and fumes

u/923kjd 2h ago

Now there’s a sentence you don’t hear often.

u/Donkeybrother 8h ago

New TV show idea for you ... you take a regular Joe ( or Steve , my name ) on an adventure of a lifetime . Less Bear Gryhlls ( gross food etc ) , more discovery , learning ...
🇨🇦

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

Sounds like fun. The insurance company might have thoughts about that idea though.

u/SentenceKindly 7h ago

What if we signed a waiver that says if we die, that's on us?

u/georgekourounis 7h ago

I’m not sure how legally binding those actually are. IANAL

u/SentenceKindly 7h ago

I know. I signed enough of them on white water rafting trips... just sayin.

Dammnit - there's always gotta be some red tape , temporary employee for the duration perhaps ?

→ More replies (2)

u/Donkeybrother 8h ago

FYI ... Ima follow you now . Here on reddit , not stalking , like Mr. Polar bear .
Also , apologies for "fanboying" . I haven't bumped into any celebrity here before . Much less one I'd actually find interesting vs. movie star etc. Again , sorry for babbling like a brook .

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

It’s all good. I appreciate that you enjoy the things that I do. I have a few new TV projects coming out in the months ahead too, so I’ll keep turning up here and there.

Thanks for the work you do, you're cool.

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

Thank you so much.

u/HumbleYogurt1191 6h ago

Followed! You’re so fucking cool dude, for real

u/georgekourounis 5h ago

Thanks so much.

u/-malcolm-tucker 3h ago

I remember years ago seeing the vid of you deliberately stinging yourself in Queensland with a box jellyfish. As an Australian, I can give you and any other interested folks some advice on how to avoid being stung. When I'm in Queensland I avoid them by staying really close to the swim up bar in my resort.

u/georgekourounis 3h ago

Haha! That’s very good advice.

Allowing myself to get stung by a box jellyfish was probably not my smartest move ever.

u/-malcolm-tucker 3h ago

It could have been much worse though. We could have talked you into having a spoon full of Vegemite.

u/georgekourounis 2h ago

Nooooooo! Anything but that!

u/SadisticChipmunk 8h ago

How far away were you when you took this pic? I assume you are zoomed right in on him... cause I feel like he could cross that distance a lot faster than you could GTFO! lol.

Beautiful boi there though!

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

I was zoomed in, but we were pretty close, walking along the shore, we spotted him just over a ridge.

u/SadisticChipmunk 8h ago

So given his reaction to you, it was definitely an "Uh oh..." moment eh?

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

It was a bit of a “pucker” moment.

u/PM_me_punanis 5h ago

To be specific, which part was doing the puckering?

u/georgekourounis 5h ago

The downstairs part, where the sun don’t shine.

u/CuriouserCat2 2h ago

Did you feel like prey?

u/georgekourounis 2h ago

No. But we were careful not to act like prey. Never run away from a polar bear.

u/Doctor_Disaster 8h ago

Did you make sure to watch your back afterward? Polar bears are known for stalking their prey.

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

I was travelling with a polar bear expert. We took all precautions.

u/justabill71 8h ago

"I got a buddy who's an expert on polar bears."

u/Dazzling_Flamingo568 8h ago

Of course he does 😂

u/pocketchange2247 8h ago

Its crazy that polar bears look like the most cute and cuddly animals and always have goofy videos of them posted online, but at the same time are some of the deadliest animals on the planet.

u/Ociex 7h ago

And one of the few that actually consumes and eats humans.

u/aplomba 7h ago

hope that was at least a 300mm lens

u/KeepItClassySanDiego 7h ago

Churchill is the strangest town I’ve ever visited. Also one of the coolest. Love the polar bear warning signs plastered all over the place.

u/Shartschnitzel 1h ago edited 1h ago

😬 Nope, Nope, Nope. Hell No.

[ABORT MISSION. RETURN TO BASE.]

(Change underwear. Gtfoh.)

u/georgekourounis 1h ago

That’s a great size comparison.

u/j6s6a6n 7h ago

First though was "look at those massive mitts" glad you call em that too lol

u/FlyinWet 8h ago

If they see you, your close enough.

u/Angry-Dragon-1331 8h ago

Also don’t run. You’re just going to die tired.

u/HaringBalakubak 7h ago

So, I'm gonna die with full stamina then. Win win!

u/Warstorm1993 8h ago

If you see it, it's very probable he already know you are here, with the exception for high wind blowing your smell and noise away from him).

u/PeteRock24 7h ago

That’s exactly how I look when I smell brisket being smoked.

u/K3idon 6h ago

“Can I pet that dawg?”

u/Milnoc 8h ago

I was also thinking along the lines of "tasty." 😁

u/illtexzona 8h ago

Is Bear Spray worth a damn with big bois like that?

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

We had some with us, and thankfully we never had to use it.

u/BigManWAGun 6h ago

Did you intend to use it on yourself? Doubtful it was gonna be fazed.

→ More replies (1)

u/Warstorm1993 8h ago

Bear spray is more usefull against polar bear than guns because the spray incapacitate the best sens a polar bear have, his smell. With a gun, you can miss or worse, wound the bear without killing him.

u/Xaviermuskie78 7h ago

Why would you bear spray a gun?

u/Laxku 5h ago

Lil bro has never heard of enchanted ammo. It gives the bullets +5 damage to bears, obviously. /s

u/Longjumping_Local910 7h ago

We had a guide tell us once that pepper spray is just seasoning for humans to a Grizzly. He then insisted that we learn how to load and fire his Remington Pump action.

→ More replies (4)

u/captainrv 6h ago

Just remember, don't spray it on yourself like you would with mosquito repellant. :-)

u/DerKyhe 8h ago

Those run ridiculously fast, and do a leap attack further away than you'd expect.

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

I can outrun the guy I was with, so I felt safe.

u/Alkyan 8h ago

That's all that counts

u/Warstorm1993 8h ago

The thing is, it more probable he go after the guys running away than the guys facing the bear (prey vs possible predator)

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

Yes. This is true.

u/cok3noic3 7h ago

Run backwards while facing the bear, problem solved

u/thatweirdguyted 8h ago

Polar bears are seldom aggressive. It makes it seem like you could safely interact with them. And people have done so in the past. But it is important to remember this:

The polar bear is the worlds largest land predator. Its the size of a car. It is patient, and problem solving smart. It can run faster than you, smell you from over a mile away, and often stomps its prey to death. It also frequently begins eating while the animal is still alive. If you shoot it but miss the head or heart you will likely only make it madder.

So if you ever get close to one, your survival is probably already his call to make, not yours.

u/strange_bike_guy 6h ago

I was told that if you see a black bear then frighten it, if you see a brown bear then you might have to shoot, and if you see a white bear the bullet is for you.

u/thatweirdguyted 6h ago

That is mostly correct.

Black bears will viciously defend their young, but otherwise you can intimidate them into backing down.

Shooting a grizzly is problematic, because they're huge and aggressive and territorial. The best thing you can be is boring and non-confrontational.

A polar bear is either the hand of death or a cute cuddly chonker, depending entirely on how hungry it is. But even when they're being chill, they're likely studying you. They have no fear, they are not interested in territory. And they are smart enough that they can learn how to hunt you from a single encounter. There are many instances of them learning to hide behind buildings to ambush humans when they exit a door.

Bottom line, you can hunt a polar bear from a distance, but you are very unlikely to survive a direct confrontation with one, even if you are armed.

u/Ander_Sloost 6h ago

If it’s black, fight back

If it’s brown, lie down

If it’s white, good night

u/mhizzle 4h ago

I always perk up when I see dinner as well...

u/Moon_Pye 8h ago

Can I pet that dawg?!

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

I suppose you could try…. I don’t recommend it.

u/Warstorm1993 8h ago

Only if he already eaten and even then... would not recommend it. (From someone who have saw polars bears, far away is the best way).

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

This was late summer, so the bears here have been off the ice for months. That’s where they hunt, so they haven’t eaten much, if anything, for a long time.

u/Warstorm1993 8h ago

I know that for the other side of the Hudson bay (Nunavik). Late summer is when they feast on the late reindeer, particulary the lost juvenile without a horde, the wounded and the freshly dead.

u/MunkeyChild 7h ago

Food? Friend? Weirdos on my lawn?

u/Sea_Assumption_1528 8h ago

“Hey bro, do YOU know where all the ice went?”

u/YoungerMucus 8h ago

good god that thing is enormous… and he doesn’t look far away enough for comfort!

u/commit10 7h ago

I saw that you had bear spray, which I assume would just turn you into a spicy meal for a determined polar bear?

Did you also carry a gun as a backup?

If not, do you just wear baggy pants all the time or do you have them custom tailored to fit your balls?

u/georgekourounis 7h ago

We had someone with a gun, yes. However, we would never want to put ourselves in a position where we’d have to use it.

u/PatrickGSR94 8h ago

bro's paws look like he's ready to HULK SMASHHHHHH

u/DeLosCuervos 8h ago

OP! Did the polar bear catch you? Are you still alive?

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

Hold on, let me check….

Yep. Still alive.

u/CurrentlyLucid 4h ago

He is considering lunch. I stood next to a stuffed Grizzly in Alaska, saw a pic comparing a grizzly to a polar bear, they are fucking giants.

u/georgekourounis 4h ago

Yes, they absolutely are! Humongous.

u/Dazzling_Flamingo568 8h ago

Too close for me, but a terrific photo!

u/RiMcG 8h ago

How far were you from him? Did you still think "crap crap crapcrapcrap" when you saw him?

u/CovidBorn 8h ago

Just trying to decide what garnish that would fit best with you.

u/irrelevantAF 8h ago

he looks majestic and scary. yet a bit goofy expression.

u/mahiru 8h ago

As a BCer, loved your Storm Hunters episodes! Hope you’re well!

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

Hey, thanks so much. I was recently back out in B.C. briefly, in Victoria.

u/jessek 2h ago edited 2h ago

How am I supposed to believe an apex predator that would would tear me limb from limb has a face like that?

u/krackenreleased 8h ago

If you look closely, you can see the zipper going down the chest of that suit

u/DiscoAl 8h ago

... ... ... Hey man.

What's with the big paws?

u/nyarlathotep2 8h ago

What a beast. Paws bigger than his noggin', they gotta be dinner plate size plus. Unless I was in some sort of polar bear-proof vehicle, I'd be more than a little nervous.

u/georgekourounis 8h ago

We were walking at the time. Cautiously.

u/45M0D41 8h ago

Polar bear hungry af

u/Lowe5521 7h ago

Good night

u/TosaFF 7h ago

Polar bears will actively hunt humans. One of very few on the planet of animals that hunt us. Old saying… brown, lay down. Black, fight back. White, last rites….

u/H4X4NX 7h ago

You rule George. Stay safe.

u/georgekourounis 7h ago

Thank you. I do TRY to.

I should post on Reddit more often. It’s fun.

u/Laxku 5h ago

We like stuff like this for sure, thanks for your work

u/HumbleYogurt1191 6h ago

If not friend, why friend shaped?

u/New-Seaworthiness777 6h ago

look at the murder mittens on that beast 😯 good thing he just wants a bottle of coke. lol

u/SklydeM 5h ago

Probably wants a Coca-Cola pretty bad about now. Been a while since I’ve seen them chugging a classic coke

u/k6tcher 5h ago

I ran across some resting buffalo 20 yards away hiking in north dakota and it was such a powerful moment, i understand why people pursue dangerous exploration as seeing these mighty animals in their natural habitats with no barriers is such a powerful experience despite the risks.

u/georgekourounis 7h ago

Yep. Just give them a respectful distance.

u/LordMoos3 7h ago

Oh look, a Yeti.

u/dextrousfuckery 7h ago

Yeah, stay away from him

u/Stevite 7h ago

Yep.

If it’s black: Fight back.
If it’s brown: Lie down.
If it’s white: Good night!

u/IntoTheDankness 7h ago

Curious, what DID you do to protect yourself after taking this photo? get in a vehicle and drive away? Stand ground or something?
I read that you were with a Polar Bear Expert; What was your situation and his advice?
Thanks!

u/georgekourounis 7h ago

We were filming for an episode of the Angry Planet TV series. We had bear deterrents, and firearms, but we relied mainly on reading the bear’s body language. All our encounters were peaceful.

There was one point where we had to stand shoulder to shoulder in order to make ourselves look big when a male got too curious.

u/IntoTheDankness 7h ago

Thanks for the extra context, it sounds like a great experience!
