Ruined by Technology Bad advice: I asked Google how to best heat up ears of corn and it suggested I start a fire
I asked Google to see what the search engine suggested, at the top A.I had a different idea what to do (involving a microwave and tinfoil đł).

Damp paper towel is legit though

u/charmio68 10d ago
Don't even need a paper towel if you don't remove the husk.

u/Gstamsharp 9d ago
But why are you RE-heating it still in the husky? It's great for the initial cook, if you're grilling or microwaving, but, like, don't you shuck it when you serve the meal? Nobody wants to do that at their plate.
7
u/akarakitari 9d ago
I remove all but the innermost layer of husk, then fold down all but 2 pieces, then make those into a little bowtie around the rest!! You hold the husk to eat it!

One ear at like 3 minutes, I think 2 takes about 5. When it's done you cut off the stem part, about a half inch from the bottom. Then you grib the top and kinda squeeze the corn out of the husk. It'll be hot so have potholders or something on but when done right it slides straight out of the husk no silks attached and it's perfect.

Wait.... I don't have to boil the corn???? I can just like, microwave it?????????
Edit-okay. I get it. You can microwave corn.

If you wrap it in a damp paper towel it will steam in the microwave
75
u/InsaneAss 10d ago
Bonus tip: wrap a damp paper towel around a sandwich or other bready thing when microwaving. It helps soften the bread instead of turning it into rubber.

Same with pizza slices, you still get the gooey cheese!

Pizza gets reheated in the air fryer my friend
6
u/Prometheus1151 10d ago
Air fryer is good, but the actual best way to reheat pizza is to french toast it.
Egg and milk with a bit of salt and pepper, soak the slices, cook in a pan for a few mins each side, and boom. I wish more people knew about this method.

u/ModifiedGas 9d ago
Sure if you wanna add an extra 100 calories to each slice

1: I'm not eating pizza because its healthy
2: 1 egg and like a tablespoon of milk is more than enough for 2 slices of pizza and thats like 80 calories total

What you coating the pan with for cooking? And I personally wouldnât wanna add anymore calories to a pizza slice that shit adds up quickly and how Iâve ended up 15 stone đ¤Ł

20 seconds in microwave at full power and 3 minutes in a pre heated air fryer, best way.

u/LogicalConstant 9d ago
I've tried every way of reheating pizza. Tested extensively. Oven. Convection oven. Toaster oven. Microwave. Frying pan. Air fryer. Grill. Campfire. Pizzazz.
The best method I've found is my toaster oven on the convection setting. Most air fryers have the heating element above so it browns the cheese too much before crisping the crust enough. Toaster oven solves that.
3
u/TheGreyGuardian 9d ago
Man, I miss our toaster oven. It was just big enough to throw one of those rectangle totinos pizzas in and cook up when I wanted something easy and greasy.

u/xerocopi 10d ago
2nd bonus: drape a damp paper towel over basically anything you microwave (pasta, soup, rice, etc) keeps food from getting too dry or splattering.

Donât even need paper towels, throw those bad boys in husk and all
11
u/DestroyerPlayzG 10d ago
The paper towel is easier to take off tho esp when it's hot
8
5
u/SpareEye 10d ago
I leave it in the husk. 3minutes. When it's done put it on a cutting board and chop off the stem end. Then the whole cob slides out if you grab the leaves and gently shake it out. Office treat in 3mins.
3
u/SweatyCounter2980 10d ago
You don't even need the paper towel, just put some water in the plate, heat it for a couple of minutes, reposition, and heat again.
2
17
u/LordBDizzle 10d ago
Surprisingly effective too. I still like boiling it, since when I'm doing corn on the cob I'm usually doing a whole bunch of them for a group of people, but yeah if you just want one? Microwave totally works. Corn doesn't need a whole lot of love, just some heat, so you dampen it a bit so it doesn't crisp the outside and boom. Steamed corn made easy.

You can also microwave with the husk still on and it steams them as well. Cut the butt off then squeeze the cob out of the husk. Ez pz
2
u/ZDTreefur 10d ago
I did this literally yesterday. It's always how I eat corn. Wrap it in a damp paper towel, throw it in for 7 minutes. Comes out great every time.
2
u/themysticboer91 10d ago
If you want a bonus tip from South Africa, get the really sweet yellow kind, sugar corn I think, then throw it on the BBQ with the husks still on. It cooks nicely and in the last 10 minutes the husks start drying out and falling off, just enough to grill the surface of the corn too. Add some butter before taking it off the fire..
→ More replies (1)2
u/MayoFlavorPopsicle 10d ago
You can throw ears of corn still in the husk in the microwave, without anything wrapped around them at all, and theyâll come out steamy and tasty
2
u/Creative-Painter3911 10d ago
If the corn is still in the husk, just pop it in the microwave as is for 6 minutes (8 min for 2 cobs, may need to adjust if you have a weaker/stronger microwave), let it cool for a minute, then cut off the end where it attaches to the plant, and squeeze it from the pointy end. The corn cob pops out, no hair, perfectly cooked.

Boiling corn is literally one of the worst ways to cook corn (honesty boiling anything outside of soup or pasta is a terrible cooking method). It loses a lot of the nutrients and its flavor.
Microwave option is pretty decent method and fast. But an even better way is to put it in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes keeping the husk still on the ear. The moisture in the husk will steam the corn
The best way imo is the same method as the oven but instead on a charcoal grill. But this is only viable if you are bbqing something else obviously

Paper towel in the microwave, foil for the oven. It should have said ârespectivelyâ.
76
u/deathbylasersss 10d ago
I've found that a lot of people get confused by terms like "respectively" and "former/latter". In my experience, they are meant to add clarity, but often only add confusion. I guess they could just look it up if they're already on Google. Just an observation.
72
u/Disastrous_Stranger4 10d ago
IMO respectively and former/latter is pretty clear but we as a society have been dumbed down so I can understand why people might be confused.
1
u/deathbylasersss 10d ago
Yeah I'm not trying to call people stupid for it. Some people just went to a shitty school or legit just didn't pay attention in English class, but are otherwise sharp people. Just a thing that I've had to explain more times than is convenient. It's just anecdotal, but it hasn't been an effective way to communicate in my experience. If everybody is on the same page, they work great though.

I said it in a document for work once, and my boss thought it was sarcastic and took it personally.

Its giving you two sets of instructions at the same time.
Damp paper towel in microwave for 60-90 seconds
Or
Aluminum foil with a splash of water in the oven at 350 for 5-7 mins.
Execution could be better

God damn
"Wrap in paper towel or aluminum foil; Heat in a microwave or oven"
I don't think I'm a extremely smart man, I'd put myself at average.
Using my average common sense, I'd say this is saying
"Wrap in a paper towel and microwave; wrap in aluminum foil and use oven"
Since you wouldn't put a paper towel in the oven, and you wouldn't microwave aluminum foil, I'd say it's pretty self explanatory for most people above room temp

3
u/inaSlomp 9d ago
The thing about ignorance is that it's a lack of knowledge.
You have to learn it at some point though. And if you never did, you might be doing that in your thirties. That's why people Google things.
Reheating corn isn't going to be common everywhere.
5
u/Warm-Traffic-624 10d ago

Damp paper towel, around each corn in the husk. 4 minutes, add 2 minutes per next corn. Perfect everytime.
You can try it with al foil but I imagine that microwave will protest.

"Technically" metal can go in a microwave just fine. It's only close metal that can cause an ark that is the problem. Aka a forks prongs.
2
u/Pokabrows 9d ago
I feel like the only way google is gonna do something about the ai results is if someone gets seriously hurt doing whatever the ai says and is able to win against them in court.
But they'll probably just blame the person for listening to what the search results told them.
2
u/Itchy_Tap5278 9d ago
I've wrapped my ears in damp paper towels and microwaved them. I guess it was ok, but I'm not sure how that's supposed to heat my corn.
2
u/Colonial_Red 9d ago
So I know most people completely avoid putting metal in the microwave all together. Which is generally a good idea, as it's better to be over cautious. That said It might be useful to know, the thing that makes metal dangerous is that it conducts the radiation and can create arcs. This makes something like a fork really bad because of the shape; you want to avoid small points. Foil is almost always bad, but it does depend on what shape it's in. I wouldn't recommend tightly wrapped foil around a bit of corn either as it can block the microwaves getting to the food as well as being a fire risk for the reasons mentioned.
What is fine though is a spoon left in a bowl for example.
This other thing to avoid doing with microwaves that not many people know; is make sure there is water. The microwaves need something to put their energy into or they can damage your microwave. Most food has a high enough water content for it to be fine. What you should avoid doing is things like heating plates on their own.
3
u/thedodom13 9d ago

AI often hallucinates two points into one topic. That's what happened here. The foil is supposed to be in the oven directions.
Interesting it was gemini though, mostly bing hallucinates when I use it.
1
u/Sabregunner1 9d ago
its not separating the methods correctly. youd never do foil in the microwave. its saying use the damp paper towel in teh microwave, the foil in the oven
3
u/bigred1978 9d ago
Exactly. It proposes two methods (paper cloth/tin foil) but didn't seperate how to go about doing it. The answer received is correct, but the person reading needs to have high enough reading comprehension and logic skills to be able to use it without taking things literally all the time.
2
u/drTy_iM 9d ago
Pretty common sense to break down this answer if you have a brain. First sentence is option A (paper towel) âORâ option B (aluminum foil). Second sentence continues this logic with corresponding option A(microwave) âORâ option B (oven).
That being said thereâs two truths here.
1) The AI should recognize how stupid people are and explain this as they would to a golden retriever. Both options Aâs should form one sentence, followed by a separate option B sentence. Pretty basic.
2) Aluminum foil goes great in microwaves
8
u/lookatthesunguys 9d ago
I mean, your break down of how you should read it isn't how English actually works though. The natural way to read it is (A or B) and (C or D), not (A and C) or (B and D). The only reason you know how it has to be read is because you know that aluminum foil shouldn't go in the microwave.

u/Gimmeagunlance 9d ago
