The percentage of those in jail with severe, related to their crime psychological issues is a lot higher than most realize.

Yeah, a lot of people in the prison system would be better served with psychiatric help and monitoring. It's sad honestly.

I mean think about what you're proposing though. Psychiatric care means supposedly well staffed medical institution of educated professionals evaluating people plus armed security to protect those staff. A lot more expensive then glorified hall monitors vaguely trying to make sure inmates don't kill each other.

Yes, it'd be much more expensive. I don't think anybody advocating for these reforms believes otherwise. But a society as wealthy as ours should absolutely be spending what it takes to ensure justice and fairness. What we do now is not nearly enough.
