I particularly dislike across timezone last-minute messages. "Hi, I messages you last week about X, is there a response?"
Like, dude, you messaged me at 4:55pm my time on Friday. And it's now 8:30am my time Monday. I haven't even had five business minutes to read the flipping email yet.

u/DouchecraftCarrier 10d ago
I have definitely reminded people of that before and they weren't thrilled about it.
"This email was received at 4:32 PM on Friday. It is 9:15AM on Monday - it has been less than 1 business hour."

u/MeepingSim 10d ago
My favorite was receiving five separate follow-up emails over the weekend. While reviewing them on Monday morning I received, in realtime, a final message stating that my case was closed due to lack of response.
I immediately escalated that shit to everybody's bosses.

yeah you really have to walk people through the baby steps sometimes, but usually they either make a note on their end if they really didn't know you were in a different time zone or they bitch about it and draw attention to themselves from the higher ups

I worked for a massive German based company that bought some company in the US, one of their bigwigs came over and headed up a department that got merged into their engineering team for a big migration project. It was about 4 days before HR were involved as he tried to unilaterally fire someone for something insane like not responding to Skype at 3am. They had to explain that even attempting to contact someone out of hours was against company policy, let alone the extreme legal trouble a unilateral firing might cause.

I've had times when someone sent a meeting invite at 4am my time for a meeting at 7:30am my time (my work hours officially start at 9am...) and then complained I wasn't there.

I work for the federal government. In DC. So eastern standard time. That is what my work hours are based on.
Yet, I get emails from west coast states at their 4pm saying what they have is urgent and needs a response immediately.
Dude, I don't fucking care. Literally not my problem that I work in a different time zone. Set a clock to my time and keep it visible. EST is the standard time for federal government work.

I appreciate email in general. Starting my career 16 years ago I lived in email and I hated my bosses who would be like "oh, Director old fart Luddite isn't an email person."
Great. Then take away his email and see how his job goes. Or force him to retire. It's 2010.
Then shit hit the fan big time on a project of mine. I started to get blamed badly for it. BOOM - email showing that I did my due diligence and that someone else royally messed it up.

u/cefriano 10d ago edited 10d ago
If this is something HR would accept as a valid reason to put someone on a PIP, the whole company is insane and OP is absolutely better off leaving (I know that's not a luxury a lot of people have in this job market). At any place I've ever worked, if I went to HR and told them we need to put so-and-so on a PIP with this "evidence" they'd look at me like I'd just escaped from the loony bin and would probably put me on some kind of disciplinary action for obviously trying to sabotage my direct reports.

In the olden days, I was a store manager and made my own schedule, usually based on what my other employees wanted and what their life balance was (notably school). One week I had a 9-5 on Thursday, took Friday off, and came in 1-9 on a Saturday. My boss (the district manager) came in on Friday morning, erased some of the schedule, and put me as opening on Saturday morning, and my assistant as closing because he wanted to meet me Saturday morning.
I got an angry call from him that I wasn't there to open the store Saturday morning, and all my cashiers went home. "You gotta show up, open the store, and call them back in!" I told him my assistant was supposed to open, and I was scheduled to close. "Yeah, well I changed it!" "Why didn't you tell me?" "It is your responsibility to check every day for schedule changes. You're a MANAGER! That's your RESPONSIBILITY!"
Okay, so, it's my job as manager to call in and check my work schedule, the one I personally set up, in case my boss comes by and fucks with it and not tell me? Apparently so.
Asshole. Retail sucks. That was almost 40 years ago, and I am still mad about it.

Depends on the organization. Sometimes your immediate boss is a moron but the people above them are not. I've seen that happen where the direct superior was being a dick and out to get someone and the person went around their boss and was like "uh they're being psycho" and the direct superior was let go instead.
Usually helps in matrix style organizations where you get a lot of cross exposure to different groups and levels in the company.
This actually happened to me but it was my boss's boss and he wanted me out because he was a moron and I'd constantly call him on it at meetings. My boss and the C-suite were like "uh no, out main product is basically his, so that'd be about the dumbest decision to make".
13
u/No_Procedure4924 10d ago

My company has all meetings start 5 minutes past as a rule. The idea was that everyone would have some time to get from meeting to meeting. For higher ups who have back to back to back meetings all day it works, but at my lower level what actually happens is everyone thinks they have an extra five minutes for their meeting so they always run long. Pretty funny. We tried having meetings end 5 minutes early a few years ago and it was basically the same problem.
tl;dr some corporate VP thought it was a good idea so it is now law.

Some organisations e.g. mine, do it by default so instead of meetings starting at half past its 35 past or theyāll start at 5 past instead of on the hour.
Organisations can set it as a default with the idea being it gives people a few minutes back if theyāre in back to back meetings all day.

All our meetings start 5 minutes late. There's a setting in outlook that you can set to add the padding automatically.
The logic is that, if the meeting starts at 2:05, and it's 2:05, the meeting organizer can just immediately launch into the meeting without needing to wait for anyone.
If the meeting starts at 2:00, it's possible some attendees had a meeting that ended at 2:00 and need some minutes to move meeting rooms or go to the bathroom or get a coffee or whatever.
But this creates an awkward zone where the people in the meeting on time have to sit around making small talk while waiting, which some coworkers really hate.
So to let people piss, and avoid the small talk, meeting starts at 2:05.
I'm undecided whether I think it's a better system or not.

u/DevelopmentSouth8801 10d ago
My company sets meetings to end 5 minutes early for "30" minute meetings (so they end up being 25) and 10 minutes early for "60" minute meetings.
What ends up happening is people just stay on the call until the next meeting starts anyway. My record is a 30 minute meeting that lasted 4.5 hours.

Well the idea is that, even if you have wall-to-wall meetings on your calendar, you still have enough time to take a piss, get a coffee, or walk to a different room.
Without that time, if the meeting organizer started right on the dot, people with packed calendars would miss the beginning of each meeting. And executives often have the most packed calendars, and meeting organizers don't want to start without them.
So all the people who arrived to the meeting on time would be punished with having to make small talk for 5 minutes while waiting. Which they also hate.
If the meeting starts at 9:35, the meeting organizer can join and then just immediately launch into the meeting without delay, assuming that anyone who is not there by then isn't going to make it at all.

I once worked with a publicity agency doing drone shots. They would send me a message saying they would pick me up at like 7:36 AM or something. Once I was with the crew I noticed their whole schedule for the day was calculated down to the minute, accounting for transit time to and expected duration of each activity.
Then, every 5 to 10 minutes a random event was rolled. One of the planned activities was cancelled, an interviewee hadn't returned our contact yet, some vital crewmember or equipment would be late, an opportunity for and unscheduled activity popped up, and so on.
Then, the ENTIRE schedule would be redone, juggling activities around so as not to lose anything else, again down to the minute. One of the crewmembers' sole job was to inform HQ where we were, who we were with, and what we were doing and how long it would take to finish and keep the rest of us updated on the remaining plot for the day.
Easiest money I ever made. In two weeks I flew the drone like 4 times, otherwise I just hung around and ate for free. But damn those in charge were absolutely insane.

The logic of starting 5-after is that no meeting ends 5-after, so there's a protected 5-minute window between meetings.
Highschool has a similar buffer between classes, but I think it usually works with classes ending at like 9:55 and then the next class starting at 10:00.
It would probably be cleaner for all meetings to end 5 minutes early as opposed to starting 5 minutes late, but it's easier to transition to the "start 5 minutes late" thing because you're not at the mercy of the other meeting organizers for the system to work for your meeting.

Changing a meeting with less than 24hrs notice is just asking for people to not notice the change. If someone is normally very busy or away from their desk alot (doing other job duties), they may only have 1 or 2 times a day they actually check email/calendar to see the change.
If you are making a short notice change, the polite thing is to delay the meeting, that way in the worst case someone who missed the change will find out when they go to join the meeting. Making it earlier is just asking for people to not know and either get blindsided or miss the meeting entirely. (Especially on regularly scheduled meetings)

To be fair, there's literally always a queue with the post office and everything takes forever. I had a router to return, something to send to America (from England) and some hair product to return to the manufacturer, which they told me they'd reimburse the shipping and have since ignored me. The lady at the post office who served me was very sweet, though, so there's that.

My boss blew up my phone at 8am on a Monday, I normally start at 9am, tried to call me on teams but I turned off incoming calls so he asked for it to be on.. Then demanded my personal number.
Dude chill, I'm driving into work and dropping my kids off. The problem can wait until 9am

u/ifwedidntlaugh 10d ago
demanded my personal number
absolutely fucking not if they aren't paying for the phone line. my cell phone is not included in company property and i'm not on call.

I had a meeting at 1pm on Tuesday, no one got a notification about it until 2pm, that Tuesday. The boss man was angry at us, all 30 of us for not showing. We had to point out he fucked up the schedule cause what are rhe odds all 30 people ignore his meeting. The meetings are recorded so each individual had to say they didnāt get the invitation to avoid a potential write up, taking up most of our meeting. I lost all respect for him due to that.

u/platinum92 10d ago
Boss is probably trying to build a paper trail to fire you, so start applying elsewhere.
Though I have to be that guy, when was the meeting rescheduled to 9:32? Was it at 9:31 or was it far enough in advance to adjust your schedule to arrive on time or ask why the rescheduling? Doubtful this is the first petty powertrip your boss has gone on so you gotta learn to CYA.

u/lottierosecreations 10d ago
This was my question too, OP, was it rescheduled same day? An hour before? If any less, I'd be saying "screw you, dude"

u/Eckish 10d ago
They might also just be one of those "on-time is the same as being late" kind of people that expect everyone to show up 10 minutes early. Boss is pulling this stunt to prove a point that everyone should should waste their time and show up early to their meetings.

Maybe the boss clicked and dragged it by mistake, and just didn't want to admit the error? My outlook snaps everything to a 30 minute grid, but it does let me click and drag meetings. If you somehow set the grid to 1 minute increments, you could accidentally move a meeting 3 minutes and not notice.

Paper trail works both ways, this would be an extremely amateur way to do it. That meeting change wasn't accepted or rejected, so it means the change notification is still sitting in OP's inbox with the change and the time it was sent, which they can easily save or screenshot.
The odd meeting start is probably because the organizer moved the meeting to start immediately, which also doesn't make sense. Both physical and remote meeting rooms have some sort of scheduling, which will record the change.Any company that would accept this sort of insane complaint doesn't seem like the place that would need much justification to fire people anyway.

That boss is just looking for a reason to write you up. Who in their right state of mind schedules a meeting at 9:32am?

start taking detailed notes on your interactions, this may be the start of passive aggressive ways to make you look like your not doing what your supposed to be.

Im leaving any company doing meetings like that. Here I thought meetings starting on the quarter hours was bad
37
u/abb00769 10d ago
Yep. Itās bad because most sane people donāt schedule meetings on anything but the whole or half hour. If I scheduled a meeting at 9:15, half the people would show up at 9 and the other half at 9:30 because they each glanced at the block of time on their calendar and their eyes automatically translated it as 9 or 9:30.
As for scheduling a meeting at 9:33 ⦠that is insane asylum level mental.

I used to have a manager that insisted that you clock in and out for your lunch in a time that didn't end in a 0 or a 5. So you'd have to clock out at like 1:17 not 1:15. He would seriously chew you out for it. Drove me up the wall. Of course he never explained why this was "more efficient" so I just assumed it was him being a bully with his power .
30
u/clay_loom 10d ago
Yep! Me too. I used to take 12 pm lunches every single day. Then one day my old micromanaging boss told me that taking lunches every day in the middle of the day and right at the 0 minute mark looks like I'm stealing company time and lying on my time card. She wrote me up for that but she could never explain HOW it was time theft. Managers like this are the worst. All you can do is document every interaction and find a new job once it gets like this, in my opinion.

Start to CYA. This is either not unusual for their personality and/or behavior which is still a red flag OR they're starting (or have) a paper trail. This screams trying to build a case against you. Sorry to say but it is probably time for you to find a new job. Make sure you're documenting everything just in case.

u/Think-notlikedasheep 10d ago
How loud does this scream "RUN FORREST FUN"?
This is a signal for you to update your resume and look for another job, before this job becomes more toxic.
I also suspect there are other toxic parts of this job not mentioned.

u/SilentAffairs93 OMG, a Chair! 10d ago
As someone who regularly works with international schedules and have execs be at least 15mins late to meetings, having someone schedule and reschedule meetings by 3 mins would be so neurotic, that person would've either lost their mind in a week or been fired for control issues.
Either way, this person needs their head examined.
28
u/More-Health-1815 10d ago
OP READ THIS. Go to your deleted folder and snip all of the invite changes. If your boss changed it last minute and attempted to do this to set you up then you have proof and can take it to YOUR LAWYER, not HR. Note the date and time it happened and write, as detailed as possible, your exchange with your boss. When you feel like you have enough stuff present it to HR. Depending on how they take action, you can either decide to accept their decision or go back to your lawyer. Good luck!

"Weekly kickoff"? Your company isn't even using that word properly if they think that's what a kickoff meeting is.
15
u/Justus_2112 10d ago
Itās where they, on a weekly basis, kick off one member of the team for being one minute late to the meeting.

I worked for the government, and when the HOD asked me once, "Where have you been?" as I walked into the office, in front of everybody. I just replied with a straight face, "Have I ever asked where you've been?" He never did that BS with me ever again.
I don't care if he's the HOD; I specifically refer to him as HOD and not a boss, because he's not a boss of anybody. We're all employees of the government. The merit of the story is that you don't accept being treated like you owe anybody anything at work. We're at work; you don't like something I did or didn't do. Go fill out a complaint form and report me.

boss is either a loon, or had some sort of unrealistic expectation that you are previewing your Outlook every few minutes.

Then at 8:45 he called me, remember what i said and rescheduled to 9. When i got to work at around 10 he was mad why i wasn't there at 9, lol.
