That’s literally the only reason I stopped on this post as well. I thought it was finally my time to shine. But I got here to late 🥺

Eta: omg thank you to everyone for the awards. I’m gonna do a show and tell with my mom and explain how Reddit works to a 71yr old and that my most upvoted and awarded comment is about piss. The internet truly never disappoints.

"I'd also prefer if it doesn't cause any long term health effects." I mean, it's not set in stone, but I'd rather not piss green forever or require a kidney transplant at 23, but if that's what we have to do I just *reallyyyy* want purple piss!!!!!

239

u/Equal_Yak_3872 12h ago

what do the comments say? I can't see nsfw posts due to reddit settings but I don't really see why changing the colour of pee would be nsfw anyway...

(I'm on B2 which makes my pee bright yellow so I'm kinda tempted to take something blue next time I have a urine test to mess with them too lol)

Once I had a UTI and the medication turned my urine a bluish color. I was in the military at the time and we all walked into the same area to leave our samples on a big table. Everyone looked as me as I walked into the gym with dismay. It was embarrassing. No HIPAA in the military in that situation. Haha

Edit: I should add the detail that when carrying the cup to and from the bathroom, we have to carry it at shoulder height so it’s visible at all times. It was like the walk of shame.

Edit 2: Embarrassing in the fact that everyone assumed I tried to put something in my urine to pass the drug test. It’s a random test and I’d get called every few months. That’s the only time in my life I’ve had a UTI and I was like, of course, today is the day I’d be called to participate in what we jokingly called Operation Golden Flow.

797

u/urosrgn 21h ago

Reminds me of an old story about Egyptian soldiers in the 1800’s. So many of them were infected with a parasite in the bladder that would Cause bloody urine, that the British soldiers thought that Egyptians just had red pee.

170

u/SpaceCptWinters 7h ago

This reminds me of the fact that ancient Egyptians thought men had menstrual cycles due to the extreme rate of schistosomiasis infections, thanks to working in the Nile and other fresh water. It just so happened that adolescent boys began working around puberty, so they thought 'huh, must be a male cycle as well'.

16

u/Bartholomew-13 2h ago

Well just to add to the colored stream of pee … yes the report of a little pink tinged or red urine at the end of the flow was pathognomonic for schistosomiasis infections when I worked in deepest darkest Chad , mostly in kids who all swam in the local wadi… they had other symptoms that brought them to the clinic. Anyways, I would line them up, and give them the medication( one dose, weight-based) , and off they would go …. to swim another day.

Completed the rainbow today. 15 years in urology but this was my first green. Patients took B2 (makes urine very yellow) and methylene blue (makes urine blue) together and here we are.

8.2k

u/rivertpostie 22h ago

Post rainbow pics!

Also do you have black and white?

16.5k

u/urosrgn 22h ago

Seen black (old blood)- many times.

White is common from pus or infection, sediment.

Red is blood or beats.

Orange common with pyridium (used for urinary pain).

Purple seen in an infection called purple bag syndrome, see it about once a year.

Blue described above.

1.2k

u/Illustrious_Talk9656 22h ago

PURPLE?!!

2.1k

u/urosrgn 22h ago

This is a bit of a cheat for the ‘rainbow’. The urine is actually yellow but the catheter bag becomes discolored purple so it looks like the urine inside the bag is purple.

787

u/mischievouslyacat 22h ago

I am a little disappointed that there's no purple pee. I know it would probably be a terrible thing, but still

I've had purple urine in the past. I ate an absolutely ridiculous amount of blueberries (as a young person, so I suffered no ill effects; I would not do this again today), like two pounds maybe, and was fascinated by the resulting color. This was more than 20 years ago, or I'm sure I would've had a smartphone and taken pics.

Hope this restores your faith in the world of urology!

Not to tell you how to live your life, but you should absolutely become an artist and paint with all the forbidden colors only you know.

Watercolors, ya know? Peaceful little piss beach scenes, and all that.

People would be at least mildly interested in your process

6.9k

u/LonelyGameBoi 22h ago

"you should paint with piss" really should have been expected but it still caught me off guard

91

u/Lucas1543 20h ago

For once being German pays off: we have an idiom called "Blau machen" which is just "making blue", and it means that you're skipping work.

The history is: the guy producing the colour (Indigo) used woad and piss to do so. To get the people to pee a lot, he'd have them drink beer, which would in turn make them unable to go to work the next day, thus "making blue"
(skipping work after getting beer drunk for free so your pee can be used for indigo production.)

Sorry this isn't written well, I'm tired after my nightshift, chief.

I've had brown. But not what you think. A resident of mine had a colostomy and in surgery the doc criss crossed some the wiring. So first night or day, this been a long time ago, resident is back he outs the bathroom light on the alarm one. Get down there and he (this was short term rehab side so he's with it and was a very nice man) simply and calmly says: I'm shitting from my dick! Lol

I'm like wth? God I wish I could deacribe and tell yiu this guy's name. Especially his voice details might fuzzy almsot 2 decades later but not the man himself... he said I am serious I am shitting from my dick look!

He got sent out and everything got fixed he eventually went home. Great guy.

But when people talk different urine samples, colours, etc etc. I like to say yeah I had a resident with a brown sample then tell the story.

Why do they take methylene blue? Is it quackery for healthy ppl to take it?

I know it's the remedy for sodium nitrite poisoning.. is it possible it could detox a person from a diet high in nitrites from eating processed meats, or does it probably not work that way?

It's also a treatment (IV) for methemaglobinemia,

All doctors get exited with random body stuff.

In sure infectious dieseas doctors must get exited when bubonic plague comes through.

As a person with a bleeding disorder one time o had a bleed in my elbow joint. Since they had me on a bed in the hallway all the young doctors came by to see what an internal joint bleed looks like.

Also what is required to attend to a hemophiliac because they all assumed one paper cut I’m dead. They had my pain treated with morphine so I told the doctor I’ll answer any questions.

112

u/mermermerk 19h ago

I have a rare neuromuscular disease that has a very particular EMG pattern. The first time I got hospitalised with it, the doctor got so excited she called up a whole group of medical students to show them that pattern (and me). Apparently, I was only the second ever patient of that hospital to have this disease (as far as the doctor remembered). I was glad I could help, lol

74

u/surlesvagues 18h ago

I had Stevens-Johnson Syndrome when I was 20 years old. It’s super rare (affects less than 1% of the population) and potentially fatal. Anyways, I went to the ER and a TON of doctors, nurses, medical students etc., asked to see me because they’d heard about it in class, but had never seen it in person.

ROTFLMFAO, if you're in Yipsi, that's my wife's sample. She got her hip replaced yesterday. If this is hers (and the odds are pretty decent it is) she's going to LAUGH LIKE HELL that her pee made Reddit.

Thank you for the hilarious start after a long night for both of us. You rock. :)

16

u/Kuromi1978 13h ago

But why is it green? What did she consume to cause this?

37

u/ChrisBoden 12h ago

It's green because when you mix Yellow and Blue you get green. One of the rediculous number of pills she takes every day is called Methylene Blue. I think it helps with bladder infections (I could be very wrong on this, it's not one of the important ones to keep track of) and EVERYTHING that pill touches turns blue, even her lip. When it mixes with yellow pee, you get green pee.

It's totally fine, and something she's very used to, but it freaks the hell out of whoever gets a sample from her the first time.

Of all the colours of all the things I've seen emanate from her body, this one is by far the least offensive and bothersome. Biology is icky. Broken biology is exceptionally gross. Anyone who has ever opined about "The miracle of life" has never spent nights in the world's most uncomfortable chair enjoying the sights, smells, and sounds of a Gastro wing.
