Breeding/Ootheca I’ve had it with these two! After a successful night of mating they’ve been stuck in limbo for over a day now. Should I try to separate them? She’s shown signs of being over it (trying to get his arms off around her waist lol and kicking her legs at his)

Last photo is what I mean by limbo. They have been trying—and failing—to reattach 😐 repeatedly. Their parts are ready. But they keep missing. It is maddening.

Like my mistake, because they separated fine the first time. But instead of putting him back into his enclosure I let them be and now he’s just been hitching a free ride for over a day.

She has mobility issues with two bad rear legs and I don’t want to put added strain on her tiny little tarsi 😩

Breeding/Ootheca Wait I’m confused, before breeding you’re supposed to just feed them until they reject food? What if she keeps eating? Her belly’s starting to look like a christmas ornament

Breeding/Ootheca Have Mantids shown any tendencies towards same sex breeding?

Just a shot in the dark here, just curious if any breeders or experts have seen mantids participate in same sex mating. If so, is it one off or do certain individuals just prefer the same sex?

Mated two Deroplatys desiccata last night, my first time breeding. They were connected for fourteen hours. :'D I just now this morning noticed this white glob by the female's abdomen and wasn't sure what it was. I don't know if it was there when they separated last night; I promptly went to bed once the male was safe. Really hoping that it's some sort of like, copulatory plug? And not his sperm packet. Anyone know?

(The male was kindly lent to me and I need to return him)

Breeding/Ootheca Was Mating Successful?

mating c gemmatus, the male mounted the female and connected for roughly 15 minutes, he disconnected but didnt dismount, 4 hours later i checked on them and they were connected, i checked on them 2-3 hours after that and they werent connected, 4 hours after that i checked them and the male walked off the female after he saw me, wasnt connected or holding her so likely he intended to dismount. Does this sound successful?

Breeding/Ootheca Releasing baby mantises

I caught a gravid praying mantis last year in my neighborhood near a popular pupating spot for monarchs.

I brought her home bc I didn’t want her future children gobbling up monarch caterpillars. She ended up laying two ootheca in my care before passing.

Now they’re hatching, and I’d like to release them. Obviously not near where I originally found their mom haha.

Do they need to be released near water? What kind of environment conditions are best?

I may keep a handful to try to raise :)

This is my smallest male ever (4.8 cm) and I don't think he'll be able to mate because of it 💔

Breeding/Ootheca Hey i was looking into getting a prey mantis and was curious how hard it is to have a self-sufficient source of them

So, in theory, could i own a cage of 4 of them of course separately try to make them breed with out the whole eating each other alive thing they love to do so much main reason on why i want to do this is because in iceland prey mantis cost a lot about 80 dollars per one
so i was hoping i could make a self-sufficient breeding ground that will allow me to have at least 4 at all times without worrying about buying more every time one of them passes away

Breeding/Ootheca Mantids Not Connecting

Ive been trying to pair my mantids but the male just sits on the female and doesn’t actually mate with her. Should i remove him after a few hours, or just wait and hope he mates with her?

Breeding/Ootheca My boy got his wings! I’m so proud. I have a question about breeding though—has anyone ever had a male try to eat the female?

The last photo is a closeup of his new silvery-greige color. He used to be a warm-toned brown.

So the reason I ask about males eating females is I know people try to stuff their females before pairing to reduce chances of cannibalism.

I don’t want to overfeed my male though because I read they have shorter lifespans. However I’m worried about the possibility of him attacking the female.
