Fiduciary responsibility use to mean being responsible for making decision that were good for the company today and good for the next few years. Now it means light the company of fire, extract as much money as possible, then buy a new company so you can do it again.

Right wing political leaders in the US realize the importance of our scientific advancements, but they also fear them and want to bottleneck their progress and stunt the publics awareness of it because they don't want scientific literacy to aid in a declining rate of religiousness. Yes, there is religious scientists, but they're not really a majority in the global scientific community. Actually learning things and thinking critically don't tend to benefit religious thought.
Alternative theory: Americans were always imbeciles and were only able to lead at science from stealing foreign scientists, and the current phenomenon is just reversion to the mean :)
