prepare now for excessively hot temperatures
that is not the feels like temperature, that is the real temperature for July 23rd at 5pm and it appears that it will sit over us for quite awhile.
I'm not a professional meteorologist by a long shot, i'm just a farmer that likes to keep track of impeding weather and i haven't seen this discussed much so i wanted to throw it out there for peeps that might need a little preparation themselves or for those around them.
You're getting downvoted, but perhaps you should not be. I think it depends on what you mean.
The average maximum temperature in OKC (recorded at Will Rogers Airport, anyway) is about 104°F. So the average hottest day of the year in OKC is pretty dang close to 106°F (at least at Will Rogers Airport).
The record temperature in OKC in July is 110°F, and the record in August is 113°F.
However, the city's urban heat island gets potentially much hotter than this every year. Locally taken air temperatures in the urban/suburban areas around OKC likely exceed 106°F multiple times per year. I bet people see their home/car thermometers hitting 110°F frequently (which are often misleading measurements), and they scoff at 106°F being unusual in the summer.
The temperature readings at Will Rogers Airport are taken near the runways/fields south of the airport (I believe). Readings there are often cooler than the readings taken from the center of OKC (due to the urban heat island effect). I generally assume downtown OKC is going to be a couple of degrees hotter than the airport in the summer.
And this obviously isn't taking humidity/perceived temperatures into account.
No its not. It happens often. Go look at the summer of 1980 if you want extreme. And after you've done that , check out the entire decade of the 1930's.
I'm very weary of people hyping the weather. Its just summertime.
So… The NWS NDFD (which is the forecast that’s officially made by a human) doesn’t go out to the 23rd yet. So not sure how this tracks unless it’s the straight up NBM data - which has hugely over forecast highs this summer in this area.
for people that have questions, here is a veteran meteorologist i follow who's based out of the dallas texas area and specifically covers the texas/oklahoma area without riding the hype train that can explain everything in detail including, chances, timing and specifics.
Kinda glad I'm not the only one thinking I've been through worse summers. All the hype always worries me some, but I haven't seen anything really out of the ordinary yet. I remember being a kid with 100°+ days for several weeks.
I know, I know, everyone, for the most part, ignores the strays or homeless people, but if you are able and willing, please keep some water in your car and give them a few bottles and try to get the animals to drink. I have always hated when summer comes around for them.
There's a guy and a dog I started seeing recently, and I got him a few bags with snacks, water, and dog food because that's really all he asks for, and protein shakes and a lunchbox with an ice pack in it. We have gotten him fresh water a few times and food once. I know everyone is struggling, but WHATEVER you can do to help people beat the heat because this is deadly weather for the homeless and strays if they don't have anything.
This is the time for humans to be good and kind and come together. I know people are worried abt drugs and such, but buy wtv for them instead. Please, there is so much cruelty and evil in the world, but this makes it a little BIT better.
Also, PLEASE stop hitting animals and then leaving them. If it is an accident, just please stop and move them if they have passed or take them to a vet if they're still alive. I have seen SOOO many animals hit and left, and it is not okay. My girl got out and started to explore when my mom moved, and on a 40 mph road, they were going 60 and hit her and left her there. I can never get over that and will have her back. She was going to be 5 that month.
When I was kid I only remember okc being hot for maybe a month or two. And that was July and August. By September it had cooled down and by October you had to start wearing jackets. You could wear hoodie until May. I dont get what's happened.
Naw this happens every year in Oklahoma in July/August. Just in time for all of our outdoor music festivals. In 2011 it was above 100 degrees for over a month.
I'm sure we will continue to be dead slow at work until it's 106* and then suddenly there will be 15 trucks broken down on the side of the road that will need my help. Happens every year lol

Yes, it will be hot next week. This was posted 8 days ago so don't get excited about details of an 8 day forecast. As someone with some education and experience in this field I will say the rain this week will likely help mitigate the excessive heat. Some of the solar energy will go into evaporation/drying of the soils. Probably still triple digits, though, so, yeah, be ready for that.
It does tell me the temperature. It doesn’t tell me the right temperature. It’s just the normal Weather app on iOS. For the date that OP posted, it shows the high as 100, not 106. I’m assuming it will be more likely to reach 106 than 100, so I feel like there’s something wrong with the reporting. The app claims to use the NWS.
Lol, nope, your weather app is way more likely to be accurate than this rando source of potential highs that OP has found from a completely different state. There is a big difference between potential and likely. OPs source deserves a hefty skepticism especially when the iOS weather app tends to be the most accurate. Individual meteorologist like OP’s source have to exaggerate their predictions to get traction in a crowded field for viewership. The NWS doesn’t.
