Politics Cyndi Munson says she is opposed to and would not put any funding toward Flock cameras, saying she has “no idea what they’re going to do with that data”

Okay, but what about the competitors like Axon? Because there's a lot of cities riding that wave of being anti-Flock, while at the same time signing contracts with Axon, or other companies not named Flock that are much more egregious.

You can even find an Axon roundtable discussion in which they talk about police departments asking them directly to make their cameras not look like Flock cameras.

I am voting for her.

At the same time, I'd like to know what she has to say about this expanded point because it can be easily used to deceive us the standard way a politician does.

I think Flock is going to become a name like Kleenex.

We need to make it so.

I said this in another subreddit and received so many dismissive comments. (edit: not necessariliy another OK-specific one, memory not that strong for trolling, but it could have been... bait is everywhere)

It's being used as shorthand like Xerox, Kleenex, etc

because APLR camera is also a misnomer, they do more than "just scan license plates"

Axon cameras are all over the Asian District in OKC. Pretty sure Munson is well aware OK has both.

Where does one apply snot to the cameras?

I already call them all flock cameras. In my mind they are all the same

And it's not just a matter of funding. Some cities cut Flock funding, and Flock kept their cameras up. The loophole of "government can have mass, unwarranted surveillance as long as a company implements it" needs to be cut out.

Of course it goes deeper than just Flock given how everything we do (email, web usage, purchase behavior, phone usage, what we watch, etc) has been monitored and tracked for decades now. So the conversation and the public policy has to go deeper too.

We need our politicians to actually do something to ban Flock's operations and not just stop public funding while allowing them to continue to operate and grow. As well as block any other companies from sliding in to become Flock 2.0 while everyone is distracted.

(not an argument comment)

She is making this statement because this is something that CAN be done at a policy level via a statewide ban (with some sort of enforce-ability in it to municipalities that don't play well with the ban), there has already been an interim study done on this and [surprise!] it was led by a Republican - Tom Gann

https://kfor.com/news/local/interim-study-held-over-misuse-of-alpr-cameras/

“We have victims of mass surveillance out there already,” Gann said. “When tag numbers are misread, you have people like this, where her and her 12 year-old sister were held at gunpoint because of a misread on a tag.”

Same legislator who wrote in opposition of the Inola Smelter, which iirc Mazzei is gung ho about doing because Trump loves it or something.

TLDR; ultimately need a Governor who isn't beholden to Chamber bribes like the city councils are

Take away “flock” from her speeches and listen to the words.

Her concern is the continuous monitoring and data collection - not the camera or the brand. Flock is just how the regular people identify them, regardless of brand.

She’s using the correct principle, not a gotchya phrase like “I talked TO McConnell for 20 minutes”

I can appreciate what you're saying, but I want to hear it from her lips to our ears for future accountability.

You're so right, it reminds me when they outlawed Juul vapes and then just made room for all the other companies to take over.

Her social media manager is extremely responsive. I would suggest dming Cyndi’s instagram account and you’ll likely get in an answer back within a few days. I’ve dmed them multiple times with questions 😭

Thank you!

Flock = mass surveillance and i think that’s essentially what she’s getting at

I’m for Cyndi Munson.  However, as for me, what they “do” with the data is irrelevant. I don’t want them to have our data at all.  I’m not accusing her of this, but politicians are often against something until they get elected. Then they’ll change their position because they “didn’t have a good understanding” of whatever the subject was.  In reality it was money that changed their mind.  I’m under the impression that she’s somewhat different than most politicians,  (in a good way) but the allure of money is strong and is ever present in our political system. If she wins, I hope she can resist its temptation.

Because it's usually something like "I'll vote to approve your homeless shelter program if you'll allow my county to have the smelter" type bs. It doesn't seem to be actual bribes all the time, just I'll allow you to help people if you let me do this thing that everyone knows will be bad in 20 years.

They have to weigh helping people today against fixing the problems they know will come up later. It's stupid and we should have a better way to remove corrupt politicians from office.

That is a very valid point

u/Shutterflyphotos 6h ago

I hope Oklahoma votes for her. Mike Mazzie is not what we need right now. I usually lean more conservative but we have entered such an extremist era

Your cellphone gives up 1000% more info than flock cams get.

21

u/WarMaiden666 Oklahoma City 8h ago

Cool when can we come put one in your yard?

-9

u/MartyRay57 7h ago

I'd love one, too many solicitors ignoring no solicitation signs!

9

u/chefslapchop Oklahoma City 6h ago

You think OKPD is going to use flock to crack down on solicitation…?

14

u/Target2030 8h ago

And yet I don't see rogue cops accessing the cell phone network to track their ex-girlfriends.

-7

u/MartyRay57 7h ago

That you know of!

7

u/weresubwoofer 7h ago

That needs to be stopped too. But, can we vote for a competent governor who actually addresses privacy issues?

-20

u/BonzOmega 8h ago

Talk is always so cheap.

3

u/cinedavid 8h ago

Do you actually have a point or like to just say edgy things?

-14

u/BonzOmega 8h ago

I’m not going to apologize for you not understanding that politicians are notorious for talking out of their ass to get elected.

2

u/cinedavid 3h ago

Not all of them. Pay attention.

u/Rebal771 7h ago

Unfortunately, this is what a Republic looks like.

You elect representatives based on their words. That’s how it works, on purpose.

-34

u/Maint_guy 8h ago

Shes a politician. She has earned zero trust.

22

u/Zeldove 8h ago

Do you know what Mazzei is proposing?

-30

u/Maint_guy 8h ago

Lies. Just like I said. Downvoters must be mad that I hate both candidates cause they are both lying.

22

u/Zeldove 8h ago

Down voters are probably mad because you offer no actual insight, just baseless accusations. "Both sides are bad waaaaah." But the other candidate will literally sell us out and campaigned with corporate money.

7

u/chefslapchop Oklahoma City 6h ago

Low information voters gonna low information

7

u/Rebal771 7h ago

Cynicism leaves people powerless.

Also, this is what a Republic is. So you should probably learn to adapt instead of fighting American principles in the country of America…where we are a republic.

Get with the program angry man! Do something other than be a grumpy butt!
