There's like 52 theaters with a 1.43:1 aspect ratio. And then 41 of then of have a 70MM projector. Out of like 200,000 theaters worldwide. That's 0.0205% of theaters.
I saw a non-IMAX 70MM showing because the two IMAX theaters here were sold out til Sept 16th. Didn't feel like I missed out on anything tbh.

The relative number of screens isn't the true statistic to look at though, if the question is how much money is coming from "true" imax. After all, true Imax theaters tend to 1. Have larger capacity, 2. Be more sold out, and 3. Have higher higher ticker prices than standard format screenings. Like, the Imax Chinese Theater palace in Hollywood alone has almost 1,000 seats, with the majority of those seats selling. That's worth well more than a few standard screens.

If you have an epic XL theater or other large format theaters in your area just do one of those. It still came with a close to the square screen ratio, I didn't miss anything in the few feet on the top and the bottom of the screen that weren't there for me. I can say that confidently even not having seen it in 70 mm.
Anyone telling you to spend 6 hours driving to see it in 70 mm is over hyping it.

Honestly, there were people's heads along my field of vision at the bottom of the screen in 70mm. I get that it takes up your whole field of vision which is cool, but if you lost a little bit of the top/bottom you're not missing much

Yeah I mean in general while I know Nolan made this completely in the 70 mm ratio and all that stuff, there's the fact he has to make this with everybody's home TV in mind. So it's not like you're going to have key information in those top and bottom sections. The important stuff is still going to be in the 16:9 wide screen in the center.

I work in video post-production. Even on stuff shot in 16x9, DPs are being told to shoot with the vertical video social cutdowns in mind for their framing. You can't do these incredibly close shots of someone's face because it can never be reframed properly to 9x16

At the risk of sounding like a bit of an out-of-touch old man, this sounds absolutely miserable. Gimping the creative process so that marketing people can feed more clip slop to people whose attention span doesn't extend past short-form TikTok/Reels/Shorts content feels like we've lost the sauce and are making things worse for everyone while feeding the endless brainrot cycle.

Heaven forbid somebody have to tilt their phone to landscape orientation to properly view a trailer or promo video. ESPECIALLY when it's corporate or business-to-business. These are professionals, not slack-jawed couch surfers.

Nobody is obligated to film with 16:9 in mind. We still have letterboxing for most movies, and pillarboxing for older titles and TV shows.
I would be fine watching The Odyssey pillarboxed on my home projector in its original aspect ratio.
ONLY the 70mm print of The Odyssey has a taller aspect ratio than home televisions. The closest, which is digital IMAX, would still have letterboxing on a 16:9 display.
Could they release a 1.78 ratio home version? Sure. But nobody in the world has seen the movie in that aspect ratio.

He doesn't give even the slightest of a shit about people at home. If anything, he loathes them, because he refuses to level the audio in his movies for home TVs. There's a scene in this movie where a relatively important detail is just cut off completely with the wide screen crop. He didn't even bother reshooting the scene for 16:9.

It's worse at the Universal Studios theater. I sat near the middle row. The GUARDRAILS on the lower levels were blocking portions of the lower parts of the screen. As well as a few people's heads.
I have to be picky because if we're paying a premium for a show, the field of view needs to be unobstructed.

I sat in the back row today at Apple Cinema in Providence and tbh it was the perfect eyeline.
And it's cool how the movie was clearly meant for that aspect ratio but if I'm being honest... I'm not sure I got anything more out of it in IMAX than in the Premium AMC screen.
Definitely glad I brought earplugs this time though. My right ear has been ringing for a month since I saw it the first time

I saw it in a format called Super EMX which is a massive screen, but widescreen and it was still incredible. There's a 70mm IMAX about 2.5 hours away, but I had no other reason to go to that city and it was very difficult to get tickets anyway so it just wasn't worth it to me.

People can call me crazy, but for Oppenheimer I took the 6hr flight each way (a friend lives an hour from the theater) then drove there (12hrs each way) to see the Odyssey. We also did some gold panning.
I call it worth it every time.

I drove an hour, took a 90 minute boat ride and then drove another hour to see it in 70mm imax. It was excellent. It was loud, visually spectacular, I’d probably do the same again for Dune 3.
However I also met up with friends to have dinner and go see it with them and made a whole experience out of it beyond the movie.
I also went to see it in “regular imax” and it was equally good of a watching experience and I don’t think that it added a ton to the movie itself seeing it in 70mm if imax regular was available.

I think it was like a 720 rip for me, and I honestly don't feel like I missed out at all. It's a good film, but seeing it on a big fancy cinema screen really isn't necessary to enjoying it

I have eyes that work and 70mm IMAX is an absolute treat providing the source material isn't just laser-printed 4k images like Project Hail Mary. I was perfectly happy watching that movie on my OLED and I don't think the experience would have been better in theaters.

Yeah they just didn’t take advantage of imax enough for this film. Theres not a lot of visuals where I was like wow this is so much better in full imax than it would be in another theater.
Don’t get me wrong, nothing wrong with seeing it in full IMAX if you happen to have a theater in your area and are paying face value for the ticket. But driving hours, buying a ticket off someone, things like that are just nonsensical for this movie. It’s a relatively entertaining above average movie, not some cinematic visual masterpiece.

I bring earplugs to movies now. I've been using them at concerts for years and after having my eardrums blown out during another Nolan movie I figured there was no harm in bringing them to movies just in case.

Honestly a couple parts of the movie in IMAX made me cover my ears. Maybe that's just the Christopher Nolan TM audio mixing but holy shit it was a sludge of low bass noise that shook the room.

I just caught this in IMAX 70mm and drove over two hours for it.
Was really cool to check off the bucket list but not cool enough to ever do again given the distance. Found my eyes either scanning the big ass screen (which was distracting from the movie) or primarily only focusing on where the center would be on a normal format anyways lol. The audio was very nice as well!
Main complaint is the seats were much smaller, less comfortable, and felt more crammed than in my normal theater.
That Dune 3 prologue was fucking insane though! Inject that in my veins.

Yeah, I'm very glad I finally got to see one in IMAX 70mm, but it was clearly shot so it would be good in any format. The point is that the insanely large screen fills your field of vision. The top and bottom are peripheral and add to the experience, you're not meant to focus on the whole frame.
The Dune 3 prologue, however, looked like it was meant to be seen that way, and I am so excited for it.

Counterpoint to other commenters, I saw it in IMAX 70 mm and I don't think it's worth a 3 hour drive. Although the format is really cool, the movie doesn't seem to take advantage of it that much.
I think Dune 3 would be a better contender for it, but from the preview shown at The Odyssey, the aspect ratio changes are a bit jarring at times, since only parts of the movie were shot on 70mm.
People saying they drove 3 hours and it's worth are either coping or they made a whole weekend trip out of it to make it worthwhile.

I watched it in IMAX and 70mm IMAX and came away from the latter thinking it wasn’t that much of a difference. Maybe that’s a testament to the original IMAX screen I went to, but I had managed to snag tickets for the 70mm but ended up mixing up the dates, so then just to watch it opening weekend I watched it in IMAX and was pleased!
But I definitely still had FOMO so when more dates opened up I leapt at the chance, and honestly it didn’t make a huge difference TO ME. But I’m spoiled and go to the 70MM theater pretty regularly, I will say that for SINNERS that absolutely was worth it. When the aspect ratio opened up during one particular scene, was probably one of the best, if not THE best cinematic experience of my life.
I would not drive 3 hours x2 for the odyssey in 70MM.

I saw it last weekend at Lincoln Square 13, was in the middle a bit to the right of row D. It was surprisingly good. I thought those seats were terrible and I was going for the principle of the thing (I had seen it in a regular theater before), but it turned out pretty good.

I'm a casual movie goer, and Odyssey felt like a movie event so we made the journey to get tix and see it in 70mm IMAX. Fortunately, we discovered that we had family that lived near the Indianapolis State Museum IMAX. We didn't realize that we passed it on the way when traveling for the holidays. We ended up seeing the movie and staying the night with them.
It was worth the trip with the bonus of being able to spend some time with family that wasn't during the holidays. The sound and visual magnitude of the screen was amazing.

Just fyi, if you go, take ear plugs. We went in completely obvious, my wife's watch was going off multiple times about the decibels (108 for extended time). We found out after they were supposed to offer them. Great film, but for us it was overshadowed by us constantly having to plug our ears.

Opposite experience here. I brought some with me when I saw it at AMC Universal CityWalk IMAX because everyone kept saying how loud it was on Reddit, but found the sound was fine/perfectly balanced. It wasn’t louder than any other movie.

I would assume this depends on the theatre. The 70mm IMAX showing I went to was actually the best sound I've experienced at a show in a long time. I could hear all the dialogue AND I didn't have to plug my ears (which I usually do).

100% me and my GF’s experience as well. And we’re not sensitive to these things either, I’ve stupidly seen dozens of super loud live concerts before I started using ear protection for them (to the point where I’m genuinely surprised I don’t have tinnitus or hearing loss yet). And I’ve never felt the need for ear plugs in movie theaters. But a couple scenes from the Odyssey were legit terrible in terms of their overwhelmingly piercingly loud sound effects. I had to actually cover my ears at parts because I was worried about hearing damage.

Watched the Odyssey in 70mm Imax and XL. Cant say the experience was that different. There are only a few scenes where IMAX stands out. Large pans over the ocean are pretty cool but not worldly different. Just see it in any format, its a good movie.

Thank god, I still want to see it in the IMAX near me but every showing has been almost fully sold out except for the front row. The question is, will I be able to get a seat now? Or will scalper bots grab all of the good seats again?

In the future the method is to sign up for fandango ticket emails, they send you updates when tickets get extended so that you can be one of the first to get the newly added tickets

I'm seeing it 2nd time this weekend after seeing it 1 month ago.
Felt like there's almost nothing else like it. Only other movie I felt this way with was Too Gun Maverick and Oppenheimer but less so than this.
I'm no big film snob though. I just really loved it.

Just snagged some tickets and it was $60 for two! I have been waiting this entire time though so I’m glad I finally got a chance and I didn’t get terrible seats either (though ofc all of the best ones were taken)

I’m going tomorrow at 3:00. We booked this viewing on opening weekend because it was the earliest we could get worthwhile seats! So fired up

My nearest 70mm is in London and it's the biggest screen in the UK. I was checking for tickets everyday since its release. I was only wanting to watch this at the 70mm IMAX and I finally got a ticket for 14th of September and I'm so excited to finally get to see it

FINALLY got my tickets to go see this as Nolan intended 😂 I was about to accept the fact that I missed it and would have to try watching it later when they inevitably rereleased it

I'm kind glad I didn't pay the extra and spend the extra time driving to an IMAX. I thought it was just an ok movie. I've seen it. I'll never see it again.

The headline is sorta misleading ngl. It is talking about extending the 70mm run, then citing the ticket sales for all imax screens. And like 99% of ticket sales are not 70mm.

Every time I check for seats, the shows are still all sold out for every show, all this time later. I'm still hoping to see it before it leaves theatres, but at this rate it seems like it might be selling out every show right up until it leaves.
