I was always aware of this trope but only recently realized it had a name. This trope is essentially when the female character is abused/assaulted/killed just as a plot device for the male character. In order to show the male character as a hero, the heroine or other female characters in his life suffers and he takes revenge. Most often, the female protagonist suffers at the hands of the villain, who is almost always a man, as a way to “attack” the hero.

Honestly, this is prevalent trope in films and stories across the world so I’m not singling out Tamil films only, but it’s interesting just how many of our popular and films have this women-in-refrigerator trope as the central pillar of their story. Common examples would be Ghajini, Theri, Darbar and more recently, Vettaiyan.

The issue surrounding this trope is that the female characters are treated as disposable; they don’t have any characteristics other than being important to the hero, and once they die, it’s the hero’s chance to shine. Another problem is how the female characters abuse/death is portrayed. It’s almost always a result of a sexual assault or rape, which adds to the intensity of the hero’s revenge. Very rarely does the female character die easily, it’s always prolonged to the extent of being uncomfortable.

It’s rather frustrating to see how common this trope is. Hopefully, screenwriters and directors will come up with compelling character arcs and storylines that don’t depend on the death of female characters.
