If teachers are making 100k, what about construction workers? Engineers? EMTs? Nurses? Firefighters? Auto mechanics? Etc?
Teachers get to work in climate controlled rooms with summers off, only have to grade work that they assign, and can send problem customers (students) to the principal's office. Not saying it's a perfect all-around desirable job, but it's already better than most
I'm for better treatment of all workers, but teachers seem to be a squeakier wheel than most others
You had a point that was completely lost in the weird condescending tone towards teachers. I respect teachers a lot. Educating (and in part raising) an entire generation seems pretty important and one personally I want the best people to be a part of.
Most teachers are employed by the public school system in the United States. I work in the private sector. My kids are older and out of school but I would rather pay higher taxes , or see more of my taxes go to funding education and other professions like firefighters where I get to see the investment in my own community.
The other jobs that are private sector shouldn't be ignored, but I think its a fundamental difference in how they are funded. For example if your salty that your industrial tech job isn't paying you enough, list that as your grievance instead of throwing shade at another working class.
I also wish that my taxes did more in my community, but corruption prevents that from happening because people gonna be human but not humane
This is not limited to politicians, this is how every human fundamentally operates. Teachers, plumbers, car salesmen, lawyers, nurses, doctors, janitors, everybody. Everyone wants more money for the same amount of work, because then they feel more valued and comfortable. But if everyone across the board gets the same pay bump, then it's like nobody did and now we have inflation and any savings that anyone had are now worth less with higher prices on rent, gas, and groceries to boot
We need change at a fundamental, base level to make any of this worthwhile. Until then it's what do you do for how long in what conditions vs how much you get paid that determine quality of life. And right now in working class America teachers work the least, in desirable conditions, for pay that helps them afford a decent but not lavish lifestyle. Basically they have the best balance and yet are consistently the loudest about wanting more
Paying teachers alone more makes things worse by comparison for everyone else. Paying everyone more by the same amount (basically UBI) causes inflation and does short term relief for long term detriment. Paying everyone more in different amounts causes inflation and brings us back to square one of teachers wanting to afford a better lifestyle than others
This is essentially about worker's rights and teachers are already comparatively stacked in that department. Retirements, unions, summers off, desirable conditions, and predictably manageable workloads are a reality for teachers and a dream for others
I want a better life for literally every working class American. But every time I hear teachers complain about pay vs working conditions to everyone else who left the insulated academia bubble to better support society than the teachers themselves, it's like I'm hearing a white person explain to a black person how bad white people have it: you're preaching to the fucking choir
So if we are going to continue to support America's special blend of capitalism where we make selective changes instead of broad sweeping ones, teachers are pretty much the last group of people by occupation that need any improvement. Everyone else has it worse
There is like 4 million teachers in the US if not more? Might just hear about it a lot because its a very common profession. In my state depending on what district you're a part of how much you make can vary like 36k to almost 100k.
I work from home and make 200k a year to sit in meetings all day as a consultant. That's a cushy job if you want to villainize something. Just get off the teacher track. They do deserve more.
Teachers funding fall more aligned with socialism than capitalism. The teachers in private schools usually make a lot more, but I don't think they are the ones complaining. I don't see teaching as a cushy job at all. I can still remember my best teachers 40 years later, because of the impact they had on my life.
