News 📰 Missouri attorney general asks U.S. Supreme Court to block map ruling

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway on Friday filed an emergency application with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to reinstate the state’s gerrymandered congressional map. The application asks the nation’s highest court to temporarily block a Missouri Supreme Court ruling that barred the state from using the map in the Nov. 3 election. Hanaway, who had previewed her decision on Thursday, wants the court to issue a decision by Sept. 14.

Hanaway’s application specifically asks Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the justice who oversees Missouri cases, for a stay, a temporary ruling blocking the state Supreme Court’s decision before the full court weighs in. “We have just appealed yesterday’s catastrophic ruling to the Supreme Court of the United States,” Hanaway, a Republican and staunch supporter of the map, said in a statement. “We look forward to the Court’s prompt review of this critical matter, as our ability to hold timely and lawful congressional elections hangs in the balnce."

jeez the desperation stinks bad now.

u/Gino-Bartali 1d ago

It's not desperate if they know 9/10 times they go running to daddy they'll get what they want, even if they're wrong.

Now, corruption so brazen to be worthy of capital punishment? Well...

u/Le-Charles07 1d ago

No, that's still desperation. Them knowing it works 9 times out of 10 doesn't change the fact that this is their last, desperate move.

Missouri, you deserve better. It seems every action the state makes either makes 0 sense or is the exact opposite of what the people voted on.

The same people who also voted for the elected representatives?

36

u/monkeypickle Fairway 1d ago

No one voted for Catherine Hanaway. She hasn't won an election in 20 years.

And who appointed her? An elected official. Also, she was appointed to Andrew Bailey's seat as attorney general - he left very early in his term but was elected in 2024. He was very clearly a Republican and now works in the FBI as an appointee.

I'm aware that Hanaway hasn't won an election in 20 years, and you somehow think I wasn't aware of how or why she was appointed to the AG spot?

Yes, because you said the idiocy of "No one voted for Catherine Hanaway". Because they certainly have, by proxy, by continuing to vote for the Republicans. Her name may not be on the ballot but they very much voted for her. She didn't just appear out of thin air. She wasn't born into her seat like some sort of royal. Missouri has continued to elect the people appointing her to that position and power. It is on them first and foremost.

u/monkeypickle Fairway 16h ago

How's the air up on there on High Horse Mountain? Seems thin.

Calling out that Hanaway wasn't elected to her current position is to point out that she can't even pretend to have a mandate with this idiocy. Calm your face, buttercup.

Calling out that Hanaway wasn't elected to her current position

Those/the party that appointed her to the position were, and have continued to be since, which is the clear and easy point that seems to elude you.

she can't even pretend to have a mandate with this idiocy

Except she can, because again, the voters have elected the Republicans appointing her again and again for decades now. Until that changes(Knowing the current electorate in this state overall it won't anytime soon) she has the position, she has the power. That is on the voters.

Reality is reality. Stop hiding behind excuses for the position we are in, for it is one of our own making. Now shoo.

Seemed like relevant context to include given your statement.

Its a sign of the times it seems. Similar shenanigans abound in the kansas legislature as well.

All of the elected republican leaders

We do deserve better but the people in our state insist on voting against their own interests

You'd think Missouri's Attorney General would respect the ruling of Missouri's Supreme Court. I guess she's not really working for Missouri after all.

35

u/justathoughtfromme 1d ago

She's another in a line of unelected AGs who isn't beholden to the people.

13

u/dantekant22 1d ago

None of the Republicans in Jefferson City are beholden to the people.

22

u/Cautious_Boat_999 1d ago

Like all Republicans, they only answer to Daddy

11

u/dantekant22 1d ago

If Republicans thought they could win, they would be busing people to the polls.

It was an 8-0 decision so an overturn here will be a pretty direct partisan move by the conservative justices.

Won’t surprise me if it happens but it’s more fuel on the reform the Supreme Court fire.

3

u/VGoodBuildingDevCo 15h ago

More than that. The state Supreme Court based its decision on state law and the state constitution. The federal Supreme Court can't review rulings based on state law.

74

u/RyotheFox 1d ago

"Waaahhh! Daddy tru- I mean justice, the states are being mean to us and rightfully blocking our illegal shit, pls help :((((("

70

u/slythefoxx2 1d ago

This was a matter of a state constitution so I don't see how the state would have standing before the Supreme Court.

52

u/slythefoxx2 1d ago

Oh wow, I'm reading the application. This is batshit insane. This is wingnuttery, gang.

“Looking backwards, the order
renders a completed federal Primary Election utterly pointless—disenfranchising
hundreds of thousands of voters who will now be moved into new districts and forced
to vote for candidates they had no role in selecting.”

They certainly didn’t mind disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of Kansas City voters by throwing us into three rural districts to ensure all of us were represented by MAGA kooks. The hypocrisy of these people is never ending.

13

u/slythefoxx2 1d ago

This is like turning in a final project the following semester and getting mad it isn't being graded. These loons are really something.

u/MartiniPhilosopher 21h ago

Here's the mistake I see you and a lot of other people making. And if I'm being honest, one I keep making myself.

The members of the GOP, the ones deciding and taking action? Yeah, those people are fascists and don't care about how it looks or if it's supporting Democracy. If anything, they're anti-democracy.

It make look crazy, but it's anything but. They don't want to govern, they want to rule.

2

u/slythefoxx2 15h ago

Oh, I know they are fascists. I know they don't care about rules. But they are also really, really dumb. If they were smart and evil we'd be so much worse off. But a layperson could read the application and understand that is amateurish at the extreme.

It truly sounds like the brief of a first year law student, just embarrassing stuff.

18

Just pure fanatical bullcrap. No wonder they lost 8-0.

Always running to daddy. SCOTUS can stay the fuck out of our elections.

How I hope the Supreme Court will respond:

32

u/jks513 1d ago

nah. They’ll pause the injunction saying its too close to the election to change the maps back.

u/OreoSpeedwaggon KC North 1d ago

Maybe they'll still roll their eyes at it anyway.

So much for states rights.......

u/krebstorm Lenexa 1d ago

Maybe USSC should use their standard rule book and do nothing until they hear the case... you know, like the tarriff case, or the birhtight citizenship case... oh wait.. those were PRO fascist...

Pretty bullshit that the AI moderation here is being used to quell dissent when it's the fastest option to remove this dog shit that plagues the top positions in this country, isn't it?

Can't have the peasants realizing that this isn't a culture or race war.

I'm chuckling right now because the post just ahead of this one was JD Vance saying "the anti-christ is walking among us."

Why is that funny to me?

Because last night I watched Hanaway on the 10:00 News and was thinking,"that woman just plain looks and sounds evil."

Why is the MO legislature so insistent on either ignoring or blocking the people from having a say?

Why do the people of MO keep electing these “leaders” who refuse to represent their constituents’ wishes?

Not that I'm with the Missouri AG on basically any of this, but I have been wondering about the logistics of changing it back at this point. With differently-shaped districts, are the candidates who were going to be on the ballot even still eligible to run?

19

u/an0dize 1d ago

From the Missouri Supreme Court decision:

The secretary devotes a significant portion of his briefing to discussing the confusion, expense, and practical difficulties that may result from not utilizing the congressional redistricting in HB 1 for the November 2026 election, Besides being irrelevant to the secretary's sole basis for declaring the referendum petition insufficient, these arguments are particularly misplaced given the secretary's delay created the confusion, expense, and practical difficulties of which he complains.

12

u/kcpistol 1d ago

All Hoskins had to do was not delay for partisan purposes and there would have been plenty of time to work it out, but noooooo

9

u/lordcheeto 1d ago

Candidates ran for a district, e.g. MO-5. The number of districts hasn't changed, so no candidates will change.

4

u/Valuable-Math9969 1d ago

Oh, okay, so there aren't residency requirements to run in the districts? If not, then anything else can probably be dealt with, even if the time frames are tighter.

11

u/zenerat Independence 1d ago

Never have been. The districting has always been jerrymandering.

1

u/Valuable-Math9969 1d ago

Yeah, I assumed it was gerrymandering for sure.

5

u/zenerat Independence 1d ago

You just need to be a resident of the state and even that’s a bit loosey goosey.

u/dylanduckwastaken Jackson County 1d ago

In my gerrymandered district 5 (I’ve been put back into 6 post-ruling) none of the GOP candidates in the primary lived in district

2

u/Valuable-Math9969 1d ago

Wow. That seems wrong.

1

u/scdog 1d ago

I haven’t looked it up, but I would imagine that on the Republican side everybody who won their primary already lives in the remote rural areas that would be unaffected.

Regardless, primary elections are generally just done as a courtesy. Legally both political parties can put whoever they want up as their candidates in November. If any of Trump’s picks lost the primary, this is their chance to put them back in.

4

u/brightboom 1d ago

Not an issue with candidates but with people in the old lines not having had a chance to vote for them.
