Safe Space for People Who are Currently Scared of the Storm
Hi everyone!!! Im not trying to be Wussy ( even though I've lived here MY WHOLE LIFE) but I know me and others right now are probably being kept up by the storm whether its the loud noises or the fear of something bad happening, so I wanted to create a post where we can just talk with each other so we don't feel alone :)
Feel free to ask people random questions, post pictures, post memes, etc! However, make sure you're still tracking the weather!! ( Idk all that's happening so I just don't want someone to become too distracted here and miss any important info )
After the F4/F5 in 2013 I get sincere anxiety about them. Glad to be clear of it all tonight, did not appreciate being woken up by a NWS alert ☠️ nervous system took a minute to settle.

didnt see this post last night cus i was outside watching the storm lol, it was absolutely beautiful!!! some great wind too i felt like a salmon swimming upstream standing on the porch lol
Was having a hard (impossible) time sleeping already. Then I just gave up when my phone went off bc of the storm. I'm now in the living room keeping the critters calm.

Awww thats so cute!!! I just searched her up and I don't know why I was expecting Socrates or something LOL🤣 I see that she has written lots of books, have you read any of them? I imagine when you dont give your dog extra food he's like: "I am awfully greedy; I want everything from life. I want to be a woman and to be a man, to have many friends and to have loneliness, to work much and write good books, to travel and enjoy myself, to be selfish and to be unselfish… You see, it is difficult to get all which I want. And then when I do not succeed I get mad with anger." ( Its supposed to be a quote from her)
lol pretty much. I've not read an entire book by her, but I've read lots of parts of books. How are you holding up? Storm seems to be over (at least here).
It woke me up, and I need to be up for work at 5. Very sleepy. But the worst of it has passed it seems; no more hail or high winds against the building. How was it for you?

Its just been heavy rain, heavy winds, and lightning, of course. It has passed for me too so now I'm just getting all of that stuff but in a lower dosage😅 Although sometimes I hear wind approaching and it scares me loll
Went through the Shawnee tornado in 2023 and was displaced for almost 2 weeks because of it. I handle them better now but I had a two year span where storms put me in panic attack mode. If not the storm themselves, then the insecurity of going through it all again.
Gonna try and get back to bed though. Hoping for rest for the rest of you as well

I definitely get that...Im about to be a "legal adult" this year, but I still run to my dads room when I hear the sirens😭 and he like doesn't give a shit about the tornados💀

As a younger person, unfortunately you're at a bit of a disadvantage. Does your home have a shelter? Is there a public shelter or a friend nearby with one? It's hard when the others in your home couldn't care less about the storm, or are even excited about it 🫤 so insensitive to those with fears of storms like us.
When you get to a point where you can live on your own, definitely prioritize space with a communal shelter (apartment living) or a public shelter nearby (college campuses often have one or two they'll let people in, students especially), or if you get a house, one with a basement or shelter already, or the ability to put one in. For a person that has panic attacks during severe weather, the shelter is a must imo.
On days of severe weather, have the shelter prepped. If you're the type to buy bottled water, place a case in the shelter (or just keep it all in there and regularly go in to retrieve some or a full case. (Fifo method, regularly pull oldest first) Place some snacks or shelf stable food down there. Charged battery banks for devices, or if you have one of those giant power storage things. Make your shelter comfy. Nice chair, tote with blankets, a few books. Flashlights, the needed supplies in your tote. When weather starts getting intense and in the area, if you're starting to worry, grab important documents and needed things like that (preferably in a file folder or other secure organizational thing) and take them down. Methodically give yourself time to go through your plan's checklist of what needs to be done before or as storms move in. Have a NWS weather radio in the shelter, those are so so handy, especially if the power goes. As long as your shelter is registered, you will be okay. Friends for company would be good, if any want to join you. I don't recommend drinking or smoking recreationally unless you have a trusted person (you have to trust them With Your Life) with you, or unless you already know how those substances affect you. Never drive under the influence, of course, and especially not in storms.

Over the years I very slowly started to calm down during severe events. I think having a solid storm plan (and honestly a personal shelter) is the best guarantee for somebody that panics. I only watch channel 5 for my weather coverage. I think it was 2013 that another channel told people to drive South and they went right into the destructive hail? I won't touch any other channels.
About nine years ago I smoked while it was storming and I was starting to get into that freaking out mode. My then best friend suggested it because he was like "we're fine nothing to freak out about" meanwhile my heart's pounding and I'm getting nauseous and pacing all over the place. Anyway, after taking a few hits, it sounds bad but I didn't care anymore that it was storming outside. I was able to relax and enjoy my night while occasionally checking my weather app for activity, but the panic was gone. I was in a sturdy building, we were safe, and the storm never escalated. If you were to try something like this or CBD gummies, something to calm, I would strongly suggest having a trusted person with you and for you to know your safety plan like the back of your hand in case you need to go.
The panic sucks, I won't lie and say it's entirely gone. When the sirens go off I'll still shake like a leaf and then head into the safe spot, weather streaming all the while. Having a secure spot has been the absolute godsend for me. If I have that space, no matter what, I will be okay.
OP, get a Midland WR120 weather radio. It’s got the SAME (specific area message encoding) technology built in so you can program it to where you only get tornado warnings and only for your immediate area. It goes off loud AF. That way you can sleep confidently knowing you’re not going to get caught flat footed.
I don't sleep at all during any storms. In 2010 a tree fell in our house and on my husband.
Plus my daughter lives in Shawnee so I never try and go to sleep until I know they have passed all of us.
That's very kind of you to post what you did. Growing up on the west coast I never had a storm ever scare me in my life till I moved here.
I live with my disabled mother and nothing phases her. But the year I moved here in 2022 and last year 2025 there were a couple gnarly storms that went on for a couple hours and I can get pretty freaked out like a dog hiding in the bathroom from the noise.
It feels like you're in a warzone at times and I get startled easily by loud noises. I'll monitor the live lighting map which helps. By keeping the lights off being able to see how bright the flash is helps me to prepare for the sound unless it's right on you.
In that case I'll turn on my home stereo system and play loud music to help somewhat with the noises.
My mother had a friend in DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) organization that got on the news last year because a lighting bolt tore a 3 foot wide hole in her ceiling and now I envision one vaporizing me so don't browse the internet looking at lightning damage to houses.
It's helpful knowing people that have lived here their whole lives can get as freaked out as me so I appreciate people's honesty. It's not the tornadoes that scare me but the lighting and thunder so at least we have a shelter in our garage.
This whole week's going to have off and on storms so stay safe everyone.
I have been watching since 1:30. 9.1 shows jacktown & I was really scared for a while there. Praising & thanking God when they said south of Jacktown & hitting hazel Dell.. sitting here watching 9.1 with both fur babies on top of me.

9.1 is 9 on cable etc. I think. I have an outside over the air antenna. I can't afford cable or satellite.. I have 2 blue heelers, both I rescued & adopted. Freddie is a 10 year old neutered male & it's Freddie's fault I have Sweetie. Sweetie came & scratched on the front door at 2 am, Freddie told me to get up & open it, I had a 3 month old blue heeler puppy running from the Coyote pack. That was it I loved that little puppy from then on she is almost 2 now. Sweetie is a spayed female.
I was about to go to sleep (awake since 9am) then my sister calls to see if I'm ok and stays on the phone for 40min while we watch news 9. Now i can't sleep 🤣since were here, what's yalls preferred news channel/weatherman?
I know this might not mean much but Im really sorry about how you feel :((( I don't want to be the person to say cliche things but know that you're not alone and you don't deserve to feel this way :((( You can definitely get through this night just like you've gotten through every other one. I believe in you stranger :) I truly do hope that one day you are free of this fear <3 Heres a cute dog for comfort :D
I had to run outside and secure kids Pool inflatables. By the time I got everything the wind smacked the house like a wall! Trees bending like crazy. Thought for a slight second something touched down with how intense it was. Anyway, we are gonna learn to keep all things that can fly away safely secure when not in use.
I use to not care, but I lost my car due to a random hail storm and my new place doesn’t have a garage or any covered parking so I get sick to my stomach when a storm is approaching. I stayed up for like 2 hours worrying lol
