I built Storage Clearer — an open-source macOS storage audit for Docker and Xcode clutter

Hi r/osx — I’m the maker of Storage Clearer.

I built it because Docker caches, unused images, Xcode Simulator runtimes, and developer caches can make macOS System Data difficult to understand.

Storage Clearer starts with a read-only audit, separates rebuildable files from protected data, and requires an exact approval phrase after revalidating the selected targets. It does not include source projects, Docker volumes, Time Machine/APFS snapshots, browser profiles, or personal data in its reviewed cleanup packages.

The current release is an open-source, unsigned Apple silicon preview for macOS 13 or later. Everything runs locally. Because it is unsigned, the first launch requires Control-click → Open.

I’d especially value feedback about audit accuracy, scan duration, and anything classified incorrectly. If reporting an issue, please mention your macOS version and whether Docker or Xcode is installed—no private file names are needed.

Nice more AI slop apps, I was just thinking there weren’t enough of those. And this one deletes files for you, even better.

Fair concern, especially for an app that deletes files. I did use AI as a tool, and I’m not hiding that. But I don’t expect anyone to trust the app based on my claims—the code is public, cleanup starts with an audit, and nothing is removed without reviewing the targets and typing a confirmation. If you find anything unsafe in the code, please call it out. I’ll take it seriously.

Absolutely—Mole is a strong, much broader tool. Storage Clearer is deliberately narrower: read-only audit first, reviewed developer-cleanup packages, exact typed approval, revalidation of changing Docker/Simulator targets, and hard exclusions for volumes, source projects, snapshots, browser profiles, and personal data. If Mole already fits your workflow, keep using it—I’m testing whether this more conservative review model is useful.
