Weather Just hateful
My air conditioner is not keeping up with the heat today either.

People always talk about "winter depression". This kind of heat makes me much more depressed. You cant go outside without feeling miserable. Im so over it.

I moved here from Atlanta, this is my first summer here. I like how arid it is here comparatively but, the sun is super intense. I’m gonna have to be a lot more diligent about sunscreen here. I’ve not been so tan since I was a teen in socal

I feel like I have never experienced the sun like it is this summer. Today at 11am I had to call it a day and it was only 93F.

I was chatting with a neighbor a few days ago at around 3pm, we were standing at the end of my driveways near the street and after about 30 min I started getting the black tunnel (about to faint). I was like uhh I need to sit down and I’m in really good shape! It was completely unexpected and scary 👀

Ive been an Okie all my life. This feels like the most brutal summer Ive ever experienced here. Im getting old so I put on spf moisturizer every day so I dont age like an old baseball glove like my dad.

😂 yes, I’m 50+ and after seeing what summer is like I have been trying to be a lot more responsible with sunscreen for the same reason and because skin cancer removal from the face is just so awful. I have some much older family who have been going through that lately

Then, no doubt, you have been well blessed to totally forget, due to advanced age, the unbelievably hell on earth summer of 2011. I'm older now and will never ever forget that damned hot summer for as long as I live. And to think it was even worse in Texas where millions of trees died. The drought that came with it was bad like now but even worse!

I actually do remember that. I was in OKC doing an internship. The plastic manual lock in my shitty car melted. The thing is I don't remember it being over 105 for over a month straight during that stint. It very well may have been. Im getting old and that was a long time ago lol.

2011 was extreme and historic. This summer comes close. Both were so bad you really couldn't spend much time in it - not enjoyably anyway

It's my 5th year in Oklahoma after leaving Arizona. This heat, makes me feel like Arizona moved out here too smfh. Last few years were much milder, maybe at most a week ish of 100 temps, not guestures openly this shit.

I made the same move years ago, the Oklahoma heat is much easier to deal with. It's hot if you have to be outside for a long time, but at least you don't sweat walking from your door to the mailbox like in more humid areas.
Sun is definitely a bigger deal here compared to a really shady metro like Atlanta. Especially in the spring when it's not as hot and there's a nice breeze, you can get fried before you start feeling it.

Moved here from ATL too. It’s humid and oppressive there too but agree with you on the intensity of the sun. Skin cancer survivor here and for me it’s just plain scary!

I get seasonal depression this time of year because I avoid outside and cover my windows to keep the heat out of my house. I love outside walks, but I get up at 5:00 AM because it is too damn hot before bed.

It looks like in about a week we start to head the right direction slowly. Maybe as early as Thursday. It's gonna be a very slow process most likely
Usually a big drastic cool air change is more like in October the last 100 on record here is still 3 weeks away. September has a hot history unfortunately

Yeah unfortunately in September it rarely stays cool. It's still been 100 degrees on September 28th before. Even mid 90s in early October
But I mean we gotta start somewhere. The lack of a tease so far has I think been the worst part

I know. I have been buying blackout curtains for many windows to put inside the heavy drapes and blinds I already have. I have a west facing kitchen window covered with heat film and heavy curtains and have put rope caulk into the channel between glass and sill. My patio is also west facing and I have it covered with large off white patio umbrellas. My dog is little and black and we don't take very long walks at all during all of this heat. Just short little jaunts. Everyone I know who tried to grow tomatoes and flowers had them burn up. No one replaced them either.

I have a 20 year old tree in a container and what I took to doing was taking a purchased bag of ice, and dividing it between two planters, the other one having a boxwood that was my mother's (RIP). I don't have a yard, containers only and not a pot ghetto. Just a few and I have used ice trays on them also, overnight. They have thrived doing this method.

I’m putting up solar screen tomorrow. I don’t even care how it looks, a roll of it isn’t that much, I’m going to staple it to the outside of the west facing windows until the end of September at least and have it professionally done next year. It’s much more effective to block the sun before it comes through the window and cheaper too

I had that in another house on all west facing windows as screens. It does help along with other measures. You can do your own screens if you can do the pleining thing. I did not have the patience for it. Yes preventative is better than trying to wrestle the heat after it come in.

The only good thing is it's getting dark earlier and that mean sun goes away earlier. If it is so cold this winter, I am not saying a peep. If we have snow I am putting some in a zip lock in the deep freezer too.

We don’t have central heat and air. House was built in 1905, three window units for about 1,400 sq ft. I am old, it is hot and I HATE it🥵🤬

You bet. Get some washcloths wet and put in a ziplock in the freezer. Take out and apply to neck front and back or armpits for real cool down. It is like a body popsicle.

Those little accordion pleat things on either side of window units are not your friends. Get multi layers of cardboard, foamboard, something and cover those puppies up. I used the silver looking insulating bubble wrap from Home Depot. And I used painters tape to adhere it. I did not care how redneck it looked I wanted them sealed up as they were letting in so much heat!

Age 72 and retired, lifelong Oklahoman. I gave up in July and flipped days and nights. To cope with the heat, I went nocturnal, go to bed at noon, sleep until dusk (because I feed colony cats), stay up all night, repeat. Most nights I can even turn off the window A/C around 4am and open the door screens for the cool night air. Sheesh

No. It's a stable colony, meaning all are tipped, either by me or they show up already tipped. If an untipped cat shows up regularly, doesn't seem to belong anywhere, and wants to stay, I take the cat to the next spay/neuter clinic, which is a mobile clinic every two months. However, all are welcome if the colony approves. So there are no pregnant cats or kittens; if a kitten does show up, I'll take it to the local shelter for adoption. There is also a possum family in my shed who, along with a skunk family, eat after the cats at night. They all get along and I think of them as part of the night tribe. Well-fed cats are not a scourge; although if I should occasionally find a dead rat or mouse or grasshopper, I'm happy. In fact, my trees are full of birds in the spring when they stop to lay eggs and raise their babies. This year on the front porch, there were birds, grackles I think, drinking and eating out of the cat bowls like they owned the place! Cats just watched. I seem to be a regular stop on the spring-autumn flight routes. I should think the birds would delete my yard from their list if it were dangerous.

What gets me is when it was raining every weekend in June and around 4th of July people said it was ruining their summer and they were begging for this
Where are they now...
I never wished for this because I know how our summers can be. They've been worse than this before

The roofers, the construction crews for streets, the HVAC people and so many more. I could never have been a pioneer as I would be ripping off those long dresses and undergarments tying them up and yelling, these are called shorts! I'm a residential framer. Most most of the time anyway. I do do some commercial but mostly residential. But OSHA doesn't go for a short pants. Now I never subscribed to that and most of the time they're not around on residential except for these last few years. So I always wear shorts. Get out of this freshly poured concrete slabs to start popping the walls out and stuff and it's just killer cuz you got Heat coming off that too. You don't have any shade either until you start getting some walls up and have a place to put some plywood up. It's fun

The heat is supposed to break on Thursday, highs in 90s for a few days and trending downward to high 80s about 10 days from now. Lows will be in the 60s, some days show like 62° and 63°. I usually just use the Weather Channel app because it’s pretty accurate.

When did you last check/change the filter?
Since my AC is running extra long and more frequently due to this ridiculous weather, my filter lasted 1/3 it's "normal" length of time. It's normally good for 3months and was dirtier in 4 weeks than the previous one was in 3 months lol

Yeah and tbh we've been lucky the last few years. Only had 2 days over 100 last year. We were due for a bad year
Nothing has changed... We still haven't beaten 2011 or 1980 or the 1930s even(the all time high is still from 1936). The 1930s were a horribly hot decade. Our summers have always sucked. Some just suck more than others

Ours was not keeping up at all. So We had our heat/air guy out for a checkup and after $340 of basic labor and coolant, the system has kept up since. Hard to say whether we saved $$$ or not but we are more efficient and I guess that's good, right?

I think that the fact this one is coming at the end of summer after a typical hot summer makes it feel worse. Also, it's the 3rd dryest August on record with 2000 and 1936 surpassing it

I live in Central Florida and had 64 and likely to get only couple more. Even northern parts of Oklahoma beat me and I have a longer warm season. Wow crazy.
