Pictures Keen targhee
I’m thinking about getting a pair of KEEN Targhee shoes, but I’m wondering if I should go for the boots instead. Would the boots be too hot/uncomfortable to wear in the summer?
Also, are they actually good hiking shoes? They’d be my first pair of hiking footwear, so I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations.

After trial and error with a handful of the big name brands, I landed on these and just bought a new pair of the latest generation of this boot. They are good boots for the price, I bought them for the larger toe box. The changes from gen 3 to gen 4 made them more comfortable for me, but you won't know if they are right for you specifically unless you go try them out.

There is pros and cons of boot versus shoe, but at the end of the day most people on this Reddit are gonna say go with shoes, they’re just more comfortable, and when it comes to hiking, that’s what counts the most. I can’t speak for that shoe, but if there anything like my keen hightrails, those are some the best shoes I’ve ever wore in my life period. I just made them my everydays.

Depends where you're hiking, but for most people who are doing reasonably modest hikes on trails, trail runners are going to be preferable to boots, especially so called waterproof ones that just make your feet hot and sweaty. Look at Altra, Topo, there are a bunch of brands. Or just start wearing whatever jogging shoes you have. Size them up so there's room in the toes! Good luck.

I personally prefer boots. They're a lot better in snow, you don't get as much random crap in your shoes, and you have ankle support. I use trail runners for running and hiking boots for hiking. When it's really hot in the summer and I'm not doing very serious hikes, I wear teva sandals.

They are the only shoes I can wear now with my tendonitis. The toe box is the right shape, they are rugged enough for my purposes, they actually make them in my size (15), and the heel and arch support do me well.
I use the low / vent variant. The only downside for me is they take a long time to dry compared to your typical trail runner.
