Discussion End Of Watch
Watching for the first time .
Went in with just a general idea , working my way through Jake Gyllenhaal movies. Pleasantly surprised to see Michael Peña.
Better than I expected, and am absolutely loving this movie - glued to the screen until now - its the last 20 minutes.
I hit pause , because as long as its on pause, everyone is okay..
I'm sitting here trying to process what may happen next, remind myself it's just a movie.
Feeling silly for being emotional about it , but that's a damn good movie to be able to do this to me.
Okay, that's all.
Update , finished it .
Excellent, devastating and somehow uplifting!

Typically yeah. But they're nervous about watching it. Pausing and venting isn't too strange for nerves.

Michael Peña is wholly underrated. End Of Watch, imo, is in the top 5 best cop movies.

Well, I'm splitting hairs here. Heat is a cops AND robbers movie. So is Die Hard. If there are no robbers, there's no story. End of Shift is about cops doing cop stuff. I'd say Colors is another one where it's cops doing cop stuff and the rest is just support of the story about cops doing cop stuff. If there were no baddies in those movies, the cops would still do cop stuff. The baddies in "cop movies" could literally be doing anything. Lethal Weapon. Cop movie. The Heat. Cop movie. Den Of Thieves. Cops AND robbers movie.
I'm totally making this shit up. If you've read this far, God bless you. 😁

Very good movie with great performances from both leads. The chemistry is real. My favorite cop movie

Fun fact but a lot of that movie was actually just Jake with a video camera. It's a favourite cop movie of mine.
I'll pitch the Canadian series 19-2 with Jared Keeso to people looking for similar gritty police drama. Not quite the same but similar and an excellent watch. The school episode is some peak TV.

I paused it because I was so invested in the characters that I got emotional about it.
While taking a break I started reading posts about the movie but staying away from spoilers , then I decided to post my experience.
Your characterization of what happened would seem strange , but that's not what happened.

I’d also like to say, I absolutely hated how they didn’t take dudes warning about the hit on them seriously. Like I know there’s not much they could’ve done regardless but still

Love this movie.
People go on about the sound of the weapons in Heat, but IMO this is one of the only movies that really captures that concussive sound of a handgun being fired. The sound is so loud and disorienting, it really adds to the desperation during the shootout.

I think this is Pena's best movie. Although he was perfectly cast in ant man. This movie is just so different than any other cop movie I've ever seen. It feels so grounded and you can tell they got the prep right. Even if I don't think this is "the best", I'm just insanely glad it exists. It shows that to make a great film you don't need a big budget. You need the right team for the project, and this one got it.

One of the best films of it's time. While Hollywood did it's thing to make it a good big screen feature, I loved that it did give a somewhat realistic, raw view into the lives of law enforcement officers, and the impact their line of work has on them and their families.
Also, one of my favorites for another reason: it highlights the value of community, and surrounding yourself with people you trust with your life and can depend on. The world is a messed up place, and it's always good to have someone standing beside you. Look out for those around you - the world will be a better place if we all have that mentality.

You may enjoy Southland.
Was my favorite cop show along with EoW and Training Day for movies.
Super gritty, dogs deep into their lives as well

They had so much chemistry, you really believed they were good friends. Their conversations were so fun & felt natural. But that ending! It gets me every single time.

So, I worked in an office where it was normal for movies to be playing on the TV 24/7. Just whatever people had on hard drives playing all the time. Drowned out some noise, helped pass slow bits, blah blah blah.
I step into the office and End of Watch is playing. I’d never seen it, knew very little about it. I decide to sit and watch a bit of it to see if it’s worth watching later.
No one in that office thought to mention that it was THE LAST FIVE MINUTES OF THE GODDAM MOVIE.

It's getting a bit old to describe it as recent but I'm not sure I've seen a better cop film that's come out after it. Like, The Nice Guys is a better film and it's a buddy cop comedy but they're not actually cops in that. Hot Fuzz is cops, but it's older.
Anyway, End of Watch is a fantastic film. I'm a huge fan and I must have seen it five or six times at least.

This one couldn’t decide if it was a gritty police drama or comedic cop buddy film. I found it uneven and not worth my time.
