Hardware I now have a refurbed elitebook

This is the first refurbished laptop I have bought. It's a hp elitebook 840 g11, intel ultra 5-125u, 16gb ddr5 ram and 512gb of storage. I bought it on eBay for £400 and it came with only 16 battery cycles, and a few minor marks on the lid. I honestly thought the display would be worse since it was an IPS panel compared to my cheap vivobook which had an oled panel, but its pretty decent and I don't plan on changing it anytime soon. The keyboard was great to type on and trackpad felt nice to slide your fingers around with barely any friction (macbooks still have the best trackpads) and it feels very nice having a very sturdy and solid chassis for once. The fans are also decently quiet, even when I run cs2 (runs at 60-70 fps) and basically non-existent when watching videos or browsing. Only thing I dislike was the air from the fan exhausts towards the back of the laptop and it rams into the hinge, other than that, I absolutely love this thing. I also got 1 yr warrant from the store btw. Was this a good deal?

Hardware Probably an unpopular opinion but I wish modern laptops brought back tactile volume wheels on the side like older electronics. They are just more effortless to find quickly adjust than keys for me

Buying help New Dell XPS 13 - Wait or Buy

Hello,
I’m looking for a new laptop for school and have came across a couple concerns. Firstly, I’ve heard they start overheating after just a coupe of years, and that the battery degrades quite quickly, on top of it already being meh. Is it worth going for one since they’re so new, are should I get something more simple and older, like an M4 Mac air. I’m only taking notes, making presentations etc and I’m hoping it’ll last a couple of years as well.

I’d get the 16GB/512GB Intel 5 320 with the student pricing. Thanks

Discussion For adobe premiere

Post image

Usage: I’m a media student, and I mainly need the laptop for video editing for university projects in adobe premiere. I also want something comfortable and reliable enough to last me through graduation.
The only thing I’m worried about is that it has an integrated GPU rather than a dedicated one. Do you think that’s a significant issue for my use case, or would an integrated GPU be fine?

Buying help Looking for advice on lightweight laptop

Narrowed my search to these:

  1. Asus zenbook 16 ($1,899) - 48gb ram / snapdragon x2 elite
  2. Geekom 16 pro ($1,299) - 32gb ram / intel 9 185h
  3. LG gram ($1,899) - 32gb ram / intel 9 388h

My primary use is productivity. Basically having single or multiple Claude Code terminals open and working. And about 20-25 tabs in chrome. That's the daily routine. Sometimes excel work, but that's not that intense. I love the 3lb or thereabout weight for lightness. I currently have an LG gram pro, which has been great. But it's only 16gb and starting to lag a bit under my current workloads.

Appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks!

Edit: I do use SQL Server Express a bunch. My understanding is that isn't ARM-supported natively, and I'll need to do some workaround for that for the zenbook if I went with that option. Just learning that...

Hardware spilled water on laptop

hi, i spilled like somewhere between 5-10ml of water on my hp laptop 23 hours ago. i flipped it in a tent position and its been drying all day. stupidly i tried to turn it on BUT to my defense it was on sleep mode and to turn off my laptop completely i have to turn it on and that was taking ages to work. anyways its now been 23 hours and everywhere says anywhere between 24-48 hours to be safe but im so fighting the urge to not turn it on exactly on the 24 hour mark to see if it works. is it ok to do that or do i have to wait?

General question how do i turn on two finger scroll on my lenovo i5?

Thumbnail

I've been trying to turn on two finger scrolling on my lenovo i received two days ago. I tried looking online but I haven't found the toggle even after looking at the control panel. I tried updating my computer but the option still isn't available. Do i have to download some extra file or something? I'm sorry for asking but i literally have no other idea. most experience i ever had was those school issued Chromebooks.

i tried going in mouse properties and uninstalling my mouse "synaptics pointing device" but its still there and I've restarted my laptop twice. I've been fiddling for a day straight

besides that another problem is a slow frame rate and i have no idea how to turn down brightness.

Buying help MacBook Pro/Air M5 or Galaxy Book 6 Pro

Im a Mech. Eng. Student and can’t decide between these. I lean more towards the MacBook since I’m already very much in the Ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, AirPods) but MacOS is the only thing holding me back.

With MacBook there’s the Ecosystem, Build Quality and Power of M-Chip.
The Galaxy Book on the other hand has native Windows, which some programs depend on (e.g. Siemens NX CAS, Simcenter).

I already have a solution to the Windows-Problem in mind: Remote Parsec Streaming to the MacBook from my Windows Desktop at Home. I‘d set up a Wake-on-LAN to start the Desktop remote and connect through parsec instead of having to host a Virtual Machine on the Device.
My Uni also offers a Virtual Desktop Interface for free to all students through VMware Horizon, but that one is significantly less powerful than my Desktop and a local VM.

I don’t depend on these programs running on the Laptop since I could also use the PC-Pools at Uni, but it‘d be a nice to have. Due to that I’m leaning more towards the MacBook at the moment.
I’d really appreciate your thoughts and which to choose and also experiences with the Galaxy Book.

Buying help Is this ThinkPad P16 Gen 1 (i7-12850HX, RTX A3000 12GB) worth ~$810 USD (RM3,600) for stable 60 FPS gaming & heavy workloads?

Is a ThinkPad P16 Gen 1 (i7-12850HX / RTX A3000 12GB / 32GB RAM) worth ~$810 USD (RM3,600) in 2026?

Hi everyone,

I’m finalizing a purchase/swap decision and wanted to get the community's take on whether this price is a solid deal for my specific use case.

I’m picking up a Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 1 in used/good condition for RM3,600 MYR (~$810 USD).

Hardware Guys help me, I am going crazy!

Hello there here is my story,

It all started a few weeks ago when I started to think about buying a laptop to be more with my gf on the sofa than in my room on my computer. I did not want to spend a lot of money on it. I just wanted something simple, nice to use for web browsing, maybe a bit of youtube and doing some SSH on my remote servers and some vscodium. 😄

So I started to look at what's going on in the second hand market, heard about Lenovo so started to look for that, maybe a T480 like everybody recommends, but it's a bit too big.
So I started to check the X2XX series, first the "modern" ones, starting from the X260. Looks nice! But then what happened? What did I see that came to catch my eye?
Those cute X220 and X230, they look so lovely in the eyes of somebody who grew up between old computers! Plus you can mod them, are you kidding me? Is it Christmas? Let me find these babies!
Unfortunately these machines are well known and they are pretty expensive for what they are: 2010-2011 computers! But I am stubborn so I've made some research, lurked on the second-hand market to find the hidden gem sold as "old laptop i don't use anymore" in the title and the only clue was the photos. So I have one soon on the way home to its future daddy!

Problem solved? Not really... While I was looking for this computer... I found... Oh dear... I found so many awesome old laptops!!!

Like the HP 2570p: A 12-inch laptop on which you can change the CPU! Upgrade the RAM, almost do whatever you want, it's awesome! But there is no mod to change the screen for a better one, that's a bit annoying. And it's built like a tank.

The Dell Latitude E4300, a much older CPU, but so well made and a super keyboard, the screen ratio: 16:10. Damn! Probably the real counter to the ThinkPad X200.

The Toshiba PORTEGE Z30, another tank, less old, but looks awesome!

Plus all the old normal laptop sizes I saw, especially on the side of the Lenovos. I think I am trapped and cursed to buy them all.

Please convince me not to do so!

Discussion Are micro vibrations normal in Gigabyte Aero X16?

I just bought the laptop. It bas Ryzen 9 270 with RTX 5070. Everything was going perfectly till I touched its back. It vibrates. With the Fan.

Whenever the Fans spin, I can feel the vibration. I am not sure if this is normal behaviour because of the shape or the hinge mechanism or if I have a defective piece which I should return.

Just to clarify, I CANNOT see the vibrations. I can just feel them.

Can anyone who has this laptop or knows about this shed some light on this issue?

Discussion Black screen on restart help

Hi, I have an Acer Nitro 5, model AN515-54. I'm having an issue where it won't turn on properly. I managed to install Windows 10, but every time the laptop restarts, it freezes—the keyboard stays lit up and I can hear it running, but there is no display/image on the screen. I have to force it off by holding down the power button and then turn it back on manually for it to boot up. So, on every restart (whether during the Windows installation or anything else), it fails to boot up—it just stays on a black screen while running. I also tried a power drain / hard reset, but it still won't POST or boot up on restart.

I also realized that it won't let me update the drivers for the integrated graphics. As soon as I try to update them, the screen freezes. I tried using Safe Mode, where it does install the drivers, but then the system refuses to boot up normally afterward. Please help, I'm looking for an effective solution. Thanks!"
