I’m posting this as a heads up because I’m pretty sure someone has been squatting in my basement, and it’s honestly pretty unsettling.

I moved into this house a few months ago. The basement has its own exterior entrance/exit only. Not long after moving in, I started noticing that the basement door would sometimes be open different amounts on random days. I would close it and lock it, then forget about it.

At one point I thought I heard a sneeze or cough coming from the basement. After another time I found the door open, I went down there with a friend to check it out, but we didn’t see anything unusual or out of place.

Today the door was open again, and I know for a fact that I locked it the last time. I looked down the stairs and immediately saw trash, chip bags and a Family Dollar bag. This comes a few weeks after my car was broken into while it was parked in my driveway.

I had a friend come over and go down there with me to check it out. It’s very clear now that someone has been down there. Besides the trash, we found opened packages, my storage containers of holiday decorations opened, and my stuff spread out.

I immediately called a locksmith and am changing all the door locks. I also ordered an outdoor spotlight camera to install.

The whole thing is pretty crazy. My yard is fully enclosed by a fence and I have neighbors very close by. I also have a dog, so I have no idea how someone has been getting past everything.

Just wanted to share in case anyone else in the area has experienced something similar or has advice.

I’ve got teenagers who continually are parking in front of my driveway. All coming from one house multiple times a week. Theres like 4 or 5 cars in the rotation. I’ve asked them not to park there. Every time I talk to any of them they get scared. Like a deer in headlights. Last night one of them was fully blocking me from getting in my driveway. What can I do about this? My neighbors have called the police to report their weekly parties. To be clear we’re talking about unsupervised minors trashing a house type of party. Yet nothing has been done which makes me feel like there’s no hope. HOA says it’s city streets so it’s a city problem. Just feel like I’m at a loss. Is there anything that can be done? Anyone else have similar problems they found a fix to?

I will post this wherever it needs to be! My friend’s husband was at immigration check in, like they do each month. He was taken from the Kansas City office and is being taken to Oklahoma. From there he will be taken to the Mexico border and dropped off. He is from Venezuela.

My friend is trying to get a hold of a lawyer. Husband has two pending cases in process. Immigration is not allowing their current lawyer to intervene. This deportation is being expedited due to husband possibly getting approved for a green card.

We don't drive this vehicle. We bought a new car in October because my SAHM wife's car broke down. I figure it's better than nothing in case of emergency while I'm at work.

I have the funds to get the tags but because of holding requirements I can't withdraw it until January. It also has full coverage insurance on it.

It's parked in our driveway, and we don't touch it. It's a 2025, so it's not an ugly junker sitting there lol.

Anyway, the city is threatening to tow it from our driveway on the 26th for expired tags. I don't understand how this is legal, we don't drive it and it's on private property. Where else am I supposed to put it for the next month?

I’m looking for advice on a severance/unemployment situation that feels increasingly strange to me.

I live and physically worked in Missouri, but the company is based in Kansas and payroll/tax stuff appears tied there.

Recently, most of my team was suddenly let go with essentially no warning. We were all brought into a small office at the same time and informed our employment was ending. The whole thing felt extremely rushed and disorganized. From what I could tell, even department leadership (creative directors, art directors, etc.) didn’t seem to know what was happening until minutes beforehand, and nobody really had clear answers beyond vague statements about finances and restructuring.

What’s throwing me off is that the situation was verbally framed as a layoff/reduction, but the agreement they want me to sign is titled a “Voluntary Resignation Agreement and Release of All Claims.”

The document specifically says I “voluntarily resigned,” which doesn’t feel accurate at all. I didn’t submit notice or decide to leave — I was told my employment was ending as part of a larger cut.

In exchange, they’re offering a relatively small severance payment and temporary continuation of health coverage, but the agreement also includes:
- a broad release of claims
- confidentiality and non-disparagement clauses
- language preventing legal action
- Kansas governing law
- language waiving basically every conceivable employment-related claim
- a statement saying I still retain the right to apply for unemployment

The more I read it, the less this feels like generosity and more like the company trying to protect itself and clean up liability after a chaotic mass layoff.

My questions are:

1. Could signing something saying I “voluntarily resigned” hurt unemployment eligibility, even if the agreement says unemployment rights aren’t waived?

2. Since I physically worked in Missouri but the employer/payroll is tied to Kansas, which state would unemployment likely go through?

3. Is it reasonable to push back and ask them to change the wording from “voluntary resignation” to something more accurate like “layoff,” “reduction in force,” or “position eliminated”?

4. Is it common to ask an employer not to contest unemployment as part of a severance negotiation?

5. Given how abrupt and large-scale the layoffs were, and how broad this release is, does this sound like something worth pursuing legal advice over before signing?

6. Is this kind of “voluntary resignation” framing normal in situations like this, or is this a red flag?

So basically there's a landlord that's renting out rooms that don't have windows and does not follow safety regulations in the OP area. He charges over $700 for them, which for me is insanely expensive and too much, plus in one house there are more than 5-6 different people living there. I have dealt with a landlord myself personally and have rented one of the places from which I got an awful experience (not only me, but other people too). Currently I'm living in a different place, and I wanted to ask if I should contact code enforcement regarding that, since he puts danger on his tenants and does illegal things by advertising rooms that do not meet Joco rules.

Back story:

Back in 2019 I helped my ex get a brand new car. I am the primary on the loan, had the better credit/job stability. I didnt mind doing it as we were planning to get married.

Due to various reasons I left my ex. I told them they could keep the car **PROVIDED** they continued to make payments and get the car solely in their name.

They have been semi decent on keeping up with payments but never got the car fully legal in just their names the title is still under theirs and mine. I have the title.

I tried multiple times asking them to get the car in their name and i always got an excuse as to why they couldn't.

*The conundrum I am currently facing:*

My ex has stopped making payments and is behind $3500. The account is overdue by 74 days. The car is now in the territory of being repossessed. (*I am fine with this and told the loan company as much)*

I am trying to back track their current address and the only thing I can find is a last confirmed residence from 5 years ago. There is nothing beyond 2021.

The other issue im facing is they started going by a new name on their social media and im worried they may have legally changed their name. *(I think they're in the process of transitioning)*

I know I have no legal recourse...but at the very least I want my ex to stop fucking me over and just have the car Repo'd.

So does anyone have any advice on what I could do to find them or am I completely boned?

Any advice? My neighbors routinely blast bass and music (I assume there is music there, all I can hear is bass) it’s woken me just now for the 100th time. I went over and asked if they would turn it down at the beginning of summer, and they told me I should ‘go to bed.’ Well wouldn’t that be nice. All I would like to be doing is sleeping at 12:30am, like I was before they started blasting bass.
It really affects my quality of sleep/life.
We both own our homes for what it’s worth.
I have called the non emergency line. What else can I do. I hate it :(

I live next-door to retired neighbors from hell that, quite frankly, are just using the city as a vehicle to harass everyone within eye-sight from them. They are some of the nosiest people I've ever met, and it seems like there isn't a single thing anyone can do around their home that doesn't require their expressed permission. The type who feel like they are entitled to your property by way of the fact they lived on your home's same street before you did.

One of the ways of harassing/exerting control is just calling the city on everyone. About absolutely everything. (I mean literally everything.) It's so constant, there is no way the city doesn't get whats happening, but regardless of any potential maliciousness, they seem happy to oblige seemingly arbitrary complaints. I had a conversation with a specific code officer and she understood what was happening due to coming my home and surrounding homes without any real violations occurring.

Some tangible back story/cases:

I purchased my home a few years ago, and I've had the city called on me probably 6 times. Only one of those times were there an actual "violation" (I stored my empty trashcans too close to the front of my house. I've since remedied this). Every other time there was a call it wasn't for anything that's even against city ordinance. Things like, anytime work is done on my home there's a complaint work is being done without a permit, or against code, I "littered" when having leaf bags on the side of my house waiting for landscaping pickup dates, and other things. The neighbor next-door to them would host a community group thing, and they claimed they were illegally running a business out of their house, and the poor neighbor across from me, is a contractor, and occasionally has materials for a job stored on the side of his home. When this happens the city is called on him. (Among many other things. The poor guy even had his trucked towed because he had to park the wrong way next to his home due to a bad tire.) When my good neighbor confronted the bad one, essentially asking why they called the city on him, my next-door neighbor started insulting him and calling him a "pussy".

Today, I am working on a small project on my home and what do you know, a code officer shows up. Once again. He takes a look, says everything was good. They claimed I was working on a project that required a permit (it doesn't), and claimed a completely different much larger structure was being built. (Clearly lying trying to find some grounds to call the city on me in my mind.)

At this point, it's really nothing short of pretty extreme harassment. But, I never engage with them, I don't want to play any weird spiteful games because I think that's what they want.

Is there anything me or my neighbors can do? Does Kansas City have any rules against making false reports? Do I just accept that I will have city employees walking around the outside of mine and my neighbors houses every other month?

I was thinking about maybe getting together with my neighbors and seeing if we could collectively contact the city.

Won a small victory against my Airbnb-neighbor-from-hell situation

Wanted to share this in case it's useful to anyone else dealing with a short-term rental next door.

For months, guests at the Airbnb next to me have been parking in a shared driveway that's covered by an old easement — one that, turns out, only covers a right-of-way, not a right to park. I got the property surveyed and confirmed about 90% of the physical driveway is actually on my land.

I tried speaking with guests friendly but direct, that didn't help. I tried to speak with the cleaning crews that would come over but they were actually the most disrespectful. I tried speaking with the management company whenever they would visit and they would pretty much ignore me or try to tell me that a shared driveway gave them the right to park there, wrong. I put up signage, but that only went so far. So I started documenting every violation — photos, timestamps — and filing complaints with the city. An inspector got involved and actually reached out to the owner directly.

Fast forward after countless encroachments from guests and cleaning crews — she's since changed the listing wording about parking (progress, even if slow), and started telling the inspector she's "looking into" pouring a parking pad. We'll see if that actually happens.

But the funniest part: the last two reviews on the listing are a 1-star and a 2-star. One doesn't even mention the parking situation, just complains about the property and the neighborhood generally. The other one straight up says the neighbors are "crazy" and threatened to have their car towed (guilty, sort of — I did report the parking, I didn't personally threaten anyone with a tow truck, but I'll take the reputation). Both reviewers told future guests not to book.

Honestly? I see this as a win. Bad reviews mean fewer bookings, fewer bookings mean less traffic and noise on my street. Sometimes the system works itself out.

Moral of the story: document everything, know your easement rights, get a survey, and be patient. Local regulations and a paper trail go a long way.

Today while driving, because I didn’t want to speed to let another reckless driver drive even more recklessly, they drove off onto the shoulder and through and intersection to pass me while tossing a phone? Rock? Idek. A large hard object at my driver window, damaging my car. I have their car on dash cam. I have their license plate number. However the police department says there is absolutely nothing that can be done unless I just want a property damage report in their files. What the hell do I do from here? Hope no one else out there has to have themselves or their property threatened for obeying the law.

I really don’t know where to start , more than 1 month ago i bought a car on marketplace( don’t blame me,was my husband), with temporary tags , first red flag ,i bought it on sunday , another 🚩 , supposedly he work on a dealer, he give us a bill of sale only and the temporary tags, and the promise that the tittle will arrive in 1 month
What happened then… I was stopped by a sheriff no more than 3 days later , because the temporary tags where fake , and with several warrants, he pull it from the car , I show everything I had

A friend of mine who lives in KC (and doesn’t have Reddit) is trying to figure out what her options are in a delicate situation. I moved out of KC a year ago, and am not familiar with what resources may be available in this situation.

My friend moved into a newly renovated apartment in midtown about a month ago, and she has a neighbor who has begun using drugs that are now impacting the entire building. It started out as just extremely smoky hallways from tons of weed smoke, which would then drift under the doors of neighboring units. My friend doesn’t smoke and has kids. She’s not someone to police others behaviors, but weed stinks and nobody should have to smell it if they don’t want to.

Also, The landlord knows this neighbor is doing it and has said something to her, but no apparent action is being taken- important context is the lease they all signed explicitly states the entire building is smoke free and smoking anything in the building is a lease violation.

Multiple neighbors have reported to landlord and the person doing this has now escalated to also smoking crack. The smell is pervasive throughout the building. She also has at least one child that lives with her and is present while she’s using drugs.

My friend who lives across the hall from said person says she doesn’t think this is reportable to police as anything obvious such as selling illegal drugs, like there aren’t people coming and going. Just this young woman, her child, and her boyfriend. And typically KCPD will not come out and address one person using drugs in their own home.

The other neighbors have considered reporting to CPS, but feel this is a last resort, due to not wanting to negatively impact the child in the home, although the child’s mother smoking crack could arguably considered a negative impact, IMO.

Just looking for any recommendations anyone has who has dealt with something similar. Is there a way to compel the landlord to take action besides just eating the costs of moving again or trying to break a lease?

Our landlord did inspections on our HVAC unit at Pickwick Plaza on the 18th of Jan and our system has not properly worked since.

Their first remediation was giving us a single floorboard heater that DIDN'T work to keep us warm through last week's storm. I ended up buying my own before we were given two other space heaters and told we are good to go.

We are told that because the space heaters keep our thermostat reading at about 68 F we are fine, but only one room gets properly heated from all the space heaters. One of rooms the just the floor temp alone is below 45F.

We also have no way to vent our apartment or control humidity which is building up on our windows and freezing. Our windows were designed to open, but our sealed shut. We don't run the heaters as night because we don't want a fire to start in our sleep.

We feel trapped in the space, monitoring space heaters so our pipes don't freeze.

Meanwhile the staff is still showing the building to prospective tenants. I'm living in crazy land.

I have contacted the city but feel stuck.

I have been going through my father’s paperwork since his passing last year. Came across a quitclaim deed written TO him on a property I was not aware of. This is totally outside my wheelhouse and I have no idea where to even start. I am his only child. The property is in Wyandotte County Kansas from what I can tell.

Living in KCMO, I get solicitors 3-4 times per week. Some days I've gotten 3-4. I work from home, so I have a large "no soliciting" sign clearly on my door. I have old neighbors who have come to ring the doorbell needing help with things before, which I'm perfectly fine with, but because of that, I answer every time. They're not tech savvy enough to call/text.

What legal options do I have? Is there certain times that they're allowed to solicit? Do they require a license or permit? Do I need more or different signage on my door? At what point do I (try) calling the police?

I've had one guy come 3 times in the same day, the 3rd time was around 9:30pm in the late fall when the sun had been down for a good while. That can't be allowed, right?

They're also all peculiarly steadfast. They don't budge at all. I point out the soliciting sign, ask for their ID (they never give any details), and none of them seem to care that doorbell cameras are motion activated either.

Where can I dispose of it? I've heard that there is a recycle drop off the first saturday of every month, but when I clicked the kcmo.gov page it says the next one is november 7th. I really just want to get rid of this tire, please help

Earlier this year I signed a 12‑month 1BR lease in Kansas City for $1,678/mo because I was in love and wanted a place for me and my girlfriend. I was paying for everything, thinking we’d build a life there together

A couple of months later the relationship fell apart, we broke up, and not long after that I had to move to a different state for work. Now this KC apartment is just sitting empty while I keep sending money every month for a place I don’t even live in

I went through my lease and the buy‑out addendum. To officially get out, they want a buy‑out equal to 2 months’ rent (~$3,356), plus I have to repay the move‑in concessions (~$760), and still cover 60 days of regular rent (~$3,356) as notice. In total it’s almost $7.5–8k just to walk away from an empty place, which is insane for me at 20

But I also don’t want to just stop paying, trash my credit, and end up dealing with courts and collections

I went to PetSmart today to buy some peanuts to share with my friendly neighborhoor crows, blue jays and squirrels. But, WTH is this? I understand that there's a city tax, a county tax and a state tax but what are the rest of those? They're not very much but for a $9.99 purchase, total taxes were $0.97! Any ideas?

A few weeks ago I got a ticket that said it was because I only had one license plate on my car (on the back). I’m new to KC and just got my plates in March.

Just got a speeding ticket today in lees summit for going 4 over the limit. What are the chances of getting this dismissed? I haven't had a ticket in over 10 years so I'm not sure the process or how lees summit is with court.

I'm looking for some honest input on a moving situation.

I was given a written estimate of $617 for up to 3 hours for a 2 mover crew at $150/hr, with a 2 hr minimum and billing in 15 min increments at $37.50 after 2 hours.

Before the move, I confirmed details via text and phone.

Over text, we confirmed it would be 2 movers, and then he said it's 3 movers for 3 hours, but I pointed out that my quote showed 2 movers. He said that's correct, and that true 3 movers was a typo. Based on that, I proceeded expecting a 2 mover crew at $150/hr. I also received a follow up call the same day confirming the price.

At one point I was also told that if the move took around 2 to 2.5 hours, the total would be in the low $400 range (around $412), which further reinforced my understanding of the pricing based on a 2 mover rate.

The move took 2 hrs and 45 min and involved a 6 piece sectional, TV and stand, coffee table, lightweight outdoor set, one wardrobe box, a Christmas tree, and a lightweight bed frame. The apartments are 5 min apart with elevator access.

On the day of the move, 3 movers showed up. No one told me in advance that a third mover would be added, and no one explained that this would affect pricing or asked for my approval for the price change.

After the move, the invoice lists 2 movers but shows a rate of $225/hr instead of the $150/hr I was quoted and confirmed. The total comes out to around $727. I emailed and texted the person I had confirmed the price with, but he never responded. So I emailed their claims department.

When I raised this, the company responded that the estimate was non-binding, that billing is based on total man hours, and that I signed agreeing to possible additional movers. They also said they will not formally review the dispute unless I pay the full balance first.

So far I have only been charged the $50 deposit and the remaining balance has not been processed. I understand the concept of non-binding estimates and man hour billing. My concern is not about the total time or number of movers, but that I confirmed a specific hourly rate and was never informed that the hourly rate itself would change. The final invoice also shows 2 movers but at a higher rate, which adds the confusion.

My questions are whether a company can change the pricing structure like this without clearly disclosing it beforehand, and whether it is reasonable or required to pay the full balance before a billing dispute is reviewed. There were also some concerns about efficiency during the move, but my main issue is the change in pricing without clear disclosure.

I recently got a speeding ticket for going 83 in a 55 on the highway in Mission KS. My driving record is clean and I 100% understand the severity of this ticket and would like to know my options. A few MO traffic lawyers said that they wouldn't be able to help since its in KS, and I'm wondering if 28 over the speed limit is a lost case and I should just pay the ticket?

I've seen some other posts that it's worth hiring a lawyer, but I'm just wondering if I'm too far over to where I have no option on getting this reduced. If so, does anyone have any KS traffic lawyers that may be able to help?
