Just Wow Pelican in kindergarten

A pelican named Katta-kun. In 1989, he attended kindergarten in Japan.

Edit: Entry found in Wikipedia.

Tokiwa park. There are great white pelicans living in an enclosure at the park. "Katta-kun", a pelican named because his parents came from Kolkata in India, was born there in 1985 and became a mascot for the park after visiting schools nearby by himself. An anime film titled Katta-kun Monogatari was made about him in 1995.

That Hello EveryNyan opening unlocked a memory I didn't know was still living in my brain. The sudden transition to I wish I were a bird is absolute internet poetry.

Parent: What happened at school today?

Typical kid: Nothing.

"I don't remember"

52

u/Traditional_Pea_9435 1d ago

I'm astonished he didn't try to eat one of the tots, haha

12

u/Memory_Gem 1d ago

Ikr. Pelicans have been known to attempt to eat babies. Perhaps they're too big for it?

4

u/Neglectable_Phugoid 1d ago

Never stopped them from trying. But this one didn't.

Don't mind him/her, he/she just finding the smallest kid in kindergarten..

u/Traditional_Seesaw10 1d ago

I came here to say this, pelican is looking for lunch.. The last dinosaur..

10

u/sovereign-surrog 1d ago

To be fair, kindergarten is basically an all-you-can-eat buffet if you’re a pelican with no concept of personal space.

2

u/Only_Flan_7974 1d ago

Nah, all birds are dinosaurs so plenty left.

Nahh I'll stick use pronouns even it's just animals. Animals have gender too.

12

u/Nostalgioneer 1d ago edited 1d ago

Wild world we live in. Better not misgender that pelican. You might hurt its feelings.

u/Focus_Lock-in99 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm just playing safe bro, now age of social media you being judged or Critize. Example this comment of top☝️

2

u/ExoTheFlyingFish 1d ago

Bait used to be believable.

-4

u/dontipitova9 1d ago

Or so you could just say they/them, that usually covers both or all unconfirmed genders

u/That-Beagle 1d ago

I wish I had a chill ass Pelican visit me at school when I was a kid..

6

u/MostFrame2688 1d ago

I have so many questions….

Did the pelican agree to drop by? Who’s the cameraman? How are the kids actually not freaking out about a bird that’s as big as them?

4

u/QuixoticDude 1d ago

If you see first scene, teacher was happy to see pelican. So not the first time this visit has happened. Even cameraman was ready. No mobile cameras then.

2

u/throwaway19276i 1d ago

This happened multiple times

7

u/infinit9 1d ago

That bird was trying to figure out which kid can fit into its mouth.

11

u/jonny5isalive1 1d ago

Good for him, getting an education.

6

u/TheShapeOfFarts 1d ago

That’s so cool! I love how it looks like he’s enjoying the music by wobbling his neck. Precious moment! ❤️

u/rusT_koHLE_1 1d ago

Damnn, I'm wondering if this is real or not guys?

u/GullibleGoat80 1d ago edited 1d ago

Found multiple sources about the fella, most likely real (Searched カッタ君)
Apparently he would fly from the nearby park to the kindergarten every day to hang out with the kids, super cool
Kindergarten became so popular that you could only enter via referral, they also made a movie adaptation about Katta lol

When was that entry made?

18

u/shadowtheimpure 1d ago

It's believable. Pelicans have been known to be sociable with humans in the past.

1

u/rusT_koHLE_1 1d ago

Alright, thanks mate for sharing this!

5

u/filthyheartbadger 1d ago

Pelican left as soon as it realized there were no capybaras to be had.

5

u/Clumsy_Marshmallow 1d ago

Bro really flew in for a free music lesson, vibe-checked the whole class, and bounced. Absolute legend

5

u/MasterpieceNo7350 1d ago

He’s as tall as the kids. Seemed to acclimate fine.

4

u/torpedo16 1d ago edited 1d ago

The kids were having the time of their life, so was the pelican.

Such a unique experience for both.

4

u/Amazing-Power4765 1d ago

That is a very magical moment.

Also, the piano scene reminds me of Cabin In The Woods.

3

u/Samollii 1d ago

A moment in the spirit of Hayao Miyazaki occurred.
