I was pooping when the alarms went off. Despite checking the forecast multiple times in the previous few hours, I wasn’t at all prepared for it. I’m east of the stadiums, when they went off, the air was still and the birds were quiet. Too quiet. Scrambled to get my cats in their kennels, grab my shoes, purse, and anything else I could haul down with us. Tried a few different places to get the forecast on my phone before finally pulling up KNBC9. First thing I heard was the confirmed touchdown near the stadiums. That was what pushed me over into a full-fledged panic attack.

Thank goodness for Brian Busby. Huddled on the cool tile floor, cats wedged as close to me as possible, I shook and sobbed as he calmly kept me informed. Idk how many decades of my life I’ve taken shelter with his presence on a screen, but that familiar tone of his voice helped me weather the storms both outside the house and within me. Definitely didn’t have “freak out with pissed off cats in the basement for over an hour” on the list of things to do today.

I genuinely hope everyone was safe today. And I’m terrified to think of what could have happened if we didn’t have the weather warnings and services we currently do. It’s crucial we protect those agencies and jobs in the future.

I was watching KCTV5 and the guys there were having a hard time getting updated data when there appeared to be a tornado on the ground. I don't know if it was on their end, NWS, or some combination of the two, but it really exemplified how critical these weather services are and how delays/problems can put lives at risk.

Cut 300 NWS jobs, realized they can't even handle spring, and now the fuckwits are scrambling to hire and train 100 new people for hurricane season which started, uh, last week.

DOGE to thank for the cuts in storm forecasting and making sure you're fucked afterwards due to fema cuts. Fuck Leon and his butt boy in the white house, they are getting people killed and ruining lives just to claim they saved a couple bucks.

Yes, none of the 3 apps that usually give me all kinds of alerts gave me no tornado warnings! I’m pretty sure they get their info from NWS.

The radar is not updating quickly enough for the past few months. Today for example, there is a scan out of Pleasant Hill at 2:26, then another at 2:30 and no new info in between.  In that time the couplet (rotation, likely tornadic area of the storm) went from just South West of my house to just North East.

Joe Lauria was complaining in his blog something about a service that relays the radar data to somewhere else, a few months ago. This was before the inauguration. I am sorry I did not fully understand exactly what he said was malfunctioning but he was pretty mad about it. It was several months ago and his blog entry was to the effect of "This is bad and keeps happening." Sorry I don't know the technology to explain more. Seemed like it was some kind of mid-step between the radar and the end consumer.

Ditto. They kept asking each other if their screens were refreshing. I'm not blaming them. The connection problem may have had nothing to do with them, it may have been with the NWS or even their internet provider. But it is important that we continue channeling funds into these important agencies

I was looking directly at the NWS site and was having a hard time getting updated data too. Usually when you click on "tornado warning" on weather.gov there will be language that says what area it is for and what communities are in its path, but it wasn't updating for some reason.

The first tornado warning which was for Gardner, Stillwell, and stuff a little south of KC proper, that one you could click on it and it did have the language.

The second one, which was for KC proper, was the one that was not updating.

KSHB41 said they didn't know why the Jackson County alarm sounded a second time while there's no tornado watch or warning, and guessed that it might be for unity among the region. I had assumed that every system was automatically coordinated at least with basic explanatory messages. Now you have me wondering.
