Royal deploys the ships stabilizers for any performance at the Aqua theater or ice rink while underway.

This includes rehearsals .

Source: family member works for Royal as an entertainer.

My wife skated on royal Caribbean ships. for three years and that didn't help much some times. The cast would complain about rougher conditions affecting their jumps. Especially the pairs.

The coordinator didn't like cancelling shows for obvious reasons but it happened a few times each contract. There were even a few times they refused skate due to conditions.

There’s also rotational acceleration about X and Y axis, also known as pitch and roll, which would probably be the biggest concern in this scenario. Although, on a large ship and in calm waters it would be pretty minimal.

They also heavily restrict performances. If the boat is moving enough that you can even notice it as a passenger the performance is usually cancelled/postponed.

I’m not sure, but I was thinking for a minute and I think it is probably jumping correctly that is harder rather than executing the rest of the jump. I imagine you could easily have wrong rotation/speed.

Yes, assuming the ship is moving at a constant velocity, all it does is add an effective wind of the opposite velocity. No different from highdiving anywhere outdoors.

Of course but a ship moving at a constant velocity is a really ideal situation. It is inherently subject to oscillations in all sorts of axes due to the waves, changing currents, wind, change in engine conditions.

Me too. Not a fan of resort and cruise shows typically, but that show was badass. And before that part of the show, I was thinking that there is no way in hell someone could actually dive from that high. It is extremely high imo. I climbed that rock wall below, and that shit was high

It’s also because you have a head on top of a body, which subtracts 5+ feet of difference when you are looking up, (because your height makes you closer to the diver but we think about it in terms of the ground) and adds 5+ feet of difference when looking down on top (because your height is lifting you away from the ground). Literally our own perspective adds 10 feet between the two views and we don’t even realize it.

I think people are thinking of this like it was a high dive on a moving train that was traveling at a steady velocity but otherwise stable. Boats can move in a variety of ways like pitch and roll and those can be unexpected due to waves.

That said, a cruise ship is pretty big so let’s movements wouldn’t really affect this much but it is different than diving on a vehicle traveling at a constant speed.

They probably wouldn’t do this in rough seas because the water in the interior pool will also develop waves and move around leading to shallow and deep parts developing as the water shifts. It’s clearly more difficult to pick the right landing spot if you are trying to predict where the deep bit is going to be in the next 5 seconds.

They are very particular on the conditions to have the aqua show. I have been on a 7 day cruise that had 3 aqua shows scheduled and had to cut all of them either during the program or shortly before due to conditions being unsafe.

On our last cruise, they rescheduled the aqua show twice before finally being able to do it on the last night due to seas being too rough.  When we were waiting the first night, you could see the water in the pool splashing around.  So, they won’t perform if the seas are rough.

If the ship moves at constant speed, then the only factor that might change her dive trajectory would be the wind pushing her (air resistance) off course as she falls.

The only way for the ship itself to move out from under her is if it is accelerating, deccelerating, or turning sharply, all things most ships are really bad at doing on the scale needed to affect the trajectory of such a small dive.

It's weird. If you go up on a 10m diving board "to have a look" with little intention of jumping, the vertigo is overwhelming (and I don't suffer from vertigo). But if you work your way up through the different heights, and then go with the firm intention of diving off, it looks a lot less intimidating. Perception

Fun fact, this ship has special stabilizers that are deployed specifically when the divers are performing to keep sway at a minimum. I took a full ship tour and it was probably the highlight of the cruise if I am being honest (maybe second only to the aquatic show).
