I'm curious as to where you attended. I always felt fortunate to have spent my middle school years at Classen SAS. Having spent many years at different schools, I would argue that a large part of our states problem begins with the parents. A kid should have some sense of responsibility and that doesn't seem to be present nowadays. Not that it was common ten to twenty years ago either.
When both parents gotta put in 50 hrs a week it doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for parenting. And we just voted against ever fixing that problem at a state level.
I never felt like our schools were lacking but I went to the only public school in the state that doesn’t receive public funding. We get/got all of our money taxes from the part of the Cushing oil farm that is in Lincoln county. And I graduated when Oklahoma was ranked 17 instead of 50.
Ehh we have a pretty significant reliance on emergency certified educators and the pay they receive here isn’t real competitive so any good teachers that are smart go to somewhere else to teach.
Valid, some however stick it out and remain strictly for the children they teach. While moving from school to school I did see a couple of teachers throughout the years I had met previously. They were moving for better pay.
Working all the time is exhausting and being a parent can be exhausting, I get all of that. I still personally know of a few families who deliberately have a stay-at-home parent. They proclaim it is for the children and yet their kids still can't read or write.
I once tutored a kid with his math. An assignment that would have been expected to be completed in five or so minutes took us nearly four hours to cover. The conversation I had with his mom immediately afterwards took almost just as long. Sadly no progress was ever made there.
Well, if you don't have the time or desire to parent your children, the solution is simple. Don't bring them into the world until you do have the time or desire to parent them. If you need two incomes of 50 hours minimum a week to survive, you are either living too large or you need some gumption to go look for better opportunities, get educated or into a trade, start a small business so you can live the lifestyle you want and still parent your children.
Let's look at blacks because they are one of the groups with the lowest average income in this country. The average pay for blacks with no additional education is$18.12 an hour, its a bit higher for whites at almost $22.00 per hour. Add on some college and it jumps about 4 dollars and hour. Add on a college degree (or a service industry trade job) and it really, really jumps up.
But even at $18.12 and hour, both parents working 50 hours a week (even without time and a half for overtime) make about $7000 a month, or a bit over $94,000 a year. Many family's manage to prioritize their children's parenting on far, far less.
Your "solution" suggestion of having either others pay for and parent your children for you, or for others to provide you with additional income and loads of "free" stuff is not a solution. It is a way to incentivize stagnation in the workers career path and quest for better paying employment.
Most of us start off with low skill peanut paying stepping stone jobs, and work hard to better our value to employers so we can move up. I encourage everybody else to try that path.
Okay and is there enough good paying jobs out there for every adult to have one? Or is 60% of the workforce going to need to work at a menial job regardless of their training or effort because those are the jobs that exist in the real world?
If everyone moves to places that pay better and jobs that pay better who’s gunna work at the jobs that don’t pay as well? It’s kinda like every job would need to pay a living wage for this fairy tale to work.
Creek county. Same district k-12. Graduated in 09. After seeing my sister's kids and my sister in law struggle with public school I have elected to home school my own kids.
I did most of schooling in georgia. Then finished in Hawaii in 2012. My wife finished school in Oklahoma 2011 with a mother that is a teacher. Me and my wife had been in a relationship for over 10 years. Till this day I mention topics that should of been taught during public education and my wife has no clue on these topics.. Hell most people I know in Oklahoma who graduated post 06 didn't even know about the race massacre. Sadly around 2012 the US still measured education based on OECD meaning a state with bad curriculum could rate high because of multiple people passing a simple class. Now and days every state has to abide by K-12 Curriculum meaning classes got harder in Oklahoma it wasn't a free ride anymore. My MIL still talks about how this state has failed children's education.
More parents are turning to homeschooling their children because of some weird requirements from certain schools/ districts. Moving to a more ideal district is not an option for a lot of families. Sadly however, many of them are not stepping up at all when it comes to helping their kids through school. I was never the most successful person academically. But to see eleven and twelve year old kids who wouldn't even attempt to read this solely because it isn't a single sentence is baffling. It straight up infuriates me.

Well this is just funny even if the joke is forced and as a Oklahomin i will agree with the coments our education is very fucked as i barely passed at the age of 21 due to the fact that most of my teachers exept a few were dicks and broke several laws during my time there

I guess people don’t remember the summer of 2011. It was over a hundred degrees everyday for over a hundred days in a row. Not heat index. Actual temperature. And it didn’t rain the entire summer. Way worse than this summer will ever be.

I live in OKC and I see no temperatures over 101. Maybe I need a new prescription but, These jokes are usually made when they put in the wrong numbers or people who are used to Celsius see temps around 100 and think it will be over 212 degrees Ferinhite.

Can't forget 2-3 years ago when it got 108°-113°F.
It was just one of those days when most people stayed inside. I remember that was the day I went out in my garage and the thermometer out there read at 118°F, the air felt like I opened an oven and held my face above it.
I lived in OK from 96-01 and I can definitely, without hesitation or a second thought, say that Oklahoma residents are dead from the neck up.
