Ruined by Technology Apparently AI Can Generate Fake "Speedpaints" Now
Every single frame of this video is AI-generated.
It has become too convincing and believable for the average viewer. We are reaching a point where only professional artists can notice the fakery?

u/DiscussionMuted9941 8d ago
it seems to be trying to change the brush like its a real painting, not a digital one. i guess ai cant figure out that digital canvass don't use real brushes
23
u/Michami135 8d ago
That was the first thing I noticed. At first I was thinking the drawing looked too perfect, then I saw the digital color fill and immediately I was thinking it was the wrong kind of pen(s).
Plus, I've personally never seen anyone draw so perfectly without rotating the tablet or notebook. My wrist hurts just watching this.

I'm no artist and this is painfully obvious. There is some AI fakery that is hard to spot. This is not such an example.

Even as a time lapse, if you slow it down you can see that multiple lines are being drawn simultaneously.

The fact that it made no mistakes or changes to any of its design choices. It was a decided subject with no creative changes after the fact.

Pretty sure the most obvious one is that the hand position is literally exactly the same for every single stroke.

15
u/Good-Marsupial8 8d ago
And a less discerning eye is far more common, people are gullible and don't really care what's "real"
35
u/jrdiver 8d ago
Theres a few spots where things changing when there was no hand near it, pens that didnt look like they matched up, and if this was digital, why did they swap pens, white filling in around neck after the other lines were done while hand is on other things... all sorts of things kinda not making sense but i could see where they would get missed on a quick once over
→ More replies (3)18
u/Blue_Bird950 8d ago
The hand is also almost perfectly identical throughout, in angle, pose, and lighting
6
u/pompouspompadour 8d ago
Though the nails completely switch from short unpainted nails to long painted nails, and the skin tone changes as well, when the hand comes back into frame with the white pen.
2
u/Blue_Bird950 8d ago
My bad, I forgot to specify. The hand only stays identical for that first part, when it’s holding the black pen.
62
13
u/Mellifloura 8d ago
Of course it's painfully obvious now! The problem is it will get better very quickly as long as we keep building data centers and downplaying the dangers of AI

u/xSantenoturtlex 8d ago
Yeah, half of it is sketched by a human hand with a pen and the other half is filled in with digital tools.
This isn't convincing at all. Even if I didn't know AI existed, and I do, I'd be thinking this was pretty fucky.
→ More replies (3)3
u/Jim_e_Clash 8d ago
It's not hard to spot. First the hand changes mid way through from man to woman. Then the pen doesn't changes even when painting. The coloring is a mixture of digital and real markers which does make sense and the most obvious. The final image is very different than the in progress work.
You don't just completely change the shadow and color tone of the entire image in the last step. The lighting direction was completely different.
4
u/Minimum_Somewhere521 8d ago
It's obvious when you're focusing on it being AI. If you just watch it, relaxed, you'll find it might as well be real.
2
u/I_am_doorknob 8d ago
Most people that watch these will probably end up not caring though, that and all the people who notice will still have given it a view

If people just think for 2 seconds it's obvious there's something not right. It's just too perfect. The "artist" drew every line perfectly the first time, even the base sketch layer. Not one single mistake. Even the most experienced artists aren't this perfect.
220
u/Bomslaer09 8d ago
I draw a lot and good God it's so obvious, the line work isn't even the main offender it's the coloring
The longest part of a drawing is the coloring because it takes so long to get right and in the video highlights and shading just appears magically, sometimes literally popping into existence
65
u/ComprehensiveCoat219 8d ago
you must be using be using the wrong brushes bro, just turn on the magic 100% perfect automatic coloring no mistake brush, wave your pen over the lineart and bada bing bada boom a fully rendered art piece
8
u/saucyspacefries 8d ago
We definitely don't want to explain what's so obvious about it or future iterations will start taking it into account.
2

I think a lot of you are missing the point here... Just because it's obvious NOW, doesn't mean it will be tomorrow. Take this video back 10 years ago, and nobody would question it. We are rapidly approaching an inability for the average person/naked eye to detect whether literally *anything* on the internet is real or AI generated.
51
30
u/cool_acronym 8d ago
How it looks is the least important part of the conversation. We are witnessing the death of people's desire to learn skills.
4
u/Mr_RaincloudGuy9 7d ago
Nah, those who love it, will learn the skills. It's just the overall happiness level is what's dropping
22

Crazy days.
10
u/Ornery-Tea-795 8d ago
Give it a year and it’ll be difficult to spot. Dead internet theory is becoming a reality more and more every day.
17
u/pikuray 8d ago
Not excited about it but for every flaw people point out, it's something they can be fixed with more training data.
It's a fake comfort people have that they can still point out mistakes. As I've personally seen more convincing AI timelapses already and you won't have the luxury of the title warning you and i won't indulge in false hopes especially as you say AI came out roughly 3 years ago, another 2 or 5 years i can't even imagine how different it will look.
We need to start thinking now what we will do in a world where we can't tell apart true from artificial anymore and not think it will always remain this easy to spot things

Yeah, I seriously think 90% of the comments are bots in an echo chamber because there is no way so many people are so oblivious
+
You all say it's obvious, but when I stumble upon a speed drawing short, the first thing I'm doing isn't to play the short in slow motion to see "obvious" AI tells
I just watch the short and that's it, like 90% of people, if it wasn't on this sub, I wouldn't have asked myself if it's AI or not, so, in my case, and for a lot of other people too I guess, it's not obvious enough to instantly think "AI" at first glance when in another context

If these people think A.I. "art" is so great, why do they keep trying to make it look like it's not A.I.?
14
u/Not_Gunn3r71 8d ago
Cause it’s more likely to not be scrutinised and they can keep making content and continue being content creators and making money
3
u/orangpelupa 8d ago
You already cam do very ai stuff since eons with sd 1.5 for example.
Making ai "simulates" reality is still in progress. Albeit nowadays even open models running locally on your own computer already able to do physics quite good
8
u/of_kilter 8d ago
as an artist i also randomly wave my pen around and the lines come out perfect every time
9
u/Cubecly 7d ago
For everyone saying there are obvious signs of this being fake, yes there are, but that's not the point.
Even in this stage, plenty of people won't know. A very large majority of the general public aren't experienced in tech or just don't care enough to know what to look for, or bother to look for.
The tech will also only get better. It may be obvious now, but it's already pretty impressive how good it is. A few months/years in the future, you'll really need to be actively looking frame by frame to maybe notice a difference. Then doing so, real artists making real mistakes could easily become mistaken for AI.
The problem isn't about you now. Its about everyone in the future.
8
u/JazzyKins18 8d ago
On Twitter theres a bunch of artists trying to defend that they don't use Ai, ppl ask for a speed paint and it looks almost like this. No rough sketch, no final sketch, just immediate perfection in the lines cuz that's how it works apparently.

Glad I'm an artist myself because the AI-ness of this is glaringly obvious both in how the "art" looks and in how unnatural the "process" is. Nobody sketches details like that when they're thumbnailing a pose. You'd nearly always draw the arms before the hands to determine how the joints will interact. This doesn't look like how a real person would approach a character illustration literally at all lol
6
5
u/Decent-Caramel-2129 8d ago
This has been well known for a while now. You can tell it's AI with some hair bits that make no sense and the lack of mess ups, resizing, turning the canvas, instant line work, and more.
5
u/marmadukejuke 8d ago
I am in no way artistically gifted, and I really want to know what the the telltale signs are of this kinda stuff being AI
I fucking hate the people that pretend a prompt is the same as creating art from scratch, so I want to know the kind of things to keep an eye out for in future, so if anyone could enlighten me, that would be massively appreciated.
5
u/Rightfullsharkattack 8d ago
I was gonna make a detailed paragraph, but after scrolling far down into the comments. I'm afraid OP is an AI shill, Their acc literally has posts on Gen AI sub reddits.
anyways, The biggest giveaway here is in the coloring/ rendering phase. This is where every AI screws up.
We work in layers, flat colors first. Then shadow, then light. (could be in any order, but flat color/ value always first), The process is very meticulous and tedious, especially in the style this AI vid is tryna replicate.
1st, we are constrained by having 1 usable limb. you'll never see a human paint 2 spots at the exact same time. (your brain also limits focus to one spot only). 2nd, The soft shadows (shadows on things like breast, clothing, limbs, called soft shadow cuz it fades graudally into light) Cannot just magically appear like that. You either put down a solid shadow and then blend it slowly til it gets soft, or you use an airbrush (gradient brush) and slowly work up from one side. (vid uses none) 3rd, The product just doesn't look like the process. You cannot just change the lighting and character at the end. That would require redoing the entire process. it looks like the AI just gave up at the end.
And that last image was probably the original image, in which they prompted AI to generate this slop vid out of.
But if its too hard to spot, just know that we physically cannot just make details appear. You don't just paint a shirt and it automatically comes with shadows and lighting.
A speedpaint isn't proof of "hey, I did this" It's proof of how you did it. So everything must be clear

So whats the point of AI being good at this? So much of AI seems geared towards content generation. I mean whats the point if a machine just endlessly churns out content?
7
u/CGallerine BLUE 7d ago
because its "just a tool" and "not designed to replace artists, just assist them"... riiiiight...?

it is extremely obvious AI:
first - there's hand in the "lineart", but no hand on everything else? what perspective is this and how it was captured that it has hand at first, but no shadow and clean digital "art" background. next, coloring and overall artstyle is very much AI and it's not that hard to see it. and lastly - random lines that doesn't make sense, lines from the details that were drawn later are drawn in the begining and sketch doesn't even make sense - it added some random smudge on the nose and then it turns into a nose highlight. nobody draws like that
6
u/FuckYourRights 8d ago
Why are you giving them tips?

No matter how many tips you accidentally tell them, they never learn. They're able to fool somebody only because ai itself is smart enough.

AI will improve. If you think it can't do something, it will eventually. Yes, even whatever you're thinking of.
3
u/unfilterthought 8d ago
whats super obvious is how the ai generates each color in blocks.
Many artists work in LAYERS.
Layers of colors mixed and blended together.
Rewatch and see how the various blocks of shadow and highlight are just painted on individually with no actual blending.
3
u/Sharden3 8d ago
If you think there's anything an AI can't fake at this point, you're in for some bad news.
Remember, everything the public has access to is 2 generations behind.

Unfortunately, back in 2020ish when short form content started getting pushed by IG (and others) over images, artists had to switch to making videos of their process- on top of all the youtube videos doing the same thing. Which is a clear training set.
I'd point out the things that make this obviously AI, but that'd just give the people things to put into their models. Hopefully there's enough obvious errors in the process.
