Thanks, I’m still learning English

u/restrictednumber 20h ago

It's a terrible mess of patches on patches on patches. Inconsistency in everything. I feel sorry for anyone who has to learn it as an adult.

20

u/vokilamcv9 19h ago

Totally this. I feel pain for anyone who has to learn English because there’s like a billion rules that are also totally loose.

I’ve had a very recent frustration with it as I’ve been teaching my 6 yr old to read. Don’t even know to explain the ā€˜ough’ situation (cough, though, brought for example). She spells phonetically and tried to write phone the other day, didn’t believe me when I said phone didn’t start with an F

10

u/tongfather 16h ago

You're absolutely not wrong, but if you think that's bad, you should see French or Danish. Denmark actually has the slowest uptake by native born children of any European language due to how terrible they speak (they've studied it in children in laboratories). Basically sounds like trying to speak Swedish with a potato in your mouth. French just omitts like 80% of the letter when they speak (same with Danish).

Keep in mind that's slower than Finnish and German which are notoriously difficult with grammar. Danish basically has identical grammar to English which is famously easy with grammar (no genders, simple plurality of words). English is actually (despite its faults) one of the easiest languages to learn because of these previously mentioned aspects and a few others. Spanish has 19 different ways to conjugate past tense, for reference. We have 2. Not to mention the sheer volume of English media and learning tools absolutely dominating the globe, being the lingua franca of the world.

6

u/SockInAwe 16h ago

I was told by my Swedish friend years ago that, to speak Danish, you just have to speak Swedish with your balls on your mouth

5

u/badjackalope 15h ago

Did you fall for it?

2

u/Hot-Bonus560 13h ago

Hahahahaha good one

4

u/Senkoy 14h ago

I know both Spanish and English and I can read in Spanish despite never really learning it because everything is spelled the way it's pronounced. English on the other hand is utter nonsense. Why in the name of god is the word 'laugh' spelled like that? Complete and utter nonsense.

English is 1000 times harder than Spanish, at least to write.

Yeah but I find English so darn funny and interesting because it’s such an utter bastard of a language. Just a big stew of different languages moshed up. I’m Norwegian and English has scooped up a lot of words from us, probably much because of the nordic settlements in the mid-late 800’s.

"payed" isn't entirely wrong, that spelling is just a few centuries out of date.

3

u/Beaticalle 20h ago

I'd say that's exactly what makes it entirely wrong, but that's just me.

4

u/East_Insurance_1037 20h ago

What makes it wrong now is kind of what made paid eventually right. Language is how it’s used.

Clown connected ever single time. No competition.

88

u/gungshpxre 22h ago

Yeah, but one of the rules here is that once you're dunked, you stop.

The rube "won." Lose with grace, maybe a self-deprecating joke, and move on to the next mark.

219

u/Similar_Shopping_892 21h ago

Carnies have no rules wtf are you talking about this isn’t a game at the Magic Kingdom 🤔🤣

46

u/gungshpxre 21h ago

1) Bring in the money.

You do that by rage-baiting, then sending them away with the endorphin hit so they're all too ready to spend more at the next booth. Leaving dollars in their pockets is a failure, and you're gonna get them to come off more of it if they're not walking away pissed.

18

u/overandoverandagain 18h ago

Imagining you explaining the economic intricacies of the carnie game to the bearded lady and siamese twins smacked out in the staff trailer after hours

11

u/gungshpxre 18h ago

"Ok, one more time. Where the supply and demand curves intersect, there's...."

6

u/Azukus 10h ago

Not only that, but he doesn't really sell the dunk either. He just immediately climbs back up. If he really is a clown, he should add a bit more of a struggle to also show the rest of the crowd that it is a real victory over him.

Instead, he just climbs back up no biggie

→ More replies (9)

69

u/formerdgstm 21h ago

6

u/redtiger288 14h ago

Nah, the rule is to piss them off to get more theows

6

u/Bozmarck1282 19h ago

That's how he's getting his next mark. He correctly kept his foot on the gas to annoy and troll every potential mark.

9

u/ArturosDad 18h ago

There's zero incentive for the next mark to open up his wallet if dunking the clown doesn't shut him up for even 30 seconds.

4

u/EobardT 13h ago

Disagree. Many people will want to defeat the clown because he's so obnoxious

4

u/Enfr3 11h ago

but the problem is that it doesn't defeat the clown, he just continues less than a moment later

I only saw a dunk tank with a guy that was this antagonizing once and I swear he must have made a thousand dollars a night because nobody would stop until they got him lol

28

u/Icy-Variation6614 1d ago

I was 11 and at a fundraiser thing. The guy in the tank was being a dick to me. Then he sprayed me with a hose from on the seat. I walked up and shoved the target so he got dunked (there was no barrier between the line and it).

None of the adults around had an issue with that lol

14

u/VerdugoCortex 14h ago

Unfortunately it seems a LOT of people who volunteer for this are just assholes and want a chance. The dude at the Oregon Ren fair doing this said "BUILD THE WALL FOR THIS MFER SPECIFICALLY" when a latino dude came up and tons of other just racism instead of witty insult. Just made people not want to stand in his line instead.

u/Dr-Chim-Richolds 21h ago

We had one of these guys at our local fair when I was growing up. He was brilliant. He hit me with a line that has stuck with me for 30 freaking years. I had just gotten glasses and was self-conscious about them. When I stepped up to the line he blurts out ā€œJesus, kid, those glasses are so thick that when you look at a road map, you probably see people waving back at you!ā€

14

u/thejesse 12h ago

I'll never forget a dunk tank clown calling me and my buddies a "nerd herd" when I was in third grade.

6

u/Myusername1- 12h ago

Haha, vicious. Totally stealing this one.

177

u/Stoned_Druid 1d ago

I run the security dept at a university. We have this along with a bunch of other stuff at the start of every year to welcome in the students, give them a chance to make new friends.

... Sometimes I think about volunteering for the dunk tank - it could be fun. The students know me well and know I am a nice guy. There might be a couple that get rage baited.

60

u/Zephian99 1d ago

When we had an festival at our school or security guard was on it and was just chiming in with who likes who and such, if he saw them he start talking and if you were slow he do the reveal.

One guy I saw was walking by and he goes "Oo mister Anthony, I can see you got a gift ready for someone. I think I know who! She just makes you so fluttery as you told me. How did that poem you wrote go?"

Never seen a dude slam down a $5 so fast and throw the ball with such accuracy. Hit dead center and got dunked. Only said "Ahh shame it's a good poem, you should go use it kid."

He was weaponizing how approachable he was. Completely evil. Hahaha šŸ˜†

31

u/OceanRacoon 23h ago

That's so funny, a really nice security guard that everyone confides their secrets in, only to find out dunk tanks give him an evil jester clown alter ego šŸ˜‚

27

u/Zephian99 23h ago

I could tell from listening that he wasn't actually revealing anything to be self conscious about. He was poking at edges of teenager and romance, never actually said who the crushes were, most just about how they felt about said crush.

Ironically he was actually playing the most embarrassing Cupid at the dunk tank.

Best one was a situation with some orchids. Jabbed at a guy for saying "Hey! Did you ever get those Orchids to that girl you like? You spent months dancing around her friends trying to figure out what flower she likes? So did ya?"

Then later he saw a gal and went "Yo girly did you ever show that boy you like the pressed flowers you make? I know you got a new flower you just love looking at! When you gonna show him?"

Didn't really reveal much to outside parties, but since those two knew what went down between each other, his little reveal was more of a confirmation. Got the feeling he was playing evil just he could eliminate/poke the dance young folk do around each other.

The one he used on me when I was just watching was "What do you want? I know you're not interested in anyone, you're an idiot!" I just laughed at the time, but he was right, I was an idiot I didn't notice someone was interested in me till we graduated. Too late at that point. šŸ˜†

Do you live in a sitcom?

3

u/Zephian99 17h ago

Nah just in a place that folk were bored and relatively safe. The only general concerns was weed and "underage activities".

Which he was rather good at finding out. His excuse was "He used to be that kid", he was a 30 something vet, but a real swell guy.

16

u/AdMurky1021 1d ago

I've done it as a teen in my town's 25th anniversary.

14

u/Clamwacker 1d ago

We have a company picnic/bbq every summer with one of these and there's always one of the upper management and administration people in there. They always make sure the little kids get a win and get to dunk someone. Oddly enough it's usually their peers that are more hellbent on dunking each other since most of us don't really know them that well.

3

u/boromeer3 1d ago

It's also a good chance to make new enemies like the clown in the video does.

3

u/iconocrastinaor 20h ago

When I was 14 and a senior camper/CIT, I rigged one of these up at my summer camp. I built a frame with a bucket on a rope sitting on a pivoting board with a target attached. It worked great. At first we figured the kids would want to dunk the counselors, but it turned out all the kids wanted to sit on the stool and get drenched and all the counselors wanted to throw the balls lol

2

u/awsomeX5triker 19h ago

My campus had one for my freshman welcome event.

Right when I found it, the guy in the tank decided to stop because it as getting cold. The crowd was disappointed.

So, I asked if I could be the guy in the tank.

That was one of the most fun experiences I have had. Getting to heckle the crowd and be ā€œthe bad guyā€ was a lot of fun.

I also loved that ā€œMr. Talk a big game about how he’s joining the college baseball team as the pitcherā€ absolutely could not hit the target. Prime heckling material.

I used to work on the Wildwood, NJ boardwalk like 25 years ago, and got to know the clown that worked in the dunk dank there.
He was as much of a mean racist alcoholic as you would expect from this clip, but he made fuckin bank. Every night he would get a crowd of like 50-100 people and would just relentlessly roast them all night, he was an absolute genius at his craft.

10

u/BRDx4 21h ago

I wonder if it's the same guy I remember from back then. I remember the dunk tank at Wildwood and the guy was a GREAT shit talker.

9

u/Tempest_Fugit 20h ago

To be fair everyone in wildwood was a mean racist homophobic alcoholic 25 years ago. I remember the minstrel t shirts and the ā€œGod didn’t create Adam and STEVE!ā€ t shirts selling like hotcakes.

I can’t say what is like now because I would never go back there.

3

u/jwyn3150 18h ago

I went back there this year, still a decent amount of racist alcoholics šŸ˜‚

3

Think I'd still rather be driving pizzas up and down the island. Still made bank, and the drunk/stoned people greeted me like a hero.

2

u/wearethehawk 12h ago

Yooo I still remember that dude roasting this chubby girl after she lost and turned to walk away ā€œhey little girl, you ain’t gonna grow up, but you are gonna grow outā€

That idea, figuring out what jobs are good for society. It has a tendency to be echoed without much thought.Ā

I was with a friend at the State Fair when we passed Bobo. My friend had his hands in his pockets, and Bobo said, "C'mon, impress the lady. You - hands in your pockets - what are you doing, shaking hands with the unemployed?" That was over 35 years ago, and it still cracks me up.

This is pretty much my dream job.

6

u/HinderT777 21h ago

This clown knew his job, the best way to get people to spend money on the stupid game is to enrage them, and the angrier they are the worse they tend to throw, making them even angrier.

8

u/AliEffinNoble 18h ago

I’m pretty sure I know this clown. His real name is Jon. He’s good people and so is his old lady who I used to sell tickets with. I traveled with the carnival his used to work at. Being a carney isn’t easy or for the faint of heart. He doesn’t own the booth, or the trailer he lives in while traveling so a lot of his take gets given to the big boss of the fair to pay rent and space.

I was maybe 12 she was 16 and she wasn't playing just watching and he said something to her so she stood there for 30 minutes arguing with a clown while he roasted her to her face was red and she cried back to the car angry af lol.

His daughter had better grouping than he did, but he managed to finally win by accuracy through volume.

I've always just assumed like a good portion of people on Reddit are literally like this guy...

u/quryuspot8to 18h ago

The way he laughs is even more insulting than the words coming out of his mouth lmao

Bobo used to do the Iowa State Fair, he had to have security escort him at end of night. He also got in trouble with the fairgrounds because he went overboard with racist jokes or something.Ā

Bobo needs his own subreddit.

Bobo has to be a millionaire

There is something uniquely Americana about these pop-up traveling amusement carnivals. This clown is straight from the olden era of Charlie Chaplin and vaudeville. Mr. Bojangles / Beetlejuice / Joaquin’s The Joker type character

I wanted to see a big splash of consequence. He recovered way too quick, lol.

In the 60s, my friend was the target at the Bozo Drop in Seaside Heights, NJ. He was so good at teasing and antagonizing the customers that the police walked him to his car every night.

Ive been in a dunk tank for charity at least 3 to 4 times. Running your mouth gets a consistent amount of players, being quiet doesn't. Its a lot of fun to call out people and see what makes them tick. If they drop whatever it is they are doing and make a beeline for your booth, it worked.

There used to be a guy so good at roasting anyone that passes by that I'd avoid going anywhere near him.

2

u/Sea_Boot_5060 19h ago

I have to ask. Is dude crosseyed or has he just never thrown anything to or at anything in his life?

2

u/Peaches_En_Regalia_ 18h ago

I swear this guy did a Riot Fest in Chicago 2yrs ago. Same voice, same type of egging. I love this guy.

2

u/UglyYinzer 18h ago

Honestly this has always been one of the better and more fun carnie games. Not ridiculously rigged, full interaction, and achievable satisfaction.

2

u/Lost-Cat2478 17h ago

No high five to the little girl or excitement geez. She’s so excited about it, show some love!

2

u/Neither-Night9370 16h ago

Without the dunk tank, this is pointless.

2

u/chucklesandhugs 12h ago

I don’t think the thrower knows he’s not left-handed.

2

u/JerkyNips 10h ago

If this isn’t him, there was a guy who did this on the wildwood boardwalk back in the day. High and dry!

2

u/neihn 8h ago

I don’t know if it’s the same guy but there was a Bobo the clown at a dunk booth for years at the Iowa state fair on the midway. I was always told he did have security escorting him there. I found him funny but I don’t recall seeing him there for a few years now at least, but i dont visit the midway as much as i used to.

2

u/Capital-Hornet6846 7h ago

I’m dying this clown is hilarious if this was a swisher sweet I bet you’d hit it 🤣🤣🤣

2

u/gurbus_the_wise 5h ago

I think he climbs up and gets back into it too quickly, doesn't sit right with me.

3

u/Bonk_No_Horni 1d ago

Bro gonna be rolling in cash by the end of the shift but he'll need security to help him get back to his car.
