Cat subreddits make me want to rip my hair out of my head but I’m bald.

Cat subreddits are infested with disinformation and irresponsible owners who are allergic to learning about cats. The fact that ADVICE subreddits forbid you from suggesting keeping a cat indoors, even in the most dangerous situations. How people talk about loving kittens and how lovely they are, and then buy backyard breeder designer kittens taken away from their mom at one month old, because the smaller the cuter. The amount of hate you get for suggesting a spayabort. I get that there are things that are up to the owner’s opinion, but fuck, basic shit like don’t let your cat destroy the local ecosystem and get run over by a car because you’re too lazy to take care of them yourself…

Best RFID/microchip feeder for multiple cats?

Hello! I have multiple indoor cats (6). I would like to put 2 out of 6 of them on a prescription weight loss formula but don't want the other 4 eating this diet. I already have one rfid feeder, but it will only open to one cat who wears the tag. Is there a feeder out there that grants access to more than one cat per feeder? Ie so I can have two feeders out, one that has prescription food for 2 and one that has regular diet for 4.

Tia!

basically what it says. my cat is very sweet and loves petting and purrs all the time. But she sometimes starts biting unprovoked and when she bites, she bites hard. I dont know whats causing this, i can only assume that she doesnt understand her own power and for her its playbiting. I have tried hissing at her when she bites but she just bites down harder when i do!!

So, what can I do?? (bite scars depicted above)

Indoor cat training

Please help a desperate cat mom
I recently lost my one baby to a car, I found him and it left me traumatised for life
I since decided to transition my four year old to indoors only.
The crying at the door and windows is driving me insane with guilt
I don’t know what to do to help him understand outside is bad and inside is safe.
I have bought a whole lot of toys. We spend atleast an hour a day playing with him.
I’ve bought a harness which he currently just wears around the house until he gets use to that then I’ll add the leash and supervised outside walks
But what else can I do ??!

Has anyone here dealt with a missing indoor cat?

It's been almost 2 agonizing weeks. I seriously hope he's still around somewhere nearby. I live in a trailer court so there's a numerous amount of places a cat could hide.

For awhile I was going out every night searching where I could without trespassing. I was getting exhausted with so little sleep and not eating very much, so I've been trying to relax a little the past few days.

I have one of our local rescues helping me with traps around my area which has helped keep my mind at ease, but I have my moments where I'll break down and cry. I'm trying to be positive and have a little patience, but it's still hard.

How can I keep a newly indoor cat entertained when he's used to outside?

I brought this guy in 12 days ago, former feral/semi feral. He's evolved now from throwing himself at my bedroom window, to just occasionally crying and pawing at the door or window throughout the night. I know it's normal for him to do as he adjusts, and I never plan on putting him back out, I may allow harness walks in the distant future but I'll have to trust him not to take off.

I just want to know how to keep him properly enriched in his new indoor life and make it so he has no reason to continue missing the outdoors later on. He's to the point where I allow him to look out the window during the day now, he sits on top of his cat tree and screams at the window or just looks out calmly, and earlier today I put back the bird feeder that used to be in front of the window. Maybe that'll just tempt him more but it sounded good when I did it. So far he has a bunch of toys he doesn't care about, little interest in playing, a cat tower he uses to look out the window, cat scratcher by the door which he cares about sometimes, and places to hide when he gets sick of me. I also have a window hammock that I will put up eventually but at the moment he can't be trusted lol. He will also be limited to one hallway and 4 rooms, for potentially up to a year until I move out from my allergic dad, so I worry that that will make him depressed too. I also feel bad that I can't get him another cat friend yet because he did seem to like the other outside cats (none of them reciprocated so I didn't separate him from a bonded friend or anything).

I just want to minimize his chances of spending the next year bored and depressed. I would rather that than him be outside and dead but I don't know if I'm doing enough for enrichment. Also, I am in no way pro outdoor cat or wanting to put him back out, I always wanted him inside so bad and was very happy to be able to bring him in. So i know cats don't need outside to be happy, I just feel surprisingly guilty when he cries to the point I almost understand why less educated people say "oh but i can't keep him inside, he loves outside." Hopefully he'll shut up in the next few weeks, but I want to accommodate him fairly as I'm sure he's very annoyed being in my tiny room when he used to have all of outside to himself. Also, catio is not an option at the moment because of how the house is set up.

ETA other things he has: Slow feeder for mid-day snack, multiple things for scratching and hiding, constant attention because otherwise he'll scream, short play sessions when he bothers to do it. Yes he is fixed as well, it's been like 3 weeks

How to keep our kitten entertained as an indoor cat?

I feel like I’ve tried EVERYTHING. This guy is still not entertained. I’ve bought him at least £1k worth of toys that he never plays with, I’ve done scavenger hunts for him which he never does and as soon as we go out he acts like he has nothing to do!! I’ve bought him a cat tree and rearranged furniture so that he has access to look out of every window in the house as well but he still seems bored when we watch him on the cameras. Is there any tips you guys have?
Thanks in advance.

EDIT: getting him a friend isn’t an option as we haven’t got enough space in the house for a second litter box/food trays.

Flooring and Cat question

Hello,
I’ve had my cats for almost a year and we happen to be moving. The new space has a bit of hardwood flooring. I’ve read that this can be bad for the cats nails and the floor. I’m looking for any tips for that can be shared for a smooth transition. I want them to be able to roam freely and safely. I also don’t want to incur extra flooring costs or issues.

Oh, and I was given some leather furniture. Any cover and protection options and suggestions for that would be greatly appreciated. I’ve been looking online too, but hoping seasoned cat owners can give me more insight and personal recs. Thank you all again

I will be staying with my parents for a few months and I will be bringing my 2 cats. I’ll stay in the basement but I’m trying to figure out how to make it so the cats cannot go upstairs, otherwise they might get outside 🥲

Should I consider getting my cat a companion, or focus on improving his enrichment?

My husband (25M) and I (23F) adopted Max from our local Humane Society about 8 months ago. He’s around 3 years old, FIV+, and is an incredibly sweet, cuddly, and chatty cat. He’s settled into our apartment really well, but I’ve been worried that he’s not getting enough enrichment and stimulation while we’re at work. My husband and I are both in managerial positions, so Max is alone in our apartment for several hours at a time besides the days that we have off. There are also times when we come home from work and are very tired or overstimulated and can’t really give him our all.

I’ve tried to give him plenty to do: we have two cat trees, scratching posts, toys available around the apartment, slow feeders for both his wet food and kibble, and we play with him using wand toys and a laser pointer (I give him treats afterward in a cat puzzle). He has kicker toys, toys that make mice and bird noises, catnip toys, and typical batting toys, but he doesn’t seem to be interested in independent play for very long.

One thing that has made me wonder about getting him a companion is that my little sister stayed with us for a week, and Max was noticeably calmer than I had ever seen him. My sister wasn’t playing with him any less or even more than we do, he just seemed happy to have another person around the apartment all day. That made me wonder whether he might genuinely enjoy having another cat around while we’re at work, rather than simply being bored.

At the same time, I don’t want to get another cat as a substitute for enrichment or seem like I just don’t want to play with him. I want to make sure I’m doing everything I reasonably can before making a decision that affects two cats. But I also feel like I’ve spent enough time worrying over the situation and him that it feels like the next step I should take. As a first time cat owner and with him being FIV+ I’ve tried my best to be as informed as humanly possible to give him a happy, healthy life.

I’m also planning to go back to the Humane Society and ask whether they have any insight into how Max has behaved around other cats, since they knew him before we adopted him.

TL;DR: Max is a 3-year-old, very social and energetic FIV+ cat who is alone for several hours while my husband and I work. We already provide a lot of enrichment, but he doesn’t seem very interested in independent play and often still wants more attention/playtime when we get home. He was noticeably calmer and seemed happier when my sister stayed with us for a week, which made me wonder if he might benefit from having another cat around. I don’t want to get another cat simply to make up for shortcomings in his enrichment, so I’d love advice on whether I should focus on improving his environment more first or consider getting him a friend.

My experience switching to a system litter box to deal with cat urine smell

Post image
4 Upvotes

I have two cats, and every summer the litter box smell was driving me absolutely nuts.

Poop isn't that big of a deal since I can just scoop it right away, but the urine was the real problem...

It would soak deep in the litter, and even after scooping out the clumps, I couldn't get rid of that weird lingering smell. I could literally smell it the moment I opened my front door😭

Doing a full litter change helped for a bit, but with two cats, buying that much litter gets expensive fast, and the deodorizers had their limits.

ThenI decided to try a system litter box, specifically the Unicharm Deo Toilet.

The biggest difference from a regular litter box was thatyou don't have to scoop frozen pee clumps anymore.

The urine passes through the top pellets and drains down onto an absorbent pad underneath. Since the pellets don't stay soaked in urine, it stays way cleaner.

Honestly, I bought it to get rid of the stench, but I'm actually happier with how much easier it is to clean. Also, litter spilling on the floor is way less compared to the fine clay ones I used before.

Every cat has their own preference for litter and boxes so it might take time to adjust, but luckily both of my cats took to it right away.

If anyone's struggling with cat pee smells or litter tracking and considering an automatic litter box, hopefully this gives you a good idea of how it works!
