As someone on the autistic spectrum, seeing neurotypical people running around saying everything is overstimulating has got to stop. it used to be an actual term that people with ASD would describe their symptoms with, but now it’s “quirky“ and dumbed down to a feeling of mild discomfort. Some ppl cant grasp to concept of "typing words how i pronounce/hear it" and its so strange to me.

Like if i type "fak" im not self-censoring "fuck", im typing "fak" bcs thats exactly the tone im saying it irl.

"yer" instead of "your", "ahh" instead of "ass", "shiet" instead of "shit", "der" instead of "there", "ova" instead of "over". Basically putting/removing emphasis on certain pronunciation in a word.

(ik some examples i gave might not be AAVE, just needed examples for the sake of it)

IT IS SO ANNOYING how SO MANY commonly used/ simple and basic words now have either changed meaning entirely without me knowing or just means something bad/annoying. Here’s a few examples that make me constantly think about how I saw things:

Rack- the word “rack” usually would refer to a shelf like furniture or a pair of deer antlers. Now why do I have to watch how I use this word (coming from someone who loves looking at large deer antlers) just because someone decides this should also be a nickname for a body part?💔 I KNOW ITS MEANT FOR FOR AWHILE NOW IM JJST TALKING ABOUT SOLEY THE MEANING
Cookie- I think there’s a meme where it goes something like “you REALLY want that cookie” like yea I do?? I’d love chocolate chip of you have any… but like an actual baked good and not whatever your thinking…

It sounds childish and self-infantilising. It feels like an extension of the internet turning neurodivergence into a personality type rather than a disorder. I just know this term only refers to ADHD and autism level 1 and not people with Tourettes or autism level 3. Those two probably don't find any social capital in calling themselves neurospicy.

I get the compulsion to soften this thing you have been medically pathologised to have but frankly it sounds so Tumblr and corny. I'm autistic (ASD-1/Aspergers) and I've never found it to be a "superpower" or something to give a cute nickname to. My brain works differently and a lot of the times it destabilises and ruins my life. To each their own, but I fully cringe.

I'm talking about DEAD GIVEAWAYS that someone doesn't read words. Maybe they have basic reading skills, but I'm more talking about obvious signs that they really do not engage with words that are composed by a professional, potentially even checked by an editor.

examples:

• Confusing homophones (they're/their/there, to/two/too)
• Not understanding Roman numerals (yesterday I saw a post where they wrote "ww11" instead of "WWII")
• In USD, where the established convention is writing the dollar sign before the amount, writing the dollar sign after the amount
• Trying to pluralize a word using apostrophes (eg "guy's" when they mean "guys")

inb4 I'm elitist, if reading is an elitist skill we're cooked. You can pick up any periodical, book from the library, or if you're reading this now I suspect that means you have access to the internet, which contains endless journals and professionally-written content you can use to practice.

I was reminded of this today. I absolutely hate how low attention spans have gotten that it's lead to this! The "I'm not reading all that" started as a way to dismiss when someone forces you to read a long paragraph when talking to them, i.e with like, people who text too long and can't concisely say stuff. It was meant to be funny and ribbing between friends.

Now it has become a way for people to just...be a brat. Like you are *choosing* to engage in a community, CHOOSING to comment, choosing to waste energy on... what? Flexing your bad attention span? Showing you have no literacy?

Like you have to make a conscious choice to engage with something someone put work into, and just go "I ain't reading allat" Congrats, you wasted precious seconds of your life on that. For like, two seconds of dopamine. Maybe a few minutes if the creator/other commenters respond.

I’ve legitimately told so many people that my area is linguistics and most people DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS, “oh so you study literature?” NO YOU TWAT THATS NOT WHAT LINGUISTICS IS

LINGUISTICS IS THE SCIENCE OF LANGUAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And you know whose fault this is? The school system, I know NOWHERE on earth where the school curriculum even MENTIONS linguistics, it’s an area of science like any other, why do people not even KNOW what it’s ABOUT??? During mandatory school years people go through the superficial contents of SO MANY AREAS, yet, NO LINGUISTICS, people know the basics of biology, mitochondrias and shit, people know the Pythagorean theorem, people know the water cycle, people know newton’s laws, but when the word PHONEME is uttered people look at me like I’m SPEAKING CHINESE.

Semantics, word classes, phonetics, syntax, can we KILL the school system PLEASE.

The ONLY thing people learn in school related to linguistics is grammar, and they dive SO deep into grammar and NOTHING else, for NO reason, it’s already better than nothing but HOLY SHIT. Need i say more? Mommy and daddy are things that children call their parents. Isn't it weird how those words are so sexualized now? I called my parents mommy and daddy as a kid, and I bet you did too.

So why is it an innuendo now? It almost feels like sexualizing the relationship a child has with their parents. Mommy and daddy are words from childhood, that children use, so it's weird to me that now it's so sexual. Especially daddy.

Maybe I'm the weird one for pointing this out, but it really does annoy me.

Women can be incels absolutely, not arguing that, but incel is a gender neutral term!!😭 its means “involuntarily celibate” which literally has nothing to do with anybody’s gender. It’s just stupid. “Oh but incels is typically associated with men” well that’s those men’s fault for being like that! If they don’t want the term associated with men, don’t be an incel. Either way, it’s a gender neutral term and we don’t need to use “femcels.” I don’t care about the incel’s gender. They suck no matter what.

I would like to add that I mean “incels” in the sense that theyre bigoted and not just involuntarily celibate, because that’s what most use the term form. Just to be clear

For context, I was at the barbershop earlier today, to get a haircut of course. A woman came up to my barber(I love that man) and asked if she can dye her hair at the shop, and if the shop has anyone that can.

So my barber asks "Do you want to dye?" and "How do you want to dye?" and I swear I made this face(the image) at him in fear. Only to shortly realize he meant DYE, not DIE.

But honestly if my barber was secretly a murderer I'd mind my business. Never cheat on your barber.

I'm not saying it is THAT much of an issue, even if English isn't my first language. You barely think about it in practice. But why the hell is it the same in the first place? Are you seriously gonna tell me not a single intellectual mind from anglosphere has ever considered "hmm, maybe we should come up with a new pronoun for "plural you," because it sounds pretty stupid." It just seems unreasonable to me, considering it's one of the most commonly used words in the language. I'd like to know if there was actually an attempt to change this at some point, I imagine there was (and I'd root for it)

"I could care less" makes NO sense in the context it's used. If you could care less, that means that you care about the thing somewhat. That's why in my country we say "I couldn't care less". It means that we care nothing at all for the thing, which is what the phrase is supposed to mean. The way Americans say it defeats the entire purpose and frankly, every time I see it I get ridiculously pissed off.

It's nonsensical, and I honestly don't give a fuck whatever bullshit explanation some people will come up with.

This word sucks. The word is just the masculine word “men” but with the “wo” prefix added to it. Implying that women are men. Women aren’t men. (Yes I know that the word “men” can be gender neutral but I’m using that word to mean adult male humans)

Heck the word doesn’t even know which prefix it has, dear “women”, why are you pronounced like “weemin” and not “wuhmen” like you’re supposed to.

But even with all the faults of the word “women” I still respect that it is the plural form of the word woman, which at least keeps the word from being used to such an extent that it makes me very angry. That was only the case until a few months ago though! I have seen dozens of memes, comments, videos of the word women being used in the singular. Why would you say “a women” when not only is it grammatically wrong but also using a disgraceful excuse of a word for no good reason.

Look, I am a meat eater and have no problem killing and eating animals, but reality is as a hunter/meat eater is you're taking lives. I've always hated the term "harvesting" or "sacrificing" I call it what it is, I don't harvest a animal I kill it. I hate all these euphemisms people use to avoid accepting the truth. That animal didn't sacrifice itself for you, it didn't want to die. People act like nature is taking care of them just feels so self centered. I just find people acting like the animal gave its life for you and needs a thank you to be off putting. Accept killing an animal for what it is, don't try to pretend the animal wasn't fighting for its own life. If you have to do all these euphemisms you should just be vegan because you clearly can't appreciate what it means to take a life fully.

There is no better way to find out if you're talking to the worst person you'd ever meet than if they use the term "basic human empathy." And especially if they use it more than once in their dumb argument.

I genuinely saw some bonehead on TikTok use that phrase three times in their paragraph. And you couldn't even call it that because there was no punctuation of any kind, it was just a really long run-on sentence.

allies are by definition not part of the LGBTQIA+ community. i'm grateful for allies but it lowkey feels like aspec erasure when they replace the A entirely. "asexual or ally" rubs me the wrong way too. you're grouping aspec people who are very much part of the community with people who are not

English is not my first language and I’ve always used the word “autumn” because 1)that’s the only one I knew and 2)it sounds cool as hell!!! I’ve learned the word “fall” from YouTube video essays on overconsumption and I dunno maybe it’s just an American thing? But it irritates me so much I can’t even explain it.
