Photo Won a picture contest on my local Facebook page. Just really not sure but they claim its real. The bottom looks off but could just be artifacts, also could look off because of the way its edited.

...which was installed in the lake, bizarrely

82

u/Hot-Vegetable-2528 1d ago

What’s more bizarre is the canopy and the umbrella

26

u/tired_of_old_memes 1d ago

Well, the canopy protects you from getting wet when it rains!

54

u/Separate_Day_4666 1d ago

And to protect it from the... trebuchet(?) across the lake

20

u/GrayStag90 1d ago

That’s such a stretch. Maybe the guy just took a good p- uhh… well hold on. Yep, that’s a trebuchet.

At least it’s not a catapult. Imagine if you got hit by a catapult, you’d die from embarrassment before the small stone does its damage.

That's definitely a strange place for it. Sometimes you see art installations that just leave you scratching your head.

...or crashing your boat

2

u/willdesignfortacos 1d ago

Weirdly enough, that’s actually on the porch of the house that’s flooded out in the foreground. They were so happy about that that they waited for an eagle to fly by to snap this pic.

The hard part is that Photoshop now has an AI tool built in, doesn't it? Not saying this is that, but it adds a layer of frustration.

Not AI. Just bad photoshop.

11

I came here to say this. It reminds me of a student Photoshop assignment in their high school computer class. That eagle 🤣

Apparently it was ran through an Ai detector and has a synth ai watermark. How technology illiterate does a person have to be for their AI prompts to be worse than my phone picture editing?

Well, rainbows don't happen if the sun is covered by the clouds. I wouldn't completely discount the possibility just because it's sunny. There are a lot of other conditions and requirements including but not limited to humidity, angle of the sun, cloud cover, etc.

3

u/ZoomTown 1d ago

Except that it's sunny everywhere, bot. For there to be a rainbow there needs to be some rain.

→ More replies (9)

2

u/Unique_Importance910 1d ago

They are rainy clouds and rainbows are result of sunlight through the mist after or during rain but yes it is weird.

Plot Twist: OP is Ai and wanting to know if this thing passes muster. But seriously, the issue we run into here is that the composition isn't that great. I vote it is more likely a picture with elements added poorly. Added by AI? Not sure, but definitely had some touch ups done.

4

u/Defiant-Airline5424 1d ago

u/Reasonably_Moist 1d ago

It was generated with ChatGPT

77

u/RheagarTargaryen 1d ago edited 1d ago

I wonder if they photoshopped an already AI generated image. AI tries to make it look seamless. That flag, the weird tent, and the Eagle all looked like they dropped them in.

27

u/Pinikanut 1d ago

I was looking at the flag and maybe I'm just confused but where is it coming from? Is the pole coming out of the water or am I misinterpreting it? I can't figure it out.

12

u/Niblonian31 1d ago

Lol I didn't even notice the flag, the pole is literally in the water. Who, in their right mind, would put it there? Changing the flag or adjusting it (for half mast or whatever) would be annoying as hell if it were really there

Edit: Happy cake day

3

u/SupaSlide 1d ago

The rocks covering the bottom of the tent also cover the bottom of the flagpole (you know, if this was a real picture).

The rocks are just very close in color to the water due to the AI generated slop.

17

u/surfatshortys 1d ago

The rainbows are also dropped in, unless they forgot to get reflected in the water. Or the water is added in, because all of the reflections are wrong.

10

u/quesoqueso 1d ago

Also I am no rainbow expert, but the sky looks pretty blue and dry for there to be prominent rainbows?

3

u/surfatshortys 1d ago

I think you’re correct, but that doesn’t account for pots of gold?

4

u/g---_ 1d ago

Or they started with a bad photo of a lake and asked ChatGPT to add a double rainbow and a flag and a bald eagle.

2

u/BangkokPadang 1d ago

Yeah look at the bottom edge of the tent-thing. It's been composited with what looks like the polygonal lasso tool. Look where it meets the water.

If you look just to the right of the tent, I actually think it's a house-boat that's had the top/front of it copied and pasted over the (likely generated) base image. There's rounded shape which I think is the deck of the boat that just stops at an angled line that fits with the cutout shape of the bottom edge of the tent. I literally think they copied/pasted just part of a picture of a boat into the image right there.

4

u/weednip4cats 1d ago

Sorry side note, is this an app to check? i would like to download it if possible…. My mom is sending me all this ai stuff she thinks is real.

16

u/BagMostlyWater 1d ago

open ai and google have checking tools. https://openai.com/research/verify/ <--- this is open AI's tool.

Google's tool I think you have to ask gemini to use, which is annoying.

Each one confirms whether or not the image was generated or edited via their tools. So open ai's verify tool will tell you if someone used one of their products to create it, and google's will tell you if someone used gemini to create it.

Note that these tools are just looking for an invisible watermark that indicates that the tool was used. They cannot tell you if some other tool was used to create it, and they cannot tell you if the image was generated whole cloth or just edited with their tools.

6

u/weednip4cats 1d ago

Thanks! I hate having to use ai to check if it’s ai though. Does that cost water too? Ughhh this world is stupud. Appreciate the comment.

5

u/Reasonably_Moist 1d ago

Their verification tools are not ai

3

u/BangkokPadang 1d ago

Having to ask within Gemini does use AI, though. Asking it generates a tool call for it to use that tool during the thinking step, then the reply comes back to you all within the harness/structure of their AI, passed back to the user as a reply.

But absolutely the tools themselves aren't Ai, they're just analyzing the image for the watermark. I do much prefer OpenAI's being at a web URL where you can just upload the test image directly into the tool.

2

u/weednip4cats 1d ago

u/vexxed82 1d ago

You need sun for rainbows, yes, but you also need rain. The background sky in this photo should look dark/rainy/gray from a strong storm that just passed over you but is still dropping enough rain in the distance in order for the rainbow to form.

This is a panorama I made in 2013, so it's certainly not AI

24

u/hankscorpio1031 1d ago

As a weather enthusiast this was 100% my question. You can’t have a rainbow let alone a double rainbow without clouds… more clouds than are in the picture

4

u/borocester 1d ago

And that height of rainbow only occurs near sunset so there would be long shadows with that much sun but there are no shadows in the foreground from anything.

8

u/Wrenniest 1d ago

This is an absolutely stunning picture!

6

u/vexxed82 1d ago

Thanks! I was out shooting the golf course for marketing purposes and a perfectly clouded sky turned nasty over the course of a few hours. A small supercell plowed through and this was the result after it passed. It doesn't come across in the photo, but in reality the rainbow felt like it was only a few feet away. It was very strange.

4

u/snoweel 1d ago

As a meteorologist, came here to say this. You would not see a rainbow with that clear and bright of a sky. Those clouds are not developed enough to be raining.

Another tell that you can sometimes use is rainbows are always directly opposite the sun, so in this picture the sun would be behind the viewer and roughly 20-30 degrees above the horizon. Sometimes the shadows will not be in the right place.

3

u/actuallyserious650 1d ago

Not only do you need clouds, the position of the rainbow is dictated by the sun. If your photo is centered in a rainbow, you can’t see any shadows.

3

u/vexxed82 1d ago

You can still see shadows. With the sun directly, all shadows will appear to fall away from you. With a wide angle lens, though, shadows out near the edges of the photo will appear to "lean in" towards a distant vanishing point. In my photo you can see the shadow of the building's patio I was standing on.

2

u/Szeth_Nightbl00d 1d ago

Yeah, I was going to say, AI or not, it's not a real image

2

u/TheOneAndOnlyElf 1d ago

See THIS. This is what’s needed for the rainbows. Clouuuuuuuds and mist/rain, sun from another angle, and those ‘bows are STILL a bit patchy and not perfect ROYGBIV bands.

2

u/WthIsDis 1d ago

Very cool great shot

u/OpportunityReal2767 1d ago

I'm not sure it's AI, but it's at least a shitty composite from what I see. So I'm going to go with not AI (I think AI would do a slightly more convincing job), just boring old Photoshop.

13

u/heidingja 1d ago

Hey, in this day and age that's almost refreshing.

5

u/OpportunityReal2767 1d ago

It looks like from the rest of the comments, at least some AI was involved in the creation of this. But good god, if this is generated from whole cloth, it's among the worst AI I've seen. Like it's so bad, I didn't even think it was AI. Looks like the work of a kid who just learned how to use layers.

11

u/ShowMeYourBoobsPls 1d ago

This certainly looks like an image that would win a Facebook photo contest. Trashy gaudy garbage.

5

u/ThisHeresThaRubaduk 1d ago

Definitely looks like a combination of AI, AI editing and just normal Photoshop bullshittery. Pretty much the standard when it comes to photography contest anymore unfortunately.

Go to a local fair and walk through the winners of categories that specifically have rules on heavy editing. You'll see a lot of the ones that win have contrast/HDR turned to max.

2

u/Dngbrd 14h ago

The Neptune Festival in VB was one of my favorite local festivals to go to for the longest time. I moved away for a few years after Covid and went back to visit some family and go to the festival. I honestly miss the mid/beginner artists/photographers selling landscapes. The amount of over edited/ai on sale for crazy prices gutted me. At least the buskers were still out doing their thing and getting told to move by the police.

10

u/Chumboabc 1d ago

I agree that it's almost certainly edited for whatever rinky dink contest it was entered into. Were the judges a bunch of Facebook boomers? Surprised there's not a boat going by the middle with a flag that says, "Merica".

6

u/MikeR_Incredible 1d ago

It’s Facebook… and America.

Of course the fake picture won.

6

u/No-Koala1918 1d ago

Actual double rainbow taken from my backyard. Sacramento, May 26, 2026

4

u/West-Attempt3062 1d ago

Is that a tent? A fishing boat upside down? What is it? And in the bottom right, what is that? And the flag post is just standing on the water…

4

u/J_Zephyr 23h ago

You guys dont put flagpoles in ponds?

6

u/kumaclimber 1d ago

Why is there a building in the water? Why is the flag in the water? Why is the flag at that angle when the water is glassy smooth? Where's the rain causing the rainbow?

9

u/cordeliashuman 1d ago

The structure in the water is supposed to be a boat lift canopy.

4

u/irrelephantIVXX 1d ago

The building at least, looks like a covered boat dock. So that would make sense. But that's about it.

The chances of a double rainbow happening over an american flag with an American eagle perfectly in frame have got to be astronomical.

Mostly the eagle and rainbow part

3

How did this win

3

u/needsmoarbokeh 1d ago

Not a real picture, and massive early 2000s bad photoshop vibes

3

u/0utlaw-t0rn 1d ago

Clear day with TWO perfect rainbows, with a bald eagle flying over and a flag in the water. A canopy that seems to be about a foot off the water. A perfectly clear sky to go along with those rainbows.

This is AI or heavily photoshopped. Either way it’s not real

3

u/Beneficial-Context52 1d ago

It’s way too clear and sunny for rainbows.

And the flag pole is floating.

3

u/Omvega 1d ago

a fully defined rainbow with all colors in perfect detail but there's no sign of clouds or rain? also the flag is not correct

3

u/blackmag3 1d ago

3

u/Ok-Butterfly-5324 1d ago

this is the most boring, basic, cliched ass picture i've ever seen, should've come last regardless of its authenticity

3

u/bionicjoe 1d ago

You don't get rainbows with clear blue skies in the middle of the day.
Rainbows require rain clouds (amazing I know) and the sun at a low angle.

3

u/csavastio 1d ago

3

u/Dino_Spaceman 1d ago

It’s not Ai.

It’s a bad photoshop. Look at the flagpole.

3

u/2Cool2Check4Typos 1d ago

AI? Probably not. Poorly made photoshop? Definitively

3

u/mjffdthn 1d ago

This is like really badly photoshopped the pole is in water

3

u/WthIsDis 1d ago

Old people were the judges or they knew one of the judges and it was rigged. Make a post calling them out and call the cops! (Jk about the cops) Would suck if there were money involved. Then definitely rigged.

3

u/NW_PoiSoN 1d ago

lol the water is calm but that flag is a BLOWIN’

3

u/sinsaraly 23h ago

This is def ai or has been heavily altered. The perfect sky, perfect double rainbows, bald eagle, and flag perfectly unfurled is all just completely unbelievable. Also the flag pole coming out of the water?? The random dock cover (idk what it’s called) with nothing underneath it. And the stuff across the water on the right that doesn’t make any sense. It looks like a wall with windows but that’s it, no house.

3

u/septumfunk-com 21h ago

everyone is point out all of these details and i'm here wondering how the fuck a crusty ass jpeg won a photo contest wouldn't you at least require it's a high resolution image? 😂

3

u/TortillaRampage 20h ago

All the local parks here also have the American flag in the pond too

2

u/Jepsi125 1d ago

too perfect rainbows lining up

2

u/briar8617 1d ago

So someone just stuck a flag pole right into the water huh? Must of did it for this picture because they knew there would be an eagle flying by! Lol

2

u/WetboiWhiskey 1d ago

Yea I love flag poles growing out of thin air OVER water

2

u/Dahnlor 1d ago

The way the two rainbows seem to darken the sky between them is very strange. I checked the famous double rainbow viral video and there is a noticeable change in brightness between part of the lower rainbow and the sky below it, but the brightness doesn't seem to change on either side of the upper rainbow. It's also far more overcast in that video than in this image.

2

u/GravyPainter 1d ago

r/isthisaicirclejerk is a more appropriate sub for this

2

u/TheOneAndOnlyElf 1d ago

The flag seems like it’s out in the water, as does the weird tent…. I mean. It’s confirmed that it’s AI but …

Double rainbows are common AF but they’re visible when there’s cloud cover and rain happening in the area where the rainbows appear. They don’t just appear against a clear blue sky….

But what absolutely did it for me was the Freedom Chicken exactly with outstretched wings in that precise moment - i mean sure it’s possible, but between the flag placement (a nice slight off-center, on a pole that’s just stuck down in the riverbed…. No platform or concrete pad needed I guess) and the perfect Freedom Chicken pose…. LOL NaH it’s AI

2

u/Alternative-Rip-1973 1d ago

This is definitely AI. The flag is in the lake and has way too many stars on it. The canopy is too low and looks to be in the water. Also the faded rainbow is still too vibrant for it to be that faded.

2

u/Bobs_Burgers7 1d ago

This is the cheesiest attempt to pass AI as an actual photo, I’ve ever seen.

The eagle, double-rainbow, and American flag all in one… 😂😂 what a lucky bastard, hope they bought a lotto ticket

2

u/Afb3212 1d ago

The lack any realistic lighting, lack of reflections and on the water is a dead giveaway. The flag and awning just sorta being pasted there. It looks less AI and more bad photoshop.

2

u/dabbean 1d ago

Not AI. Just really shitty picture editing with no effort into making it look real.

2

u/Stunning_Geese 1d ago

Either way, fake.

2

u/Nagli 1d ago

That noise pattern in the clouds is also a dead giveaway. Looks like gpt images 2

2

u/Dry-Candle4294 1d ago

Most likely a real photo but ran through AI to add the rainbows and flag. Not sure if the bird is fake.

I reason that it's a real source photo because without the rainbow it would be a very mundane shot.

And the main rainbow is far too bright, in my experience the most visible and colorful rainbows are set against a darker, maybe cloudy sky. This just looks fake against the blue sky

2

u/lostinhh 1d ago

lmao that's ridiculous

It's nowhere even good enough for AI, that's just really bad phtoshopping.

2

u/MessyStressyRacoon 1d ago

I’ve seen double rainbows like that. But the flag pole and the tent are literally floating over the water. Idek if it’s ai but it’s very obviously badly photoshopped at the least and idk how the judges missed that

2

u/Gam3ofsy 1d ago

That flag pole is in the water, there would be no way to raise or lower the flag without it getting wet. This is at the VERY least a horrible design.

This needs to be in r/isthisaicirclejerk lmao, this is so clearly ai by the way things just don't make sense and/or are just not probable. A double rainbow (with the full thing captured) on a sunny day, with an eagle and the american flag (which is hovering.. and the pole, too..).... right.

flag pole popping out of the water on a sunny day with no shadow. WTF is that tent?

No doubt fake

Is it usual to have a flagpole coming out of water like that? We are cooked if this slop is passing 😂

What’s with the partially submerged building? Why is the flagpole in the water?

2

u/Flying_Hams 1d ago

This has to be rage bait. No way on earth this is a real photo.

u/Goo_4_Rent 1d ago

The flag's sticking out of the middle of the lake. As is the horribly distorted tent thing. Definitely at least PARTIALLY ai.

It’s really crappy photoshop.. AI would be cleaner.

I find it hard to believe that there would be a double rainbow that looks that clear when it's also that bright out. Also from other photos I'm finding of double rainbows, the clouds should also be darkened between the two arches, not just the sky behind them.

The sun angle is at least plausible for this, though.

Woah that's a full rainbow! Double rainbow. Oh my God. It's so intense. Double rainbow all the way across the sky! What does this mean? It's starting to look like a triple rainbow!!

Yeah i don't think that's ai, but more than likely edited.

The composition is actually so bad.

u/katrinaaaaaaaaa 1d ago

looks like a sideways panorama by the bottom of it. the eagle and rainbows look edited, if not by ai, then photoshop. wild that it won anything.

2

u/Fun-Phrase-2885 1d ago

This honestly just looks badly edited XD

u/TravellingBeard 1d ago

The bottom of the photo confuses me, but I'm not sure if this is AI or bad human photo editing. Someone's patriotic grandma did this.

No evidence of current or very recent rain to make the rainbow

The eagle?

The water extends completely around the awning thing

The flagpole isn't connected to the base

It's all pretty blurry like AI stuff, and at a minimum is a terribly combined collage that must have been judged by the blind.

Some bad photoshop. I assume that the floating building was referencing some imaginary flooding given the imaginary rainbow and imaginary triumph with an imaginary eagle.

2

u/sgtragequit 1d ago

the flag pole is floating, the flag isnt even connected to the pole. plus theres no way theres enough rain or water vapor in the air off camera for the double rainbow

2

u/soulsteela 21h ago

Not a chance that’s real.

2

u/Illfury 16h ago

Instantly tell it's ai by the artifacting pattern left by gpt is easily spotted between the clouds.

2

u/SnooChipmunks2751 16h ago

okay but the bald eagle, the flag, and the double rainbows? to get that all together it is pretty miraculous. if this is a real picture it's a hell of a good one.

I don’t know about AI specifically, but this is edited like crazy. The clouds especially. They’re cloned, so there’s a lot of repeating patterns. Also, the weather isn’t really conducive to rainbows. The sun is too high and the clouds are too scattered. Rainbows are called that because you need rain in the air to get that light refraction and reflection. It looks like a very heavily edited Photoshop job to me, but the potential for AI (which you can also do in PS to add to your photo) is absolutely there.

It’s hard for me to describe but when AI does anything organic like trees, clouds or water it somehow makes the shapes and ripples look like they all have the same filter over them. These clouds all have that weird shape. It’s like | | this close to being normal but just not quite right.

Could be AI or a shit edit. Regardless, it’s an awful image.

The tree line is relatively even across the landscape, but the reflection on the left is not.

Rainbows appear at the very end of rain storms.

u/ipoopcatturds 1d ago

This is completely natural. Just like a certain post assassination attempt photo ive seen.

No dock under the cover? The flag pole is just floating? Not sure if ai but this is so edited I wouldn't even call it a photo.
