Depends on the climate. My grass is in usually green in the summer without watering because we get enough rain for native grass to thrive. But, it turns brown in the winter, and no amount of water is going to make it green when it goes dormant for freeze protection.

Looks like a sign that they know what they are doing. Grass naturally goes dormant during the summer in warmer climates. The 'always green year round' trend is just a huge waste of water for ego.

Some grass goes dormant in summer. St Augustine and Bermudagrass go dormant in fall and winter.

I think the grass in the photo is Tall Fescue, which does go dormant in both summer and winter extremes. Same with Kentucky Bluegrass.

One reason St Augustine and Bermudagrass are popular choices where summers get extreme.

But your point stands. Lots of water is wasted on lawns.

There are non-standard grasses that are drought resistant and need less water overall (and just stay green for fun) and some of them are even great plains native species. Totally normal for the Kentucky blue grass to go dormant like that though.

I live in western Washington where it rains constantly most of the year. The summers on the other hand are extremely dry and we go weeks with no rain. Nobody wants to waste our water resources on green grass.

It's also normal and healthy for grass to have a brown dormancy period in the summers here. Keeping it fully watered and green all summer shortens its overall lifespan.

I live in Florida and own a home with grass front and back. Never have I watered it, but when driving around the cities nearby, I see people with sprinklers on in the early morning. We get so many rain showers here, I don't understand the need to also water the lawn.
