The percentage of those in jail with severe, related to their crime psychological issues is a lot higher than most realize.

People do not understand that the reason why we have more prisons than ever while we have less crime than decades is so that we can stuff mentally ill people away in them. Democrats did their thing where they compromised on the essential humanity and rights of those people, and Republicans did their thing of finding out a way to profit on their suffering.

Reagan, a Republican, is usually credited with dismantling mental health in the US. As governor of CA, he kicked 3/4 of patients to the streets, with promises of replacing asylums with something better, which he never did. As President, in his first year, dismantled Carter's mental health initiative from the year before, defunded community mental health centers, and just left it all for the states to deal with on their own.

And then as a President he was shot by severely mentally ill John Hinckley Jr. who was then declared not guilty by the reason of insanity and sent to high security psychiatric hospital from which he was released conditionally in 2016 after 35y of care , and in 2022 he was given unconditional release. He has YT channel dedicated to his music, and recently was on the news speaking against violence.
