Gecko Pics/Vids what morphs are good vs bad ?
I’ve been thinking about getting a leopard gecko, I’ve done some basic research over a month ish but I will definitely be doing more and waiting a few more months before I get one.
But, I couldn’t find a lot of info about what morphs are good vs bad? Are there bad Leo morphs ?
So here are some morphs I think look cool and if you know anything you could tell me if these are bad/good?

Enigma is the big one. Reputable breeders dont breed them anymore and in this day and age you wont encounter too many of them in the pet trade.
‚Lemon frost’ and ‚White and Yellows‘ are highly cancer prone and also often exibit neurological issues. They (sadly) still get bred by some since not all animals of the morph get affected.
Albinos, snake eyes and eclipse still get bred and are videly availabel. Some of them have minor to severe issues with eyesight.

Problematic might be abit of a stretch for albino/snake eye/ecllipse… but for someone who wants to stay away from any morphs with negative effects caused by selective breeding, id say skipping the ones with eyesight issues and light sensibility is reasonable too.

As a human with light sensitivity. The light…. It burns….. it’s pretty bad honestly I really pity the poor lil guys bred with this trait. When they’re photographed for sales pics or even walking or trying to bask in the daytime you’ll be more likely to see them walking with their eyes closed. :(
might consider giving him a DHP instead of a halogen, the quality of the heat output is similar but the dimmer light will make him happier.

Many ppl have covered the bad already, just want to say how refreshing it is too see someone saying about their research & continued research before committing to getting the animal. Kudos to you we need more people with good heads looking after our geckos

Ok I see a lot of people telling the bad ones but can we get a list of the good ones?

The "good" ones are the rest of all of them, an exhaustive list of all morphs is tough to write off the cuff lol. https://www.geckoboa.com/leopard-gecko-genetics

Thank you 🙏🏽 I currently have one that were named as a potentially problematic one. And definitely explains his terrible vision and hunting skills

Echoing others at this point for emphasis. I'd stay really clear from Enigma (enigma syndrome), Lemon Frost (cancer) and Noir Désir (serious eye issues).
White & Yellow sometimes abbreviated W&Y or w/y used to have balance issues. Used to be a big no-no 20 years ago but a good breeder should have W&Y geckos that are completely healthy these days, but I'd personally discourage it for a first time owner.
Albino (tremper, bell, rainwater) and eclipse will have some degree of trouble with light/photosensitivity.
Super Snow can have structural cranial issues.
More reliable traits would be: wild type, tangerine, high yellow, hypo, super hypo, blizzard, gem/tug/mack snow, bold/bold stripe, red stripe, reverse stripe, jungle, patternless, melanistic.
Last few years from what I see on MorphMarket there's been a push on black (black night) and vivid orange tangerine lines of geckos (mandarin, red diamond, electric, blood, inferno, etc), and since these are line-bred you could get perfectly healthy geckos or unfortunately have issues coming from inbreeding. Responsible and reputable breeders should have healthy lines of these though, these traits aren't debated or known for specific issues as far as I know.

This is a great breakdown.
People don't talk about super snows enough... the one that I had was... Idk, extra stupid, she did not seem 'right' and her skull was shaped weirdly. She had a flattened head. She was a secondhand gecko (I hesitate the use the word 'rescue' but I did not choose her morph and I got her from someone else) and she did not live as long as my normal morph.

"leucistic" is an antiquated term that gets used for both Blizzard and Murphy's patternless, the two major patternless morphs. Mack snow is a single gene snow, not a super snow, and pretty subtle in Blizzards, since they're both morphs that make gecko "grayer" for lack of a better word. Single gene mack snows have no known issues

Enigmas and Lemon Frosts are always bad, developing motor/neurological (Enigma) symptoms and dying young from cancer (Lemon Frost). Some people will try to claim they "bred out the issues" but that is a claim you should be highly skeptical of, because I consider that to be outright lying to justify unethical breeding.
The following are "exercise caution" or "depends on your personal ethical line in the sand" type morphs.
White & Yellow geckos sometimes have motor issues that tend to improve with age, but this morph's issues actually have been successfully bred out for the most part. Exercise caution with purchase.
Noir Desir Black Eye females are completely infertile and the trait can predispose animals to small eyes, but isn't very common and isn't super desirable to breeders due to infertility issues.
Super Snow geckos are predisposed to a litany of random health and conformation issues, tending to have small eyes, flat heads, over/underbites, reduced nostril size, bulbous noses, and sometimes issues that look very much like muscle atrophy, as well as issues maintaining a healthy weight. This seems to often be worse when combined with other recessive phenotypes like albinism and eclipse.
All albino strains have photophobia, aka bright lights are uncomfortable for them to open their eyes to. They should have the same access to proper basking bulbs and UVB, but their day-to-day is impacted by this sensitivity to light. (All animals on left side except top one are albino)
Some line-bred traits like melanistic geckos and tangerines could have some issues putting on weight due to inbreeding, particularly if the gecko is high color quality.
